  • I say let's chip in and get him a proper mike. It's the least we could do!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • Your course is fantastic. I tried and failed to learn music theory for years at school but the standard of teaching wasn't particularly impressive and I've learned more in two days from this course than I ever did there. Thanks loads

  • i like the pace your going at. its not super fast or anything. im actually just reviewing cuz its been years since ive played the violin. just keep at this pace

  • Thank you :)

  • These are great!

  • Thank you!

  • Thank you for teaching me music theory!

  • such a dykish dude doing such a noble thing...i feel conflicted

    th-thanks bro...

  • double dot? since single dot means +50% wouldnt double dot be +100%? Wouldnt you just change the sign of the note for that?

  • @RemorfChuket Im not sure as i have not finished these videos yet, but to me it sounds like double dotting would be half of the half. so it would be 50% + half of 50% which is 25% so a double dotted note would be 1 and 75%. And the reason i think this is because yea, if it was two notes value theyd just change the sign, so logically im guessing this is what double dotting is. Guess we will both find out if im right as we watch lol

  • @edgarpoefan that makes more sense lol, thanks

  • I actually thought that this would be the first video that I'd have to rewatch for the triplets, but neaa I got the picture by the end. I've been watching so far and you're doing a great job, I find it very easy to understand things that as a kid were like so bloody hard :)) A huge part of the course isn't really the information that you put out (which is awesome) but rather the fact that you make it so fun and entertaining, you're genuinely having fun and that makes me have fun learning it

  • You're just GREAT !!!!! Thank you so much for your uploads.

  • 20:05 for some awesome glitch hop

  • thanks alot man for your lessons, you make theory easier and more fun too learn

  • Tq for the free music theory~It's great coz music lessons are always expensive which is not affordable by everyone, at least for music enthusiast .Btw You are so funny with the cold jokes :D

  • Thx so much lol

  • i think hes a robot....

but this awesome robot is gonna help me a lot at guitar lol thanks dude

  • I am learning Flamenco music for guitar, and these lessons are VERY helpful. Thank you!

  • There are also double doted notes as well! O.O

  • thumbs up if you keep getting some stupid dental advertisements...

  • You are a very special amazing person. :) I am so happy I found your videos. Thank you for being so awesome and for taking the time and making these videos.

  • The pace you are going is GREAT for beginners, of which I am one. Your entertaining and informative!!! Keep up the good work and thank you!!!!

  • Hey thank you for all Andrew. This is great!!!

  • I can't WAIT to watch all of ur videos!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are soooooooooooo good!!!

  • I actually figured out how to read sheet music on my own, with all the scarce spotty information online, but this is a GREAT refresher to help stabilize my memory recall and speed, and I did learn a few more obscure things as well. :)

  • During the video I thought "Hey music theory could be useful in my dancing!" right after I thought that he said it haha. Good lesson dude thank you!

  • Hey there! Just finished this lesson. I've been trying to brush up on my theory as I've been a pretty neglecting guitarist and piano player and I think the pace you're going is excellent. As you said you have to do these lessons to the masses but I think the balance is really good and every time I start to feel confused you always reassure us that its ok to feel that way and say something funny. Keep up the good work mate!

  • keep it up, love the videos!!!

  • Lalalala, I'll eat breakfast first. Cuz I've been watching ur videos all night. And I think my brain is overloading. So I'll see you.. Next . Day.. I guess...

  • cant afford to go to school so im taking all courses that a would take in school online though google and other means. This is by far best music theory class ever and its free, good work dude

  • @dreamteamstudios88 using Eartraining software? reading harmony? reading composers history? same here... maybe we can share each other those free resources, mail me

  • I am learning a lot and u r very funny! Thank you!!!

  • easy to learn, easy to like

  • @Lypur maybe you could revise this video, because the duple and triple time don't say anything about the beats in the measure but about the subdivisions of the beats; in groups of 2 (duple) or 3 (triple). See my comment below.

  • Jimi Hendrix - Manic Depression, written in 3/4, oh yeah :D

  • hmm since when 3/4 is consider compound I thought that was simple time?

