Not only is the sound-collecting sequence unique--giving us an unusual portrait of someone who 'sees' in sounds perhaps more than in visual images--but we can also see how very, very good Travolta was as a young man, with his subtly responsive, expressive face. I wonder what his roles would have been like in maturity if he had continued in that vein.
Wanna know why this film bombed at the box office? Because it had no promotion. Wanna know why Avatar is making a billion dollars right now? You guessed it...Hype! Overhype, at that! And people will say it's great because they were told it was (and it isn't!) This movie speaks for itself! I defy anyone to watch this movie and say that it was just OK or that it sucked. Even Stevie Wonder thinks this is the best movie he's ever seen. LOL!
Superb movie. Beautifully directed by Brian De Palma, with Travolta's finest performance. Tremendous score by Pino Donnagio. The best film of the 80s, imo.
Bar none. I watch this film over and over and it still resounds with me. They just can't make a film with this much integrity anymore. Except for There Will Be Blood with Daniel Day Lewis. It'll be another 25 yrs before I see a movie that great again in a theater. And that's if I live long enough.
i never understood why this movie was so underated at the time, maybe cause people couldnt see john as a serious actor then after his other films where he was a sex symbol,he was good in this I thought.
The reason this film bombed was simply because of it's distibutor which was on it's last legs. Therefore, it didn't get the promotion that most Hollywood films need to attract the mainstream audience. I saw it first on Cable TV and fell in love with it from day one. I recommend it to everyone i know and they all agree it's top notch when i let them borrow it.
It's a shame the movie ends with the death of the poor girl and John Travolta further defiling her by splicing her death screams into a slasher film. It's a good film, but so unpleasant and cynical I couldn't see it again.
No, but I have been recording sounds and mixing since I was a kid, so I'm just naturally drawn to this sort of films, I think. I'm not a big fan of Brian DePalma actually, but this movie is brilliant all the way.

The voice of Nancy Allen in this movie sounds so sweet¡¡¡, and more in the end, when Travolta is about to mourn.

The scene where Travolta finds all of his tapes erased is great film making. DePalma at his best.
