actually the engines hyundai used before on its older cars where developed in a partnership of 3 companys, hyundai, chrysler, and mitsubishi so the engines where distributed by the 3 companys and tuned to their own specs, thats why you see the 2.7L , older 2.4L and older 2.0L engines on all 3 companys. the engines are no provided by mitsubishi, but hyundai no longer uses any of those engines anymore, it now makes it own engines as well as mitsubishi and sadly for chrysler will have fiat engines

If it was my Genesis, I'd have gone with 20" Asanti's rather than TIS. They're classier and less drug-dealer like. probably switch to genesis badges with a KDM steering wheel face to get rid of the Hyundai logos. I'd probably skip out on the sound system and invest in an exhaust/intake/chip upgrade. But hey, to each his own. I like everything else they did (especially the suede headliner).
Hyundai has made a nice car with the Genesis, but like other Hyundai models, they copied other cars. Front end looks like a Mercedes S500 and the back looks like an Infiniti M35.
If Hyundai can come up with great looking original designs, I'll have more respect for them as a car company.

Dude, I am not trying to have an uneducated arguement, I just want you to realize that although the Genesis is not up to par with the luxury competitors at the moment, it's attempt is very prestigious for a brand that comes from the, well lets face it, the "slums" of car manufacturers. Hyundai had it's goal and they basically whooped its ass. Yes, they stole some ideas from other cars, but how couldnt they since they define the market they're competing in. For the first generation Genesis its a+

The point you're trying to make is one of opinion so nobody can really win. Hyundai will never be able to grab the luxury market because nobody will buy a 60k hyundai if they were to bring it up to par with the other brands.
The VW Phaeton is a perfect example. Nobody wanted to blow that much money on a VW which is why it failed
I understand your point but the phaeton was around 110k if I remember. This car start at a 30k. For a lexury car it is well priced. Compared to paying 80k for a bmw you still have 50 left to play with and still get a nice car. Its not about looking at it as a hundai but how hard they are trying to become a better company and their success.
Second, the point isnt to buy a 60k car. The point is to buy a car that looks just as nice as any other luxury sedan at an affordable price. You dont grab an audience here in america by brand here anymore its take what you can get. If it looks nice you take it. Other brands are expensive thus hyundai.
It was never about brand. You really should drive the 550i and the Genesis. The 550i out performs the Genesis with a wide margin every time. The leather is higher quality, the services are endless (24hr concierge, 50k mile free maintenance, free loaner cars etc) , the technology like the idrive is far more advanced than anything Hyundai has to offer, and the plastics and metals are far better in quality as well. Its not brand, its quality of materials, service, and performance.
i think its about value. for 33k or 38k u get alot of standard features for a lot less than the euro or jap models. I like the 5 series but this car is cheaper and in the long run will prob be cheaper to keep(insurance cost, mpg). However, a new question arises, "How reliable is it? Will it last as long as a bmw?" I agree with ur statement "you get what you pay for, plain and simple" but for less :)
That, I will give you. Hyundai has always given the consumer a few more gadgets for the buck. Unfortunately, they're the gadgets that have been around for a while so they never bring cutting edge technology like the luxury brands. So, if you want the latest and greatest, you're not going to find it in any Hyundai. But, if you want a comfortable car with a few creature comforts you could only find in more expensive cars, this would work out well.
Also, keep in mind that the true luxury brands that don't have cheaper sister companies like lexus/toyota, acura/honda aren't designed to last without issues for 10+ years (i.e. BMW/Bends/Maserati/Range Rover/Aston Martin etc.).
Most owners of true luxury brands don't hold on to the cars for more than about 5 years because they always want to switch to the latest and greatest. So many of them are leased rather than purchased (bigger tax write-off) so they dont worry about longevity
Its like flying first class (internationally i.e. Lufthansa, SIA etc). You're literally paying anywhere from $10-$20k for first class as opposed to coach where you pay no more than $800-$900. So whats the reason for the huge price difference? You get a much bigger seat that turns into a bed, cutting edge in-flight technology/entertainment, 5 star meals/drinks/wines and impeccable service...
To relate it to this, you get what you pay for, plain and simple

Adding insult to injury for you, mwj, I own a new M5 and prior to that I had a '07 Lexus GS 350. I've looked at the Genesis and its just not as good as all the other luxury brands. However, it is slower and performs worse than every other car in its class. Additionally, it doesnt even offer as many luxury amenities...thats a fact

First, I never compared the M5 to the hyundai, I simply mentioned that I own one and I had a GS 350 prior to that.
Second, even a bottom of the line V-6 powered 535 does the 0-60 and 1/4 mile faster by more than 1/2 a second compared to hyundais loaded V-8 engine. That is an irrefutable fact.
Finally, hyundai's performance around the track falls behind the GS 350 and especially BMW's 5 series. Again, thats fact

@sacdude20, the reason they do not have the logo in front is that they used one of Korean markets grill for American market. It uses winged badge instead of Hyundai logo, looks really really nice btw with that winged badge. In other places, they use different g rill with hyundai badge on it.
They used the grill so it could be quickly mistaken for a Bednz, thank you for making my point. This car is not innovative or unique in any way other than the fact that its been cheaped out with poor quality leather and cheap plastic parts throughout.

