  • this is the start of a very long 500 miles at indy.

  • 1995 was the last year of true Indy 500 racing, before IRL and USAC ruined it.

  • @TheCarlsonsRaiders I totally agree with you. Now let's hope with the reunification of the series and the new 2012 rules.

  • @ encinobalboa : They did have speed times...it's on part 3..:P

  • this sucks balls compared to 1995

  • Slow and Safe...Enrico I take it you want another fatality at Indy?

  • No talk of lap times or speed. IRL was slow and is still slow.

  • Junior league drivers crashing on the pace lap! And the sound of the motors is pure NASCAR.

  • Comment removed

  • That's because Nascar drivers don't "race" until the last ten laps. Especially if Nascar makes them pit every 10 laps for new, faulty tires.

  • I'm pretty sure that there was a crash before the start at Talladega a few years ago between Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson... HMM... Lets not be hypocritical here.

  • Oh really, care to share a few examples? Please do since you insist they happen every other race.

  • Here's a few examples:

1994 New Hampshire...six car pileup in turn four before the green flag

1982 Indianapolis...Kevin Cogan has a mechanical failure before the start, resulting in a five-car crash.

1992 Indianpolis...TWO single-car spins on the second parade lap.

1994 Surfer's Paradise...rain-slick track causes five-car pileup in hairpin turn on pace lap.

I was exaggerating with that "every other race" comment, but pre-race incidents seem to happen somewhat often in open-wheel.

  • And that is any different from the cronic lap 1 yellow flag how?

  • The difference is that on the pace lap, the cars are only going 40-60 miles per hour, whereas on the first scored lap, the cars are often at full speed in half of a lap or less.

  • also, i remember a spin before the 2002 Richmond Busch Race

  • @racermac1988 hey man dont worry about this idiot hes a nascar fan, he was born ignorant you do a great job uploading this stuff thanks

  • What about the 1996 U.S. 500?

Unless you were watching another race at the time...

  • The engines didn't even sound right. It was so much cooler with the loud, powerful whine of the turbo engines, coupled with the low hums of the stock-block Menard V6s.

    Those were the days.

  • Amen to that Menard V6!!!

  • yes you are right

  • Not only that the cars look VISABLY slower.

  • The field didn't even form up worth a shit on the first start atttempt. It was pathetic.

  • Yea these engines sound awful. Plus, the cars just look slow, even the current Dallara's are better.

  • I hated that engine package. It sucked when they sounded like stock cars. Indy Cars should sound like Indy Cars, not something you'd hear at a NASCAR race!

  • Agreed.

Comparing the cars of the 97 race to the ones years prior with the turbos, is like comparing ice cream to cow shit. . .

  • @boilerpip

Thank God Nissan isn't in open wheel anymore.

  • Alfonso Giaffone? Is he Felipe's brother?

  • I don't think so

  • Cousins, The are also Rubens Barrichello's cousins in law

  • cousin

  • Yes he is.

  • cousin

  • Wow the sound of these cars is just crazy..Love it, that's the way it should be!!

  • WHY ARE YOU HERE?

  • This was Bryan Howard's first year as chief starter of the International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race.
