Another truly amazing song is 'It's yourself.' Over the years, it's quite possible that Shirley decided to replace it with 'I Who Have Nothing?!' Both high drama, over the top, yet sincere songs. Would have LOVED to have seen her perform 'it's yourself' at Carnegie Hall, etc. WOW!
@JadedAngel23 - 99% of the comments are favorable. Constructive criticism about song arrangement is fine. But, childish/imature comments from people who were 'jaded' because their favorite singer didn't win an 'idol' competition are not allowed. We get it...you don't like Shirley Bassey, who by the way had a hit with this song back in 1964, and here she is singing it in her 40's in 1979....Of course she doesn't sing it the same way now....So why keep coming back...just move on.
What an incredible voice! This lady could entertain a whole stadium, even without amplifiers... None of the 7-times oversampling shit and whatnot which most of the modern "stars" use these days.... (you couldn't hear some of them from the end of a normal living room, if the power went out...)
The original song is made in Italy by the authors Donida and Mogol ,with the original title of (Uno dei Tanti) recorded in 1961 by Joe Sentieri. ---Tom Jones e Shirley Bassey are covers.
@MoNaturalButterfly - Shirley had a big hit with this song back in 1964, but she didn't write it. Shirley is not a song writer, but she has always known a good song when she hears it. With between 135-140 Million Records sold worldwide, this Dame is done very well for herself for always having to record/sing songs which have been written by others.
Bassey knew instincively what worked for her voice - choices of material that without a laser sharp understanding of her voice you wouldn't dream she would cover
The Beatles' "Something" and "Day By Day" from "Godspell" - "Never Never Never" "The Ballad Of The Sad Young Men" "Jesse" by Janis Ian - the list goes on - many of them she fought the producers to put on her albums - her version of "Something sold more than The Beatles' own version of the song
Shirley can sing songs so well you believe she lived it before singing it to an audience. She always has a wonderful arrangement behind her which takes a talented orchestra and band.
A true performer and singer relives every meaning behind their every song to give the audience their best. And is always surprised and humbled by the reaction they receive from those listening.
I love the way Dame Shirley performed live of this song. She was full of emotions and walked away from the microphone at the end, really bring tears to your eyes.
Shirley Bassey though underrated, but to me one of the best singer in the world.. I salute you Shirley...