But whenever i look at car, i look at the headlights first, rather than grill. so i am not too crazy about the grill. And i am not sure where you get the cheap quality, the leather is on par with any luxury out there.

actually, the "leather' in a new 328i is pleather unless you get the "premium" leather option. 4.6L Genesis's come standard with premium leather. I should know, we own a 335i.

the old hyundai , chrysler and mitsubishi engines where built in a partnertship called (GEMA) global engine manufacturing alliance, but since hyundai and mitsu stoped using those engines , chrysler bought the rights to the company and now only chrysler can use those older engines. the engines where not japanese technology, thats why some mitsubishis like for example the old eclipse and galant had a daimler chrysler logo printed under the hood on the catalyst sticker.

actually the engines hyundai used before on its older cars where developed in a partnership of 3 companys, hyundai, chrysler, and mitsubishi so the engines where distributed by the 3 companys and tuned to their own specs, thats why you see the 2.7L , older 2.4L and older 2.0L engines on all 3 companys. the engines are no provided by mitsubishi, but hyundai no longer uses any of those engines anymore, it now makes it own engines as well as mitsubishi and sadly for chrysler will have fiat engines

in korea, it already came out for $95,000 above. It might come out to US by end of 2009 for around 45-55k USD. Pretty decent price for a very luxuroious car, i mean think about it, other luxury brands costs bunch to buy the car part and fixt it whereas hyundai parts are not that much and convinent. =) check out new hyundai equus..you wont regret..

If it was my Genesis, I'd have gone with 20" Asanti's rather than TIS. They're classier and less drug-dealer like. probably switch to genesis badges with a KDM steering wheel face to get rid of the Hyundai logos. I'd probably skip out on the sound system and invest in an exhaust/intake/chip upgrade. But hey, to each his own. I like everything else they did (especially the suede headliner).

Hyundai has made a nice car with the Genesis, but like other Hyundai models, they copied other cars. Front end looks like a Mercedes S500 and the back looks like an Infiniti M35.
If Hyundai can come up with great looking original designs, I'll have more respect for them as a car company.
They were smart to get rid of the Hyundai logo on the front. Otherwise, no one would buy it.

Dude, I am not trying to have an uneducated arguement, I just want you to realize that although the Genesis is not up to par with the luxury competitors at the moment, it's attempt is very prestigious for a brand that comes from the, well lets face it, the "slums" of car manufacturers. Hyundai had it's goal and they basically whooped its ass. Yes, they stole some ideas from other cars, but how couldnt they since they define the market they're competing in. I understand your point but the phaeton was around 110k if I remember. This car start at a 30k. For a lexury car it is well priced. Compared to paying 80k for a bmw you still have 50 left to play with and still get a nice car. Its not about looking at it as a hundai but how hard they are trying to become a better company and their success.

It was never about brand. You really should drive the 550i and the Genesis. The 550i out performs the Genesis with a wide margin every time. The leather is higher quality, the services are endless (24hr concierge, 50k mile free maintenance, free loaner cars etc) , the technology like the idrive is far more advanced than anything Hyundai has to offer, and the plastics and metals are far better in quality as well. Its not brand, its quality of materials, service, and performance.

i think its about value. for 33k or 38k u get alot of standard features for a lot less than the euro or jap models. I like the 5 series but this car is cheaper and in the long run will prob be cheaper to keep(insurance cost, mpg). However, a new question arises, "How reliable is it? Will it last as long as a bmw?" I agree with ur statement "you get what you pay for, plain and simple" but for less :)

That, I will give you. Hyundai has always given the consumer a few more gadgets for the buck. Unfortunately, they're the gadgets that have been around for a while so they never bring cutting edge technology like the luxury brands. So, if you want the latest and greatest, you're not going to find it in any Hyundai. But, if you want a comfortable car with a few creature comforts you could only find in more expensive cars, this would work out well.

Also, keep in mind that the true luxury brands that don't have cheaper sister companies like lexus/toyota, acura/honda aren't designed to last without issues for 10+ years (i.e. BMW/Bends/Maserati/Range Rover/Aston Martin etc.).
Most owners of true luxury brands don't hold on to the cars for more than about 5 years because they always want to switch to the latest and greatest. So many of them are leased rather than purchased (bigger tax write-off) so they dont worry about longevity

Its like flying first class (internationally i.e. Lufthansa, SIA etc). You're literally paying anywhere from $10-$20k for first class as opposed to coach where you pay no more than $800-$900. So whats the reason for the huge price difference? You get a much bigger seat that turns into a bed, cutting edge in-flight technology/entertainment, 5 star meals/drinks/wines and impeccable service...
To relate it to this, you get what you pay for, plain and simple

True - but there's something to be said about taking a $150,000 benz and customizing that further over modding a $20,000 civic. I think it's really more about creating a unique ride that suits you and fits in the budget.

