  • damn, wouid love to do it, but we don't have anything in the gym where i can do that, not even at the pullover station is it possible to do

  • did these and it bloody tore my hamstring like the ligament behind my knee, cant train legs/play rugby for couple of week now :(

  • I'll know I've made improvement when I can do this -- just once.

  • How do you actually build up enough strength to actually PERFORM one rep of GHR?? Because every time I attempt to do 1 rep I can feel my hamstrings cramping up... I actually attempted GHR after my squats/stiff legged deadlifts.

  • @Claymore2408 Do these on a padded surface with the ankles under a secure and heavy anchor (or partner.) Start down, flat on the floor and use your arms to do an explosive pushup to assist the motion. That, and negatives.

  • the nordic hamraise (poor mans Glute-ham raise) is proven to reduce injuries while sprinting during the eccentric phase

  • Try the Romanian Deadlift instead which will produce an even greater & more direct effect on your deadlift than this exercise.

  • I'm not saying this to be a dick (don't you hate comments that start like this, lol) but I don't find these that hard to do and I've watched this and many others on youtube.

I used to avoid it as I thought I'd look like an ass if I couldn't come back up but I guess my hams were stronger than I thought. I do squat a lot.

I do find it a great excercise to do and keep the hamstrings balanced with the quads.

  • ps that looks hard as shyt, and scary if you can't curl yourself back up lolol

  • ive been in the gym for 7yrs, and I NEVER knew wtf this machine even did (couldn't figure it out) until this video. thanks :D

  • is there a point to doing back extensions on a bench if you can already do ten glute ham raises?

  • this guy knows his shit

    respect.

  • I don't understand the difference between this exercise and regular leg curls.

  • @wowleetomg leg curls only test your hamstrings in terms of flexion, glute ham raises load the hams eccentrcly - ie it has to work as its getting longer, which is one of the most important roles the hamstring has. when your hamstring is weak in the eccentric phase of sprinting it will tear. leg curls got nuthin on this

  • @patchyoyo well said, did you know there are numerous studies proving that it reduces hamstring strains :D, although it's sad some "experts" say it doesn't, i think i'd believe the research and studies, wouldnt you? :)

  • i only can do 2 of these lol.

  • Deffinitely one of my fav exercises. Improved my deadlift and squat I'm pretty sure.

  • hey, it's al from home improvement lolololol

  • Is it weird that I use the Glute Ham Raise Machine for ab-work?

  • how does stiff legged dead lift compare to this?

  • @bobdylan4evr I prefer these to stiff leg DL, you really feel everything working, lower back providing support, glutes bringing your torso up, hamstrings really contracting to continue it, then calves at the top as you bring yourself all the way up. Obviously each has their place though

  • I beleive it says RUTGERS on the wall in the back in 5' letters.

  • talking that casually during a GHR is really impressive. Where is that gym? It's beautiful.

  • @jl92010 looks like a university gym. This guy definitely has strong hamstrings to do this.

  • This must be mr.charisma

    useful video btw

  • if you do find glute ham raise easy (must train it a lot), then try doing it at a tempo of 3 seconds down and 3 seconds up, its a killer.

  • If that band snapped your head would be gone i hate bands they scare me lol

  • OMG, I want to see what this guy looks like sprinting with a post. chain that strong.

  • you white! you ben affleck

  • Dude, you're a beast!

  • its my favorite i can do 15 withs hands or bending over

  • @trachael1002 and partner glute ham raises work it harder

  • Id love to try this out but my school gym doesnt have this. Sad

  • That is a very good exercise. And hard..

  • I deadlift a fair amount so when i came across these i was like PAH! But these are no joke! Havent hit my hamstrings like that in a long while! Its also more fun that deadlifting!

  • woah. this guy is SO sexy. He really knows what he's talking about.

  • Glute ham is such an underrated workout. It is really one of the best things you can do.

  • Great video, thank you so much. I have just started these, and they are killer!

  • long live westside routine!

  • Where is this guy talking from? A gym and where in the US?

  • @noonan94 PArsi Speed School

  • @noonan94 Looks like somewhere near Rutgers...there's a sign hanging on the back wall..which would be in New Jersey...

  • this is a very under rated exercise.

  • That looks like a pretty cool gym.

  • Yeah, my gym doesn't have this special Gluete Ham Raise machine either. How do you mangae without it ?

  • how can i do glute ham raises properly without that machine?

  • check out layne nortons vids of glute ham raise on his channel biolayne. He does them with a regular bench placed in front of a pulldown station

  • @masterjackblack thanks for the info champ

  • is glute ham raise for calves or for butt/thighs >? lol

  • glute ham->ass and hamstring (back of the femur opposite the quads)+calves+lower back.

  • @drika954 It's for "glutes" and "hams". Butt and back leg.

  • good instructional video. mr. Rooney Shows the correct way to perform this exercise.

  • Rooney is a great strength coach. Listen to this guy. Awesome move for posterior chain

  • this is a very hardcore move. Do it first on your leg day, and see how wrecked you are for the rest of the exercises!

  • Do GHR as an assistance move, not primary or first on leg day. If you're squatting or deadlifting with the proper intensity you couldn't do GHR first and perform the big lifts with any intensity.

  • that doesn't make sense, because this move is more difficult than squats or deadlifting to the average person....the body builder with tree trunk legs can do any order, but I find that I have a hell of a time doing this if it's not first, because if I do those other ones first, I'm already worn out and tremble on this move, which sacrifices correct form!

  • Arguing with Internet gurus is pointless.

  • Don't flatter yourself buddy, you don't look like you've been training very long yourself, and you have bad form on some exercises.

  • I'm not going to disrespect a trainer of Martin's caliber and reputation by publicly debating you on a basic training principle.

  • Its number one on my list!

  • This is the only GHR video I could find on here where the guy is using the correct technique/form

  • gegak... I saw people do it on a lat pull down machine... google it or search a video of it...

  • I cant find anything to do it on. help please?

  • try not to break at the hips if you can. you can squeezing your glutes when in the extended position and do not relax them until you're at the top. makes it harder, but increases ham and glute activation more. just a thought

  • Yeah, very nice video! I just got one of these for my gym!!! this, and the reverse hyper, doesnt get better than that!

  • thanks so much for this detailed description, its the clearest Ive seen so far on youtube

  • How do I do it with just a swiss ball??
