I'm pretty sure that there was a crash before the start at Talladega a few years ago between Mark Martin and Jimmie Johnson... HMM... Lets not be hypocritical here.
The difference is that on the pace lap, the cars are only going 40-60 miles per hour, whereas on the first scored lap, the cars are often at full speed in half of a lap or less.
The engines didn't even sound right. It was so much cooler with the loud, powerful whine of the turbo engines, coupled with the low hums of the stock-block Menard V6s.
I hated that engine package. It sucked when they sounded like stock cars. Indy Cars should sound like Indy Cars, not something you'd hear at a NASCAR race!
this is the start of a very long 500 miles at indy.

1995 was the last year of true Indy 500 racing, before IRL and USAC ruined it.

@TheCarlsonsRaiders I totally agree with you. Now let's hope with the reunification of the series and the new 2012 rules.

Slow and Safe...Enrico I take it you want another fatality at Indy?
WSBT960 2 years ago
No talk of lap times or speed. IRL was slow and is still slow.

Junior league drivers crashing on the pace lap! And the sound of the motors is pure NASCAR.

Crashes before the start almost never occur in NASCAR.
NASCARfan22k 3 years ago
That's because Nascar drivers don't "race" until the last ten laps. Especially if Nascar makes them pit every 10 laps for new, faulty tires.

Yeah, but I believe that is the only occurrence in the modern era of NASCAR. (1972-present).
In IndyCar racing, crashes before the start occur every other race on average.
NASCARfan22k 3 years ago
Oh really, care to share a few examples? Please do since you insist they happen every other race.
racermac1988 3 years ago
Here's a few examples:
1994 New Hampshire...six car pileup in turn four before the green flag
1982 Indianapolis...Kevin Cogan has a mechanical failure before the start, resulting in a five-car crash.
1992 Indianpolis...TWO single-car spins on the second parade lap.
1994 Surfer's Paradise...rain-slick track causes five-car pileup in hairpin turn on pace lap.
I was exaggerating with that "every other race" comment, but pre-race incidents seem to happen somewhat often in open-wheel.

And that is any different from the cronic lap 1 yellow flag how?

Yea these engines sound awful. Plus, the cars just look slow, even the current Dallara's are better.

Agreed.
Comparing the cars of the 97 race to the ones years prior with the turbos, is like comparing ice cream to cow shit. . .
