I like the idea of a timeline stringing the games together. And even though there might not have been an original timeline the team is working off of, they have always had some element connecting the games into some form of timeline, and I think that is also a part of the charm of the games. There is always something new and yet something always familiar.

i personally think ocarina of time splits the timeline into 3 different sections. twice in OOT, someone says you did something as a child that you didnt do yet (the windmill guy and the pirate chick) so its not too hard to believe that in one timeline link didnt go back in time, and lived his life in hyrule. that would mean when gannon came back link killed him again, and the world isnt flooded. which leads to the two NES games and twilight princess.

I think Wind Waker is supossed to be generations after the original games. It then spawned another line of Zelda games(phantom hourglass and spirit tracks). I'm not really that big of a Zelda fan but I enjoy the games and that's the point, right?

It's highly probable that Link isn't just the same person in every game. He is in Ocarina and Majora but other than that he seems to be reincarnated into a blonde kid over and over.

Well, I think that there is different Links in each game, if it's not meant to be a sequal (like Wind Waker - Phantom Hourglass) and they awaken just because their names. My theory of Twilight Princess is that it takes place after Wind Waker because in the end of Wind Waker, the king of Hyrule says that there is another land, that will be occupied by Tetra (Zelda) to be the new Hyrule. And that's where Twilight Princess takes place. Sorry for this long comment and this mess.

It was supposed to be the windwaker sequel but nintendo wanted a darker series so they began the Twilight Princess series.
