Seafoam is bad idea, unless u want a connecting rod shooting throurgh the side of ur engine block. That stuff can hydrolock your engine. Plus redlining ur engine is terrible for it, u can bend a push rod, break a valve, or bend a connecting rod. All bad ideas dont try it. Seen this at my shop many times. Big no no.
I am a seafoam fan. They recommend slow "sipping" of the fluid to avoid hydrolock. This is the only warning they give on the seafoam website. I let a car I didnt care about chug it pretty good and it was fine but I wouldn't if you are paranoid about your car.

At :45 wouldn't that cause hydrolock if that is sucked up to fast ? I think it needs to be slowly dribbled in. But then again I am not too mechanically savvy
@proudyke No, because it's being sucked through the PCV port, which responds to vacuum. So in the event that TOO much seafoam is sucked up, the PCV valve will close, thinking the vehicle is WOP, and kill the engine. It's actually very safe, and the exact reason why you use the PCV valve for this job. It's also combustible, unlike water, so hydro-locking would be very difficult.
@DIYautotech Thank you for your explanation. I did the Sea Foam today, in thirds like you did and my Nissan Pick Up seems to be doing a lot better. Thanks again.
10 years, my family's owned an S-series. 10 years, no one ever bothered to look at pictures of the engine online. 10 years after buying it, we find out it was, indeed, not an SL2, but an SL1. The SOHC engine is terrible, it makes the DOHC S-series engine look like a good engine.
Looks about time for that motor mount to be replaced too. lols. And with these saturns, the best plugs to use are NGK copper. You didn't mention gapping spark plugs for those of us who use the recommended plugs. Other than that, great tutorial on that seafoaming.
Thanks for the video! Would you recommend doing the oil change the same day, or could it wait a few days? Also, should the oil change be done after seafoming, or does it matter?
haha is that a chromeintakes intake kit? if so i orded the same one for my bimmer a few days ago..cant wait till it comes in...any comments on the intake?
I enjoyed the video! think now i can do a proper oil change without depending on my brother to do all my fixes for me!! Also would the seafoam also clean up the fuel injector? Thanks for the Video Post!
@The18Jake you mean your car doesn't have a RPM gauge? Then just press down on the gas pedal a little bit faster than you normally would down the street for a bit.
@The18Jake It's ok, the only reason you would take it close to redline is so you run the seafoam through your engine more thoroughly. It really isn't that big of a deal, just make sure you accelerate to at least 60 miles per hour few times. best place would be one of those slower highways, where speed limit is 45 mph or 55mph because the car will run a a little rough and it can be scary trying to merge into a 65mph highway. Do this late at night, there will be tons of white smoke,
Thanks for the upload covers everything quite well. Great job, but I have to say and not trying to undercut your video but a couple times you sounded like Bill Murray in Caddyshack. "Keep your eye on the ball" lol.......But seriously I didn't know to change my oil and plugs when done or to separate the can into 3 separate containers like that very helpful!
I've been a mechanic for 12 years, and the one thing I learn everyday is that no one knows everything. Congrats on being ase certified but boasting just makes you look like an idiot, why stoop to their level?
Since air tends to go to the top of a fluid, there's not a lot of point in leaving the petcock open while filling. But, like everything else here, there's no actual bad / dangerous advice given - just some relatively minor misused terms. Overall this is a pretty well done video, and it's nice to see people sharing their experience.
I'd suggest fixing "PVC" in steps 3 & 5 of the video description, though. It'll help your credibility when you say you know better. ;).

Sorry but you make yourself sound incompetent every time you say pvc. Soon as you said that I stopped watching. Why watch an instructional video when the person cannot correctly name the parts they are working with. You are only regurgitating what you've seen done in other youtube videos. If I were you I'd delete this video, remake it, and get some credibility back.
@DJDevon3 I love how everyone gets on me for saying PVC instead of PCV. I know it's positive crankcase ventilation, it was just a goof up infront of the video camera. Secondly, you're talking to an ASE CERTIFIED technician with 4 certifications. And if you don't like my videos, don't watch.
My ASE cert experience + my 4 certifications for automotive technologies via a 4 year college will DESTROY all knowledge you have about cars. So take your little 15 year old shit talk somewhere else.
@DJDevon3 Look out for my new video where I drop the cradle, remove an engine, rebuild it, slam a new clutch, timing kit, brakes, fuel filter, O2s (front and rear), ball joints, lower control arms, tie rod ends, and align it...all in under 5 days. Oh but I'm probably not a good technician huh? because I said pvc instead of pcv. Point proven.
And I guarantee you're still watching my "how to seafoam" video, because it's the best on youtube. Silly "DIY" mechanics with no education, you kill me.
Credibility? I think my 43 videos, 100,000 views in 4 months, and 2,000 channel views PLUS over 150 subscribers is a ton of credibility. One of my clips on rotational inertia is being used in a demo video for NASA com. center of Long Beach. So keep the shit talk down.

