I didn't realize the sacred smudging ceremony started with the removal of plastic wrap from the new-age store-bought sage bundles beside a fake eagle feather. Hmm.
I have spirits in my house. They have been there for a long time. They play with my animals and family by startling them with sounds of people walking, tapping, or shadows, but they do it at inappropriate times. I've asked them to stop. They will for a bit, but it seems to be a reoccurring thing. I do not want them to leave. They have just as much right to be here as I do. I just want them to calm down and have some sort of peace. My question is will smudging calm them or make them leave?
@Joeyal123 Then you must REALLY dislike this video, eh? I mean, let's count the clichés: store-bought sage - check. Fake eagle feather - check. Mish-mash of various tribal "art" deco - check. Obligatory "Dances With Wolves" music - check.
Thank you for for posting this so I can share with my friends what has helped me for so many years. The negative posts are not worthy....They just don't get it..
The music is overriding the narrator's voice, obscuring essential information. .. lowering or even removing it might be good. How about an R. Carlos Nakai sample instead ?
very nice however the girl blew on the smudge to put out the flame, this is not a good thing according to elders, ones breath should never touch the smudge stick or feathers.
This puts your energy into the smudge(smoke), be it negative or positive and the smoke touches everything, our prayers and words are carried in the smoke. But the elder that advised me was local, I grew up on the Kahnawake border, with lots of connections to free advice concerning Native beliefs, and its just common knowledge. But you may practice anyway you like, this will not change the fact that you are doing the right thing by smudging. Onnen, Peace and friendship to you always.
First Nations people actually -would- and -do- find using an abalone shell like this disrespectful.... but mostly because they find US SMUDGING disrespectful. There's a great deal of their traditions that we've really stolen without the understanding of what they really are (and without being raised in their cultures, there's no way to understand it fully. Face it - its the truth.)
That's what I have heard though not directly from a First Nations person, that you should not burn herbs in a shell. From my own tradition, one would be mixing fire and water which also would be disrespectful.
Yeah i agree with you Mattdeos to an extent. Tho I find it unusual when people get offended by people of different traditions, joining into other traditions. There should be nothing wrong with learning and joining different ways of life. We all came from the same place at one point or another.
Yeah, but traditions are distinct for a reason. To try teaching "native american smudging" but then to present it in a way that makes Native peoples scream is nothing more than disrespectful. Can you picture how a catholic would feel if hindu's started offering cups of Christ's blood in a ritual or prayer? They'd freak out entirely, because of disrespect and knowing that there's no footing of understanding. This is nothing more.
hehe the catholic/Hindu example made me giggle a little. Could you imagine haha!!
Yeah i totally see what your saying, however, should Hindu's start doing that there would have to be some spiritual belief for them to do so. I don't think anyone is going to start smudging if they don't understand the purpose for it.
I thought that a shell could be used should it be found on land (given up by the ocean)
First Nations are not the only people who have used smudging or the burning of incense to purify a person or space, etc... Plus the herbs are from the earth and free for all to use when needed. All people are children of the earth and all people have the same need for protection from bad spirits. The only disrespect that should be found is when people attempt these rituals without understanding how to do it properly nor the significance of it. That disrespects the spirits. Just my 2 Cents.
You are clueless, I grew up on the Kahnawake border, (Im White) and Native friends always wanted me to join and practice the native traditions. The more people on their side makes for better understanding and tolerance. I gave up my Christian beliefs to practice and join this great nation of people, and they are very welcoming. These traditions were not stolen, (you cant steal tradition) they were passed on, by elders who wanted the world to understand them and respect them. Buy a book.
@majorlifts The average christian church is spiritualy dead. If only they knew how big the universe is. If only they relise how many creations are floating arround the universe and othere planets
I found the video and the narration (with the weird music) just didn't go together. I expected to just here the woman explain what she was doing but this guys voice was heard instead. Anyway...just my 2 cents.
I found this video very soothing to watch and it is nice to find some serious info on this topic. But I disagree with two things. First, an abalone shell should never be used to burn anything in, as it is an insult to Mother Earth's beautiful creation. Second, I always thought of the element of water as coinciding with the west and fire with the south. What does everyone else think?
In my tradition, water does correspond to the west and fire with the south, however, in Native American traditions there are different correspondences. There may even be variations from tribe to tribe. I am not familiar with their traditional correspondences because I have no Native American ancestors..
I love the art~

Fist of all, I can see you have no respect of the smudge. never take of picture of it or video of it........because you take the spirit of it.
TheOmer1971 1 year ago
@TheOmer1971 There is no spirit of smudging, the spirit is inside the body. Judgment has no place here.

well your though about the abalone shell is miscontrued.
I feel that you think defaming a beautiful shell is disrespectful, the abalone shell is a symbolic object used in the rituals for smudging.
The native americans would be the last ones to disrespect the earth...
koolaidolio 3 years ago
Yes, I agree about the Native Americans. That's why I was surprised by it. What is the abalone shell symbolic of?
sarinola 3 years ago
It symbolizes water, and balances how the elements are supposed to be ordered :earth, water, fire, air(the smoke), and space
koolaidolio 3 years ago
For you, which direction does each element correspond with?
sarinola 3 years ago
