I don't really like Studio Ghibli films except The Cat Returns, but by far this was my favorite film of theirs, if not actually one of my favorite anime movies for all time. To any people who have not seen this yet, go ahead! You will not regret it, even if it's not your most favorite.
By the way, I think the American voice actors (actresses) did a good job in this movie. Usually when I listen to English voices in anime, they sound stupid, and shrill (and give me a headache) but not here.
Cont'd: The music, by the way, is fantastic; I was in tears every time a song started up. For those who haven't heard any of it (the song in this trailer is not in the movie) look up Arrietty's Song. A shocking surprise - the vocalist who did the English lyrics is the same girl who did the Japanese song, so there was hardly any difference in the feel of both!
Other thing I loved about this was seeing how much detail Miyazaki put into minuscule things - I saw my world in miniature going home.
I did see the movie last night, and I was blown away by it. Yes, I am a huge fan of the Ghibli films, I own all of them on DVD, even the Fox and MGM versions that were not made by Disney... BUT.
The Disney dub was excellent, and the reason they have famous voice actors is because famous voice actors practically fight each other for the chance to act in these. Christian Bale, who did Howl's voice in Howl's Moving Castle, adores Miyazaki's films. I had no complaint about Disney doing this one.
Finally! A Borrowers movie that does the book justice. XD (Actuallly, I love the live action film when not in comparison to the book). I think I'm more excited that Hayao Miyazaki has another mobie coming out! I'm glad he finally got to do his movie from the perspective of the small. If I remember correctly, he wanted to tell the epic tale of a caterpillar journeing between two trees, but decided to do Mononoke over that.
first of princess mononoke was not dubbed by disney if you did not know that second off I actually think they are trying to get more closer to the voice actors in japan, I am japanese an I have seen this movie before and I think studio ghibli knows to where they put their trust. im sorry but no dub is perfect. and I thought it was pixar that did all the other ones and well i guess pixar is owned by disney now. :) I am trying not to sound rude but all are very judgemental.
I saw this about a year back and loved it. The whole time I was comparing it to Miyazaki's best films, and then found out later that it wasn't Miyazaki's at all! Not sure how I'll like the dub, but this means we'll get a DVD soon enough, so that's good.
I absolutely loved this soft little tale in the Japanese original dub, and I'd love to see how they did with the English translation. I just discovered it this month and HAD to buy it! To all who have yet to see it: it's a lovely translation of the classic book, and you won't be disappointed.
The dub for this actually sounds really good, David Henry did a great job. The voice actually sounds like it would come from this boy, only thing is that it sounds kinda weird when he says "Arriety".
@KarrieDreammind5 Because Disney for some ungodly reason, is using their talent to port over these lazily written movies. One the few reasons why these films have such mass appeal, besides the animation and music that covers the lazy writing, is the fact that Disney is huge name, and by associating their brand with these films, their hardcore fans will associate their name with this movie and therefore think Disney=Japanese Obscurantism=QUALITY!!!
Hmm, I think as far as dubs go I actually liked the UK version better. And they changed Sho's name to Shaun/Sean? Not QUITE sure why, but it just seems... I dunno. xD I might be dreaming, but this version just seems a bit off.
I admire the advance steps in making a film that is truly unqiue! I can't wait to see this masterpiece! It compares to Spirit Away however more of a balance with characters and story, just from what I see so far.
The Japanese like giving classic books a manga/anime treatment. I loved watching the amine version of Belle & Sebastian with a "fan" English dubbed DVD.
I Hate when they hire voice actors over fame then actually skill or suitability, they did it with Ponyo, Spirited away was good.
But what I hate most of all is that at the start of this trailor it's the bloody disney castle, NOT the ghibli logo (totoro, king of the forrest hahahha)
This should be advertised as a ghibili film with Disney as the dubbers (which they are) also mention of ghibli film other then Spirited Away and Ponyo.
What about Naussica? Laputa? My neighboor Totoro? :D
@DjLsdMixes Monoke was before spirited away and the popularity with howl's moving castle was unexpected.
