  • Hey shug have you ever been bit by a skeeter through your hammock

    Thanks

  • @Captkujo1 I haven't so far. Some have. Depends on what is under you and that is why some like double layer hammocks.

  • But shug wouldn't you rather opt for the flatter lay?

  • @TheMattFrom1996 I am happy to be out of the house no matter what the lay or lie.

  • @shugemery Hahaha, no I meant that wouldn't you rather tighten the hammock suspension to get a flatter lay in the hammock?

  • Shug,

Thanks for the awesome videos. I still reference these often. I'm starting to get started in the dreaded DIY phase of my hammocking experience, and was wondering how you install the whoopsie sling ridge line into your hammock. Do you capture the ends inside the whipping? Thanks

    Corey aka HamptonHanger (hammock forums.net)

  • @millerca1986 No...you just slip them over the end of the suspension coming off the whipping like at 6:00 on video #4.

  • at 2:09 is the reason why I hammock camp - not to mention a good nights rest. thumbs up nice vids!

  • tell these folks there are hammocks out there with zips on both sides & (thats cool) the switchback, DD hammocks and others. I use the switchback nonet hammock in the winter w/ a peapod & summer w/ the warboonet bug net. just what we like. like your videos. (use to think you were goofy but your not, cool dude!

  • @1swampwalker Yessir. Switchback was not even available when I made this series. It is a good hammock.

    Maybe goofy and cool....thanks.

  • Thanks, Shug, and keep those great videos coming!

  • Hey, Shug. Always great videos. I was wondering about the dimensions of your DIY hammock, and what grade (i.e. 1.1, 1,7, 1,9) of ripstop nylon you used. Thanks.

  • @flyefysch 114" long and 60" wide. Used 1.9 ripstop.

  • Shug ? I doubt you can answer this, but I just gotta ask.

Q: Why the eff is the Blackbird zipper (and others) on the LEFT HAND SIDE ? !

... I mean, since most people and most sleeping bags (liners, bivys, etc.) are RIGHT HANDED !? ... What is up wid DAT ? !

  • @phrankus2009 Most hammock hard-cores use a zipperless top-quilt. He will custom make one the other way though. Many do.

  • @shugemery My oint is that it would appear (to me) that thhis is a ploy to FORCE the purchase of specialized gear, in order to secure a workable solution ... not cool (IMO) ...

... Most of us have invested in very decent (expensive) sleep systems and it would seem more helpful (less predatory) to me, if the hammock manufacturers would make hammock access RIGHT HANDED, to be compatible with mainstream gear and common ergonomics ... Quite a "cheap shot", (FORCING LH access) to MY mind.

  • hey shug got some questions, i know your rocking specs and alot of essential info but im noticing some vast differences in price and whatnot when i go play web searchy. im still kind lost with all the options. on hammockery that is. thanks for the info and the way its delivered! CeDD

  • @CasevacDevilDoc They do vary. in cost and comfort and all that. As in most things....go mid-range.

  • I really like that Blackbird hammock with the mosquito netting - it's kinda like a hanging tent! Very cool. I was wondering what kind of anti-bug set-up you could have with a hammock - now I know! These videos are so much fun, Shug! Thanks!

  • TOUR BUTT IS NOT SKEETER FREE!

  • @surfnfx So you know?

  • Now that is nifty! An integrated mosquito netting tent thingey! I wondered what you did in buggy conditions without a tent - now I know! That is very cool.

  • Hey Shug I hope this message finds you doing well, and I hope the fair season is going strong for you.. My question is in the winter wish backpack do you prefer. I have a osprey atmos 50 and with the uq/tq/tarp/and hammock and all the other stuff my pack is pretty full. not heavy but poofy full. just wondering which one you prefer for winter??? Tx Shane aka Tiredhiker

  • @fustratedfisher For my winter trips .... ULA Catalyst.

  • Hey man thanks alot for these series of video. They have helped me out alot. Between the hammock fourm and youtube I'm picking up alot.

  • @jons4real For that ... I am happy and glad !!!!!!

  • I love this vid. I miss my days swinging in the forest. I love hammock camping!

  • @musicimprovedme

    Me too! Good to hear......

  • what is ur hammock made out of i know its like fleace or something but is it like a tarp thats modifid please respond

  • @wildside126 It is made of i.7 ripstop nylon.

  • Where did you get the woopee sling/thing from?

  • I'm so happy you did this series Shuggy. Starting to make my Hammock and this answered a lot of questions for me

  • I been having some good fun with it!!!!

  • With the blackbird hammock, can the mosquitoes bite through the bottom of the hammock? or are you supposed to use a pad?

  • They can .... but he has a double layer that you can put a pad in. Takes a big skeeter to bite through that!!

down to around 70º you need some sort of bottom insulation.

  • Your choice!

  • You're the reason I use a hammock. Great Videos, Very Informative. Looking forward to the tarp videos. All the Best Buddy !!!

  • That is cool.

  • LOL Great stuff!!! informative and funny!! my fav!

  • Thats what I wanne hear!

  • 5 starz as always me friend. Me computa took a bonnie dive it did, and i missed ya just a wee bit there Shug. But I'm back now, don't cha know. Wavin at me pals on Hasmmock Forums...Dain Brammage is a comin, he is. He's a comin in a wee bit.

  • Welcome to being back.

    Thankee.

  • WHOOOPIEEEE!! (sling)

I've always found that it's best to be careful where you sling your whoopie...

  • Hard to resist that ... huh?

    Ha....