That sure is a pretty car. Like, I know they took the styles from like two or three other cars, but they took the best stuff from all of them I think. It's hotter than my previous favorite: S Class.

Adding insult to injury for you, mwj, I own a new M5 and prior to that I had a '07 Lexus GS 350. I've looked at the Genesis and its just not as good as all the other luxury brands. Most of the people supporting this are kids like you who are thrilled that they can buy a 40k car that advertises itself as being better than the real luxury brands. However, it is slower and performs worse than every other car in its class. Additionally, it doesnt even offer as many luxury amenities...thats a fact

Bighorse, you're so freak'n wrong on everything you just stated, haha.
First, I never compared the M5 to the hyundai, I simply mentioned that I own one and I had a GS 350 prior to that.
Second, even a bottom of the line V-6 powered 535 does the 0-60 and 1/4 mile faster by more than 1/2 a second compared to hyundais loaded V-8 engine. That is an irrefutable fact.
Finally, hyundai's performance around the track falls behind the GS 350 and especially BMW's 5 series. Again, thats fact

II understand that people really want to be able to get a Bendz/BMW/Audi/Lexus/Infiniti for the price of a hyundai, but it just doesn't work that way. Ya, some of the price is inflated for the name, but most of it is because of this one simple fact:
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. For example, you dont pay for maintenance for years with a new BMW, you get a BMW loaner car every time you need service, you have access to the 24hr concierge etc.....and thats just the service, not the amenities

@sacdude20 i understand where your coming from....but if you haven't driven the genesis then i don't think you should be talking... i work at a dealership and i have driven many cars.... i have driven the s-class and bmw 7 series... genesis is not in the same class... but as hyundai's first luxury car i think it's very innovative.. its something you can't look down on... but i can tell you this much... it is better than most of the cars that is worth 40thousand dollars in the market

bigfly, I agree with you that hyundai has stepped up and created the nicest car yet for its fleet. However, it doesn't compare against a lot of the other brands. People here are arguing that because its cheaper, its better and just as good, but it can't be further from the truth. Every other luxury car out performs the hyundai and offers more luxury amenities and services than the hyundai does...plain and simple fact. Again, its a good car for the price, but its not better than the luxury brands

Okay, DUHHHH! It's not supposed to compete perfectly with the veterens of this class. It's a baby in a field Hyundai is new too. Understand this, for the first stab they did phenominal and I expect a lot of modest car companies to follow this cue, well at least the oriental companies too. The Hyundai has no chance at being at the same level as the Beemers and the Benz', they've had forever to perfect their own. But while they took 50+ years to get where they are, Hyundai got close in one. LOL

Ok, first off, YES IT IS! Thats what they're pushing for in all their adds, dummy. For the first stab at it, it didn't take any effort at all. Hyundai didn't introduce a SINGLE piece of innovative design or technology that the luxury brands haven't already had for years.
Adding to that, they couldn't even design the body on their own without trying to impersonate the grill/front of the Bendz and the side profile of the Lexus. Theres a reason you don't see hyundai's logo on the front, haha

Impersonation on other cars' styling is a common theme in the car industry: see the similarities on how the Element was replicated in Scion's xB and now into the Ford Flex and Kia Soul.

@sacdude20, the reason they do not have the logo in front is that they used one of Korean markets grill for American market. It uses winged badge instead of Hyundai logo, looks really really nice btw with that winged badge. In other places, they use different g rill with hyundai badge on it.

They used the grill so it could be quickly mistaken for a Bednz, thank you for making my point. This car is not innovative or unique in any way other than the fact that its been cheaped out with poor quality leather and cheap plastic parts throughout.
If an auto maker is so embarrassed of its own logo that it removes it to make a vehicle more appealing, that should be your first clue.
Kia tried this with their Jag/Bentley imitation and it totally failed to take the market it was after

yes that was their purpose of choosing the grill. that is an accomplishment for them to make people mistakes by just looking at the grill. But whenever i look at car, i look at the headlights first, rather than grill. so i am not too crazy about the grill. And i am not sure where you get the cheap quality, the leather is on par with any luxury out there.

The leather is pleather by the way, its not real leather. The leather even in a bottom of the line 3 series is of better quality and is real leather.

what car did they copy? Yes it is a great acomplisment for hundai. For the last 5 years they have when from competing with kia and geo to lexus and mercedez. That is an acomplisment in my book. When the car first came out if you lookes at it you would bet a millin bucks that its not a hundai. The company has come really far.

actually, the "leather' in a new 328i is pleather unless you get the "premium" leather option. 4.6L Genesis's come standard with premium leather. I should know, we own a 335i.
