@nav2491i actually it entirely depends on the rider. at this race, and seen in the video there was a fair few people on hardtails and the guy who came 2nd on the day was riding a hardtail. so as i say, depends entirely on the rider. i can't give top notch advice without knowing what bike he rides, how he rides, what he rides or how long he has been riding. sorry to dissapoint...
to be fair i ride a 140 hardtail and find it handles this stuff fairly well(obviasly not a smooth but hey), so i would say go for it and also you gain better technique riding a hardtail than a big bouncer that does everything for you :)
