I just watched this movie and I loved it to pieces. But the ending confused to me. I don't understand why Luis (Hurt) sets up a rendezvous with the police and why they all start shooting at him. And the last scene where Valentin (Julia) gets shot up with morphine after being brutally beaten by his captors and dreams of his one true love. It seems awfully depressing because Valentin's just gonna wake up and get tortured some more. But mostly I don't understand why Luis got shot. Somebody explain?
@164ItsAllAboutMe164 Luis was going to meet Valentin's girlfriend (the girl in the car) to give the information he gave to him, but the police came and started the shots cause Luis was supposed to continue to help them, not Valentin. So, the resistence (the gilr and the guy in the car) realized that he had information and if the police caught, he would talk, so they kill him. (sorry for the english)
The most interesting theme of the movie is the exchange that ocurred between the two men thrown into exceptional circumstancs i.e. one 'taught' the other to escape into an inner world beyond the reach of torture (read the ancient Greek Philosopher Epitectus)the other inspired his friend to find inner courage which seemed antithetical to to gay protagonist's personality. Both grew in human terms and found new freedom...it goes well beyong learning to love regardless of sexual orientation etc...

I read the book and then saw the movie. I'm argentinian and as such an spanish speaker. The movie doesn't reflect many things, one of them how Valentin (the more masculine character) uses Molina (the transexual) to satisfy him sexually, often with disgust and telling him to "shut up and hold still" and then to help him outside and die for a cause it wasn't his. Regardless of anything, a way to spoil a book, a fine book whose moral is "don't love people who will f@#ck you over", in both cases.
Man, I just saw this movie on VHS for the first time. I'm 22, so it came out the year I was born. Great preformances from Raul and William. What wonderful actors they are. It's unbelievable.
And it hit me hard because I checked his bio stuff and I had no idea he died THAT long ago. I was a big fan of the Street Fighter movie, although I was 8 years old, and now that I know he died in 1994, it seems so weird. Because that means he died the year that Street Fighter was released and was ill with cancer while he filmed it. It puts you in a different perspective. It's sad.
Not a pretty movie, but one that can affirm one's ability to have compassion towards another person, no matter your political affiliation, religion or sexual orientation. (I am straight, moderate American Catholic female, myself) Great performances. Humanity theme. Strong and sometimes repellent subject matter, but it is uplifting in intent and effect, and should be on DVD. But study recent L.American history and be ready; It is for people who are prepared to be adults.
An AWSOME movie. This movie is all about humanity and unselfish love. It is about how two opposit people can be so human to love the other unconditionally. Valentin did not have sex with Molina for having homosexual feelings but for being so human to let all his predjudism go and love Molina for the way he wanted to be loved.
What a beautiful film. Love is not love when alteration finds...Shakespeare. I guess it means that it can come in all shapes & sizes and we're lucky to find it in any shape or form.
I saw this movie when it first came out in the 80's. It brought me to tears. The performances by William Hurt and Raul Julia are so convincing, so real. The subject matter is on the dark side but the overall message I came away with is that love can come in all forms in the most unlikely situations. Wonderful movie. I would love to have it on dvd.
Damn I want to see this movie so badly!! I heard that it was great and even my father, who avoids homosexuality in movies if he can help it, loves it, and seeing that clips demonstrates the powerful atmosphere of it and... I just have to see this.

Did not understand Hurt's question at the beginning (English is not my first language). What did he ask?

damn, it's a shame Raul Julia is dead. He's one of the greatest character actors I've seen.