  • @pll89 You're absolutely right. Simple/duple time (like 3/4) is divided into (3 in a 3/4) groups of 2. Whereas in a triple/compound time (like 6/8) there are groups of (2 in a 6/8) 3. 3/4 and 6/8 have the same amount of note value in one bar, but are counted differently because of the duple/triple time feel. In 3/4 you would count the 8th notes as | 1-and 2-and 3-and | 1-and 2-and 3-and | (groups of 2). In 6/8 you would count the 8th notes as | 1-and-a 2-and-a | 1-and-a 2-and-a | (groups of 3).

  • Helium filled notes, lol :)

  • hey andrew...first of all u r an amazing teacher...i don't know how to thank u for the motivation uve given me to learn music...ur tutorials r amazing n unlike the other tutorials where it starts getting kinda boring after some time, u never fail to keep my eyes glued to ur vids...thank u again...ur amazing!

    <3 from india!

  • If I didn't know any better and went straight to 11:35 without watching the rest of the video, I'd think you lost it. Blue-ber-ry, blue-ber-ry, blue-ber-ry... haha. You're a good teacher BTW. Very informative with broken down explanations and imagery. thanks!

  • great videos

  • yuu aree freakin awesome =]

  • nice man

  • How to Tell Simple and Compound Time Signatures Apart.

It is relatively easy to distinguish between simple and compound time signatures. A time signature is compound if the top number is greater than three and can be divided by three. Any time signature where the top number is equal to three or is another number that can't be divided by three is simple. This is a bit of an oversimplification since composers may occasionally group rhythms

  • Your best is great! Thank you!

  • Is there a class where he should how to play the notes on the piano??

  • @HandsomeDee92 he has a video series on piano

  • im gonna watch all 50 :p

  • @williamwolfcub me too!

  • @williamwolfcub I'm gonna try too... Commitment is a hell of a thing though... just look at the views decrease as the lesson number increases

  • He is so cool, and he was right in his techniques of teaching, all good. thanks for considering beginners :D

  • Thank you andrew! thanks for sharing your talent, God bless :)

  • So is the strong note in the times like agogic accents?

  • music is like computer science

  • This has to be your funniest vid yet. A three-legged skipping man. lol Thank you so much for taking out the time to do this for us. I'm learning so much and I REALLY appreciate it!!!

    Thanks, Andrew!!! :)

  • could it be said like, simple is dividing the bar into halves, 4th's 8th's etc...and the compound is the same thing, except it just uses different values to do so: 3rd's?. And it makes sense why compound was invented bc getting to that 1/3 mark of a bar is pretty hard to do (impossible i think) if your only dividing by 2 every time.

  • I have just started on your course and they are fantastic!

  • The quarter and 8th note triplets look the same.

  • for almost ten years I've been playing guitar, with lack of money and learning instrument on my own.. This video of you is a very big help for me and to others.. I really like music theory even in my highschool days.. I dont have teacher and enough money for me to have,, I really love music and playing guitar.. This keeps me alive.. I salute you for being so generous to us SIR!!! keep it up.. YOU ARE MY TEACHER :)

  • I have been playing guitar for around 5 years now and have neglected the theory part of playing up until about a year ago...i dove into the idiot's guide for music theory but i am a visual learner and it didn't hold my attention. Now that i have discovered these videos of yours everything is easier to learn. I actually want to thank you for taking the time out to make these videos and lend a hand to people like me.

  • I passed Theory II in my college, when I got 2 Theory III I couldn't handle it. I Spent two semesters afraid of it and now I'm going back. I didn't really understand rhythm and basic notation. I could make it sound like I understood when I played, but I really didn't and when I stepped away from the piano and my professor stuck a piece of sheet music in my face I was really just a beginner. Technically I passed Theory II and I cannot go back so THANK YOU for giving me another chance!!! <3

  • your so sincere

    thank you so much

my learning is playing is growing faster than ever

  • ur the best xxx

  • You're such a nerd.

    Thank you! :)

  • the triplets thing was hard for me to understand until i realized the sheet music i was practicing for alicia keys's "if i ain't got you" intro uses triplets in the first 4 measures. i was playing triplets the whole time and never noticed it.

