If he's using what I think he's using then they're actually quite cheap. You would be looking at around the Au$10 mark +/- $5, depending on supplier, model etc.
Look up PIC, it is a commonly used Microcontroller made by Microchip and would be fine for this kind of application.
The computer I use is a a PICaxe on a custom board. All surface mount.
