Unfortunately, most of the 'newer' wannabe death metal bands suck, so we can only hope old-school can put out good shit in the future (didn't happen in MA's case). I've seen MA live since 1989 and will see them for a 5th time, regardless of this failure.

Regarding Cold Lake, if the artist who created the album refuses to stand behind it, how can any fan be expected to? The same is true of the Black Sabbath album Forbidden, which every participant has disowned as "total crap," "wish I could forget it," etc. Fans have expectations, which usually go unmet once a band becomes too experimental or moves away from what fans liked in the first place. Danzig 5 BlackAcidDevil (BAD) is another good (bad) example.

Hell, grindcore is almost pretty much entirely made up of strummed chords.

@kethel2008 trey's solos sound like trey's solos right away, sandoval's drumming sounds like sandoval's drumming... morbid angel, alright. On the other hand, "Elements" was a step forward in progressive music, a total masterpiece, a step forward.I don't consider this one to be a hell of an album, BUT is a step forward in my opinion.

@johnyboy1977 ummm pete sandoval isn't on the this record, he had back surgery and couldn't play. tim yeung is on drums which is why the drums don't sound quiet as good. but the drums are only a small portion of what is wrong with this record.

I am so glad this album is pissing you "purists" off. Especially because if you take away the production value and the emphasis on the drums, this album is actually a lot more like classic Morbid Angel then you apparently have the capacity to understand. Before you even question me, i have been listening to MA since the release of Altars Of Madness and own every subsequent album.

No band is above criticism. And this song is nothing like Altars at all. This album isn't a foray into expermentation; if you really want the real thing, listen to Impetuous Ritual, Disembowelment, or late 90s Gorguts. Those bands, whether you like them or not, really took chances.

This is Morbid Angel absorbing the watered-down elements of populist pap. There's nothing challenging or genre-forwarding about it all. And that's years too late even with those attributes.