  • Thank you soo much for this....ive always wnted to learn music theory n piano but never got the chance...now im spending my summer doing this! :D Being a beginner u really help with the pace and with ur motivation. thnx

  • is the number of beats in compound time equals three in each bar and is it equal two in duple time in each bar?,is the result number of dividing by two in duple time or by three in compound time equals the number bars?

  • i think your doing a great job as is. sure, sometimes you could go alittle faster or slower, but like you said theres all different skill levels of people watching. if someone knows what your gonna talk about (if they read the description) then they can skim through the video or just completely skip it instead of complain. id say keep it up but i assume your done making these videos lol. but thanks for all the help =D

  • 20:15 hahhaha

  • Buddy is cool as f**k ..

  • The words you wrote are a little bit small

it is hard for me to read

  • Good thing your pen isn't a bar soap.

  • im taking theory in summer skool these videos are a big help... thanks

  • How do 2/2 and 4/2 have the same number of beats and notes or whatever? For 2/2, there are two beats a bar where a beat is a half note. For 4/2, there are four beats a bar, but a beat is still a half note. So that means there are two more beats in a bar for 4/2 than 2/2, but a beat is still the same amount, so they can't be the same, can they?

  • @Partyman44 He meant 2/2 and 4/4, which are the same

  • Thank you so much these video are a blessing! And you are an awesome human being BEST TEACHER EVER!

  • you're doing an awesome job! Thanks for the great lessons!

  • Helium filled notes! LOL! I love that!

  • lol my mom came in when he said whats half of 2 and she said it 1 dummy... and i said hey dont call him dumb... he's not dumb he's a smart guy who is nice enough to teach me music theory... then she said whats music theory... and i thought wow and you called him dumb... it was funny :)

  • Great videos! but i still don't understand how 3 triplets can equal 3 quarter notes? thanks :)

  • confused.com

  • I laughed at you messing up the rhythm imitation lol amazing lesson

  • Man I love how you keep dropping the pen lol

  • thank you =)

  • you need to explain how the 3 triplets equals the 2 quarter notes for this concept should be simple but the timing does not make sense to me.

  • @babybunnies You play the 3 triplets in the same amount of time that you would play only 2 quarter notes.

  • you are great .... tks a lot - Cheers from Portugal

  • For the people who say "You're going too slow," or "too fast,"

there's a pause button. Also, you can skip the talking, if you'd like. :D

  • Sir, thanks for this, Its awesome.....Ive learned a lot from tihs great video..

  • Thank you for everything you've done here. You are something beyond any judgement.

  • well put mr. furmanczyk if i take anything from you it will be to never give up... and well maybe music theory too:)

  • well put mr. furmanczyk if i take anything from you it will be to never give up... and well maybe music theory too:)

  • This video was very enhancing for me. I can play this kind of timing with piano, and I always understood their was a theory behind it, but I have never been able to explain it to myself until watching this. Your videos make me feel like a better pianist because they teach me exactly what's going on with the music I'm learning. Thanks, you've done a great job!

  • A classic song demonstrating the "dotted rthymn" feel would be "The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging" from the Peter-Gabriel Genesis' Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.

  • 20:10 MASTER LOL!!!

  • hey bro, god bless you. I just recently found your videos and they are very very helpful. i have leardned so much from it, please keep doing what your doing. P.S thankz for the inspiring speach at the end of your video, i will never give up..i luv music

  • lol i like his comparisons for theory to life >.<

  • @jealouseminds true me too

  • @Lypur i've been teaching myself piano for a little over a year but didn't know the musical theory behind it. thank you so much!

  • You're a great teacher and as someone who is finally getting to learn how to play piano after many many years of wanting to learn how to play so much.......thank you for your time and doing your best.

  • Thank you so much!!!

I'm kind of a lazy idiot who get's sidetracked a lot but with your style I might be really able to keep on going and not just give up, you're a great teacher! :D

  • @Biostrath Thank you! That definitely helps!

  • you're the man Andrew! quick question. I know this was a few lessons ago but i just want to make sure ive been doing it right...when you practice writing a rhythm for 6/8, if you start with a 16th note on the 1, followed by an 1/8 note on the 2 and 3 and a 1/4 on the 4, does that satisfy the bar? sorry if that is confusing...im am getting tripped up with the 1/16 and 1/32 when writing a 6/8 rhythm. Thanks...keep up the awesome work!!!

