So in Unangam Tunuu (the Aleut language), whale is "alax". Fat is "ignatul." So would everyone like to help me, in defining the other words for the Aleut cuisine? Qagaasakung (Thank you.)
I am glad something this exists, The Aleut has been so Russianized, so their unique culture and language should not disappear. I got an Aleut dictionary, printed in 1940 by the Department of the Interior. In it there is 10 different words to describe preparing fat for consumption. I know in pre-European times, the leader of a whaling expedition, his wife would fast for 3 days, and have a dream about where the harpooned whale would surface. So I know they had 10 ways of preparing the fat.
