I completely agree with you. Anyway, being goth doesn't mean being sad and moody. Goth is a style, not a personality. Limiting yourself to the social norm is just silly.
I wish more people like you understood how important it is to just be yourself and live your life the way you want it rather than by someone else's rules. Life's too short anyways to live it like something you're not.

Frankly, I think "dark and depressing" is possibly as far away as Goth as it gets. Goth came out of the post-punk movement, a genre of music still very culturally and politically aware, but with a glam-rock sensibility. The aesthetic happened to appear dark because it reflected the paranoid nature of the times, almost a parody to the brightly-colored antics happening elsewhere. It had little to do with being maudlin and morose, and all to do with good music.