  • hey shug your videos are increasing my intrest in hammock camping. i thought about it a few years ago and did a lil research but the price of the high end ones turned me off. but intrest increasing! thanks great job. btw: what about hammocks for big guys? and 6'+ 300lb hammock guys?

  • I would also like to know. Maybe making one like you did.

  • Lotsa big fellers use hammocks ..... Warbonnets, Speers, Jacks r Better, Clarks .....

  • thank u shug luv u vids 5*

  • Shug, you are a gem of teh youtubes.

    -hammockforums foolhardy

  • Great video set Shug! I use Paracord instead of webbing to wrap around the trees to keep my hammock up. Since the military grade is 550lbs test strength and very light weight. I way about 230Lbs, and have not yet had any issue. Is there a reason you guys prefer webbing?

  • Thanks .... we use webbing to protect the tree thus not giving folks something to get on us about..... it's good!

  • @shugemery Thanks - I appreciate the reply!

  • Mmmm. I shore do like me some Shug ham-ock videos. Yessir!

  • I like dat.

  • Shug BigT here, I have been going light for some time thinking about hammock, can not get around the added weight. My sleeping rig is a lot lighter. OMG what to do. How bought ya do a vid on trapen, yes just tarpen. Grap man you can do it.........

  • I go for the added comfort ..... winter the hammock gets a wee heavier but warmer weather it is less so. i have a Tarptent but ain't used it in a couple of years.

Been thinking of doing a vid with that and my canister stove ... two things I don't use much lately. I'll be a bit lighter but I know not as comfortable.

Plus for me is .... hammocks are just more fun!

  • Yes actually the tarps are exciting.

  • well done shug I swear your video editing is awesome job and well thought out. 5/5 stars. which camera have you been useing lately

  • I been using a digital camera ... Canon PowerShot SD 960 IS .... little and sweet!

  • thanks for another entertaining episode!

hopefully winter will be done in a few weeks

or I'll have to cut more firewood here in rural Missouri

  • We still got a couple months of it.......

  • as always alsome

  • Is the Ridgeline on the BB adjustable?

  • Not really ...... you can and folks have shortened it with knots but it makes the netting droopy in my opinion.

  • Best one yet!

A great idea would be if you can get all the different hammock makers to send you a hammock so you could do a video on each of the different kinds of hammock!

  • Whoa ......... I would need a super huge hard drive!

  • You're going to have an excellent view of that falling branch coming at ya, Shug!

  • My kevlar bug net and evil eyes will protect me from branch droppings ........

  • And what clever tricks do you have in your coffer for defending against liquified bird droppings, lad?

  • They are like sunscreen to me...

  • SPF dirty thirty? eeehehehe

  • Keep them coming! Lovin' it!

  • completely new to this hammock thing, how much weight will they hold? obviously they are tried and tested but they look so flimsy!

  • most double layer ones will hold well over 375. that's a big man.

  • I know fellers over 350 pounds hanging. Most use a double bottom hammock .... Warbonnet makes some. Most hammock companies give weight ratings.

  • love the shelf my Henny doesn't have one

  • The BlackBird is "special" that way!!!!

  • Coming home and finding a new Shug video is even more exciting than finding a UPS box from Ed Speer on the front porch :) What a great series! Thanks Shug!

  • Great series Shug you may convert me yet

  • My mission is not to convert but to help those in mid-conversion ........

Maybe someday you too shall hang in sweet comfort.

    I thankee

  • Well either way buddy we appreciate ya thankee

  • Great series so far :-) Thanks! I'm sure you've inspired loads of people to try hammocking.

  • Well .... I am more trying to help those that have them and are still doing some head-scratching trying to figure it all out. bit more work and fiddling than tent camping,

  • Very very kool dude You are the Hammock Man :o) We have Pterodactyl Skeeters in these parts...hehe! I'm a netting guy too :o) Without it, I'm sure I'd wake up dead! 5 big shiny stars :o)

  • You betcha do up there. Big uns'......

    Cheers

  • How do you get two people in one of those things?

  • Well ....... some can get two into a BlackBird. Clark Hammocks make one called the Vertex for 2 people.

  • Really liked that stand alone netting it seemed to be perfect for those skeeters that want to bite through the underside of your hammock like they do me.

You are right I thought we had the worst skeeters in the world but when I went to MN I found out where the grandparents of our sleeters are they live in MN see we didnt just get tsome of our dirt from MN we got a lotta skeeters too. One was so tough he was wearing a flea jacket.

  • Funny ..... and true!

  • I remember first time in MN i got out the truck and said I have till tomorrow to deliver I think ill take my metaldetector over there and find some relics. B4 I got there i felt things hitting me I thought big flies then one landed on me started drilling for blood and I thought no way they have sketers that big this far north but there they were skeeters about a gram in wieght each. Those things would leave a bruise like a bad nurse.

  • lovin' the series

  • Some great gags there with all that info Shug. Nicely done!

  • Great info and very entertaining. I wish I lived near you Shug, I would love to meet up and go hiking/camping with you.

  • Great Info as usual, thanks.

  • i still love ya shug dont worry...

  • My worries are over ..... t'anks.

  • That last bit with the voice change was so funny! I am now going to buy warbonnet's bug net after seeing it based on this vid.

Could you cover how to install the ridge line and how to know it's the correct length.

  • It is a good bug net!

The ridgeline length is upo to you ..... and how much sag. Start at 100" and go either way from there. It just hooks to on end of the hammock with a loop ... where the suspension meets the whipping. Take it to the other end and do the same .. tie a knot that you can untie easily and start checking your perfect sag. Easy as pie.
