The original TARDIS consoles appeared functional, and as the Doctor Who character matured we see that each personality seems to have their own control room setup: Personalized. As Doctor Who lives through time & space, and can sense time & space, the BBC artists stopped making the console appear useful for humans; we cannot be sure what the control room really is about, as it became something beyond ordinary senses in Time & Relative Dimensions--beware of the word "relative" writers love it.