  • @gunhillending

We all hate maths but if you don't you could try this.

We know that 1 = 2/2 (2 divided by 2 equals 1) and multiplying anything by 1 doesn't change the value.

    So if you calculate (2/2)*(1/8) = 2/16 , similarly (4/4)*(1/4) = 4/16 and of course 6/8 = 12/16 (we're converting everything to 16th's).

    So, 1/16 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/4 is the same as: 1/16+ 2/16 + 2/16 + 4/16 = 9/16... so there is a difference of 3/16 that you'd have to fill in (if I understood you correctly). cheers

  • I love your videos, keep up the good work! :)

  • Andrew, isn't 3/4 time an example of duple time, not compound time? I can't find anywhere else that agrees with you on this.

Also about your videos lasting too long, you could always subdivide your lessons by putting the time for when you change topics in the description. For example here you could put the time for when you cover dotted notes, triplets, duple vs compound time, and homework/vlog.

Love your videos, bro. Live long and prosper!

  • for me the other tutorial is cleaer

    more understanding

    the examples etc.

  • Haha, i pissed myself towards the end - sounded like a trainwreck of a DJ mix :P

  • I'm so glad that I found your channel, your videos are really helpful, amusing and cute. :)

Thank you and keep up the good work!

  • Can't thank you enough!!! really enjoying learning with you. At the end of the day i look forward to getting home to my next lesson :-)

  • BEST TEACHER EVER. Hopefully i can get into college cause of learning this, thanks so much andrew!

  • @7890cv There is no such thing as a bad lesson, only a bad learner. Because if you find lessons that you don't understand, it's your fault. Great job Andrew!

  • @VoldemortandQuirrell lol hate to break it to you. But thats not how the saying goes. Its the reverse

  • @XenverX Well, technically there is such thing as a bad lesson... but you should know what I meant. :)

  • this was a weak lesson..kept side-tracking

  • You seem to amuse yourself a lot, and that's what makes you awesome!

Love your lessons. Everything is taught clearly.

  • A musical genius indeed. Brillliant.

  • thank you Andrew. very much.

  • like times one million!!

  • haha, zim invader's Gir @20:06 :D

  • you are a great teacher and i love your teaching style. i think you are going at a great pace

  • Some click "dislike" just for fun..

  • @pliskin85 Yep SPOT on! Get it cause theres a spot after the half note in your comment....

  • @CaptainPhen They just don't exist its only 4/4 3/4 2/4 and 6/8 and very rarely 12/16 or something but never 5 or 11 beats in a bar. Hope that helped :)

  • The fact that there are less and less views every lesson motivates me to keep going and watching these.

  • Nice videos Andrew! But I got a question, where would 5/8 or 11/8 fit? The 8 can be divided by 2, but the 5 or 11 can't be divided by 3 or 2. What happens there?

    Thanks

  • @CaptainPhen pure maths, instead of the bar to get shorter as in a 3/4 or a 6/8 because you remove beats, in 5/8 you'd have to add 3 more beats so it gets longer ;)

  • Hey Andrew, thank you so much for making these videos. I've enlisted in the Army, but until i leave i have nothing to do so your videos are really helping me to understand music better and sharpen my mind. thanks again

  • Hey Andrew, i hope you dont mind, but i'm making a playlist of your videos so i can watch them from my ipod. I'm heading off to college next year and im hoping your vids will help me with music theory. Keep up the awesome work man!!

  • YOU DID A GREAT JOB ANDREW! :) -Min & JaeMin-

  • @mose0109 Thanks for the comment guys! I'll see you both tonight!

  • @mose0109

you are awesome man..this info is much appreciated \m/

  • thankyouthanyouthankyou so much. You make music fun and you explain it so well. You give people a reason to keep going, to not give up. You really have made my day! thankyouuuuuuu

  • hey ANDREW your the MAN FUR sure and your ZYK and Cool, ahhh arent anagrams fun

  • hi andrew, just wanted to say that i am totally hooked on your videos.I have learned so much so far ,even more than from kids beginner books. Now my question sort of is ....(even though you are doing a brilliant job ) why is it so complicated? Why is it that 2x8th notes make a quarter and 1 beat is a quarter etc.. and then there are the notes and dotted notes etc..! Why cant reading music just consist of whole, half ,quarter notes cause isnt it more or less all the same?I hope it makes sense. tnx

  • thank you very much for all of your videos

  • feel honored to have a Music Theory teacher like you, you are doing a wonderful job, I am very grateful.

