The present isn't in old shows. Old shows are in the present. A lot of today's shows are inspired by shows that the creators either watched with their kids or as kids themselves.

I don't think it ever gave the character's name, but in the show he's suppose to be a popular Japanese toy symbol (think Totoro). Watch JCA 2x03 - Jade Times Jade. It makes more sense.

But when they blasted Shendu, he had the dog talisman in him, but yet they still created a hole in Shendu body, then Shendu's hole healed and there wasn't anymore hole and Shendu said the horse taliman did it while he still have the dog talisman. And finn slammed into the wall when he traded the horse talisman for something else and kept the dog talisman, but he got hurt when he slammed into the wall.