Good straightforward video. Makes something that could be daunting, easy to do/understand. Who cares if he said pvc instead of pcv when you're getting the parts for your car you'll figure it out.
It's a pcv not a pvc valve, and the rubber in the spark plug socket is to hold the plug so it doesn't fall out. Other than that thanks for the informative video.
Thank you for posting this video! Probably the easiest video to understand because you used a nice camera! Good Job!!! Do you have any problems with the E3 plugs? Many people say they get misfires/it throws a code, not on this specific car but many different makes and models.
@DIYautotech lmao "technicians" don't have a instrument cluster full of warning lights on. how do you fill a new oil filter on a 90s chevy 4x4 before installation when it's mounted horizontally? that spark plug "wrench" is a socket. it has rubber in it so the plug stays in the socket no matter what position it's in. lol a certified technician with walmart tools. lmao a technician knows that the valve is called a PCV, not PVC. it's not a plumbing fitting. you're such a lying sack of shit.
@omarG19100 No, the service light is due to a high voltage circuit that was created with the use of an aftermarket radiator fan relay switch that was installed without a resistor.
I've been using Sea Foam on a '64 VW for years ... with no probs yet ... the engine is clean and the carbs are clean ... with these engines there are a few caveats ...
1. Change the oil after 30 miles ... it's air cooled ... air and oil are your only friends, sea foam helps, but only in short order, it's not meant to be an oil subsitute.
2. Change out your fuel filter ...whilst inspecting your hoses ... to prevent a Bus-B-Que ...

i just changed my plugs and wires...do you think i still need to change them after the seafoam...i also just did the oil...is it necessary to change the oil also
@toyota4life94 Changing oil when it gets dirty is a very bad habit. The color of the oil honestly has almost NOTHING to do with how much life-span it still has. You must remember that the oil reason we change oil is because the ADDITIVES have been depleted, and some oils change color because of this...HOWEVER, there are also some oils that don't change color as the additives have been depleted, so you'll never truly be able to tell if you need an oil change by color. Stick to the 3,000k Rule!
I have a 1994 Saturn SL with a new 1998 motor(same 1.9L SOHC engine)
also i just changed my spark plugs about 6k miiles ago... should i just do the seafoam and then clean the spark plugs? I have done plugs, wires, new air filter, and radiator flush. I was thinking about switching to synthetic because I could get a really good deal on it.
what about changing pcv valve, o2 sensor, etc? if it's not broke don't fix it? or should I replace the cheap things because of age
@rgrafton I always suggest replacing spark plugs after performing a Seafoam Tune-up, no matter how new the plugs are, that's just me. You can "survive" without changing them, but make sure to clean them off REALLY well.
About changing PCV, O2 sensor, I'd highly suggest replacing both parts AFTER the tune-up. Both are fairly inexpensive and both go bad after around 30-50k miles. Saturn single-wire oxygen sensors are HORRIBLE and should be replaced about every 30K Miles.
@rgrafton It is best to put it through the PCV Valve because you're dispensing the seafoam into atomized air that is running through the intake, therefore it will be cleaning the intake ports, runners, valves, and combustion chamber. This method is more effective than going through the brake booster house. Brake booster is the last resort.
@DIYautotech ok thanks! now that it's getting warmer out I'm going to be doing some simple maintenance things. Seafoam, Replace PCV valve even though it still makes a noise (it's probably never been replaced)
Switching to synthetic this weekend after I do seafoam. I may also check my throttle body and clean it which is under my air box on left side (1994 Saturn SL SOHC)
I also just got a new exhaust which has a big effect on my acceleration and increase in HP.
@rgrafton I change these because they get clogged up very easily, especially with non-synthetic oils. They're only about $3.00 so replacing them every few oil changes helps keep the car running as it should.
@toyota4life94 Also. Next time just watch my video & do it the way that I have showed you. This is why I make youtube videos. Also make sure to SUBSCRIBE!
@toyota4life94 Well for starters, it most likely did not smoke because you did not put 1/3 of the seafoam through either the brake booster line or the PVC system. If you did not do this then seafoam will not be entering the combustion chamber & will not be cleaning carbon (so it won't smoke because it's not actually doing anything) Also, make sure to change your oil right after. Seafoam lowers the viscosity of oil and really thins it out. Hope this helps out.
@jrmy1080 Glad to see you viewers are noticing the fine details! I have another video (if you haven't already watched it) of me replacing both the top motor mount and trans axle mount. Check it out if you haven't already!