  • 20:09 - 20:22

    I think that's Freeform Jazz.

  • Andrew I just wanted to leave a comment on at least one of your videos to thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo very much! I play beginners piano and I've been wanting to learn music theory for the longest! I had no room to fit music theory in my schedule for school so I was overjoyed to see there were free lessons for it! You teach so well and keep doing what you're doing because I know there are a ton of people out there who feel the same way I do. Bless you and much thanks!

  • Your the best, With a dot behind it so plus 50% extra :)!!!

  • Andrew Furmanczyk, thank you, for doing these videos, you don't know how much i appreciate you for doing this, i have tried so hard to get a music theory class at school, but they don't have them any more, thank you for thanking your time when you could have been doing something else. By the way, i think you have a great sense of humor, i am the same way. lol

  • a dotted half note + a quarter note = 4/4? i think that's correct.

thanks a lot of the videos. really appreciate them. it's great to learn about what you love.

  • LOVE UR HAIR!!!!!!

  • I just wanted to say thank you SO MUCH for taking your time to make these videos. They've helped me so much, as I can't afford formal lessons and I've always wanted to learn theory. Thank you!!! You're a great teacher! ^_^

  • this ones confusing T.T ill try again

  • Ladies and gentlemen... The only music theory teacher who will skip around to explain the differences in rythm! 5 stars

  • thx for giving me some advantage for my upcomming IRL lessons :)

  • Would Chuck Norris be able to teach Musical Theory Better then you? Nawww :) Thank you! I love your videos and they help me a lot!

  • @AnUnexplainable hahahah!!! that's such a great comment! :)

  • @Lypur ahaha xD It's an honor to me that you replied to my comment :D Thank you again :)

  • You are really good!!

  • Thank you for being Here and Now!

  • Hey My andrew :) nope you're doing just fine, i'm a beginer and you're going a good speed, everyone else should just be grateful that you're doing this for free, it isn't their right it's a total privilege

And you're soo right like in the back of my head im like "Ok this is kind of confusing" but then I just tell myself that I can do it and I end up getting it :) agter rewinding a couple times lol.

You should come teach in New Zealand :)

    You're awesome as!

  • so compound time is less manly then duple time???

  • Thank you Andrew for sharing you knowledge and thanks for being good at what you do. You are doing a great job and conveying the info in a funny and whimsical way. It's very entertaining and fun too. Thanks Drew

  • THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THIS!!!

  • Is a whole note always equal to 4 beats, or does it change depending on the time signature? Like in 6/8 time, is a whole note equal to 8 beats? Or do the values of the notes stay the same no matter the time signature?

  • @MinkaChink No I think a whole note i always four beats, I think.. it should be because a dotted whole note is worth 6 beats, so a dotted whole note should fill up a bar in 6/8 .. correct me if I'm wrong tho

  • @MissNeona actually, when its in 6/8 time, the whole note is worth 8 beats. He explains dotted notes in 4/4, the value changes depending on the time sig. You basically double the 4/4 note value of everything in 6/8 or any other time sig with 8 on the bottom. Therefore, a dotted whole note would be worth 12 beats in 6/8.

  • @MinkaChink No I think in 6/8 time a whole note is equal to 8 beats as you say because in Andrews previous lesson (lesson 4 at 11:00), it shows 6/8 time and a half note has 4 beats whereas in 4/4 time its only 2 beats so...., ye I think a whole note in 6/8 time is 8 beats.

  • These videos are great. You have a natural ability for teaching and getting inside the head of the student from a teachers perspective. I feel like the tempo of your teaching is perfect for me. I'm 26 and love playing guitar and have (in my opinion) a natural ear for music but I have no really understanding of what I'm building so i wanted to learn theory. This seems like a great way to do so and I really appreciate the time and effort you've put in to these. Thank you so much!
