Granted Caruso was the Hallmark by which all other tenors were measured and there were several that surpassed him ,especially in this aria where Enrico sounded dreadfully flat , missed coming in on the right tempo and seemed to just drag it along. Listen to Mario Del Monaco and it's a whole different awesome listening experience., MDM just blows you away with his un-comparable vocal dynamics and never went flat .Corelli although not the heroic voice of MDM still with his squillo is amazing.
I'm going to cop it for this comment and i do love Caruso - got the movie, the biographies and everything, but, wait for it...was he really that great or is it all hype? I await your responses.
this is combining the BEL CANTO technique with the NEW veristic qualities that caruso gained in time. THATS why THIS VOICE is regarded as the GREATEST!! NO ONE in the history of recorded sound had these qualities. beauty, power and technical skills above anything we ever heard. ALL vocalists can learn from this example of virtuosity! its perfect. and in ONE take. damn!! still the best and stilll chasing his sound a 100 years later. learn about IT!
Caruso combined a very sophisticated vocal technique with strong emotional expression. Notice how he hits the first of the two high B flats at the end right on, without any scooping. The tone is ringing and steady. He employs the traditional slide up to the final B flat but it is below par.
I don't think it's below par. In fact, I don't think there are any tenors singing this well today. There are certainly stylistic choices evocative of his era, but there's nothing in this performance that's less than great. Furthermore, i think Caruso used even less portamenti than modern-day tenors use on this aria and I'll go further and say that I think the one he used for the last b-flat was appropriate and beautifully executed.

Tebaldi once called Gioconda a tenor opera. It most certainly is especially when the music is sung in the brilliant way Caruso sings it. I also admire greatly Gigli's recording of the aria.

@Etnalleb With all due respect, I think you need to go have your head AND your ears examined. I disagree with every point you made.

If the singers of our day would learn how to speak properly, they would potentially feel the colors that this voice produced in the "singing" form.

Many references to B flat in these comments. Well, I do not know a B flat from a tenement flat. I only know that this performance is wonderful.

See, Caruso isn't using his power in this, he is just using the natural beauty of his voice, which is something a lot of tenors these days can't do.

Too bad Caruso didn't have YOU around to coach him, he might have accomplished something special; as, apparantly, you have.