Disney has only gotten on boared with Ghibli after Spirited away, they're just trying to get on a band wagon that they didn't expect to become as popular as it did.
But I will credit them for putting totoro in Toy story 3, that was a REALLY nice detail.
@TheTelenation I know! When I saw that in Toy Story 3 I was the only one of my friends who got that; it's a shame that the Miyazaki films are so obscure.
@TheTelenation I should point out I saw this film weeks ago... and there is was, the Totoro logo of Ghibli, sure it had the Disney Castle, but it had the Totoro logo and that's good enought for me.
@TheTelenation I agree completely. It's like disney couldn't come up with stories like this on their own, so they are trying to cash in on Miyazaki's work. Furthermore, the english voice acting for Ghibli's movies have gotten steadily worse over the years, and the whole re-release of Totoro with the new dub TOTALLY marked that change. In my opinion, DON'T WATCH THE ENGLISH DUB. The Japanese version is MUCH better. Trust me. This trailer was enough to make me cringe at the dub and altered lines.
Ponyo was the first ghibli film that I felt the dub was poor
I haven't watched a ghibli film in japanese all the way through except Ponyo.
Even though with a few I have no comparrison between the dub and Original I never had a sneaking supicion that the original would be better, That's when a dub has been done well when it does the flm and characters Jus Ponyo was NOT that. Laputa was brilliantly done, all the characters were voiced with such charm.
@TheTelenation Well, let me clarify. All Ghibli films with English dubs PRE-RELAUNCH of Totoro were excellent. After that, the dubs were starting to just get rather disappointing. In my case, I always make sure to watch both versions of each film (english dub & Jap orig.), and 8/10 times find that the Japanese original is better. Howl's Moving Castle made me cringe at Sophie's British accent, and I prefer her original Japanese voice. Ponyo I will never watch in English ever again.
@TheTelenation furthermore, you must have not seen a lot of anime (at least in Japanese) in order to conclude a "sneaking suspicion" that the Japanese version is better. In Japan, of course they look for talent, but they also look for actors that suit the characters in the anime. In America it seems all they look for is talent, and big/familiar names. If you watch more anime in Japanese, or asian films in their native language, I'm sure you'll quickly learn that original is better
@LilSugarDoll oh I KNOW the original will always be better but like to try the dubs too because folks have worked hard on that too and it's worth a look at but not too long ago it used to be about talent over fame, like I have no clue any od the folks that did grave of the fireflies but it was well done but in Ponyo it felt very very very lacking.
Quite a few mainstream animes are getting like that and it's part of the reaso why I don't watch animes much anymore (that plus I has no monies haha)
Eh I much prefer to watch the Japanese with subtitles. The translation feels as if its lost something even if its a preview. Yea, the music from Cecile Corbel is one thing missing for sure!
To all those interested in this anime film, and giving Hayao Miyazaki another undeserved Oscar, please search "Confused Matthew Spirited Away."
I'm not looking forward to this adaptation, especially after Miyazaki raped Howl's Moving Castle and Johnathan Swift's classic Guliver's Travels.
Anyway, what is it with the Japanese, and their obsession with raping classic English literature? Or better yet, their obsession with rape in general? Specifically tentacle rape.
@TheTheDeclaration You have just gotten one thing and mashed anything REMOTELY related to it and mashed it together.
The Author of howl's moving castel said she LOVED the film and unlike western film where they feel the need to try and stay 100% true to the literature (and inevitably fail and disapoint) Miyuzaki uses things like the original texts as inspiration or a bases, rather then copying it.
Also spirited away was his own story, after he met the moody daughter of a friend :) (true story)
omg i watched this movie subbed and its REALLY GOOD! i cant wait for it to be dubbed so i can show my family! cuz apparently they dont like subtitles.
the movie looks so cute & adorable! there is no doubt that The Secret World of Arrietty will be another wonderful movie from Disney and Studio Ghibli!!!!! i can't wait for it to come out in theaters! :
and IStarboyI is right, the music in this was beautiful. Very nice combination with the anime, making the movie an even better package.
