I live in Canada and I really hope this is not legal. If they call themselves hunters that's bull shit, hunting requires skill of which they have none!!!!!
The county should have long ago allowed hunters to reduce deer numbers, instead of making tax payers pay for a program, which reduces the deer populations to a bare minimum amount in many of the areas these tactics were used. I've heard comments from local residents of some of these sites, who are glad to see the deer removed, in order for their sacred shrubbery to be protected. Why live in areas of wilderness/forest preserves locations, if you don't want the actual wildlife creatures there?
Dupage County officials that sanction the rocket propelled netting of deer, then putting a bolt through the head of the stressed animal, and claiming they are not stressed, is a bit like them telling people that they have utilized "state certified sharpshooters", to help reduce the deer herds in over populated areas. Both of which are simply ridiculous comments in my opinion, and also likely very far from the truth.
Hunting is a sport, not a decimation of all land animals. A sport involves many hours of trekking, a well placed shot (clean kill), a trophy and food.
There needs to be more done about poaching.
I believe the meat is not as good once a deer is scared. This is idiotic. Maybe the natural predators should be allowed to live. (Pack of wolves, Cougars, etc.)
I don't understand why they have to net them first.....that has to scare the hell of the deer. Why not just shoot them if there is an over population. IF you get a clean shot they die almost instantly, if not you put them down with a revolver. Netting them with some jerry rigged rocket, letting them thrash around, the walking up them and putting something to their heads just doesnt make any sense.
@TheJboogie314 The net is to capture them for something like tagging or keeping track of the population. It is very stressful on the animal which is why a rocket net usually is only used on birds.

I'm against animal cruelty but I don't take offense to this video. As people we decimated the deer's natural predators (wolves, bear, cougars) for the sake of saving domestic animals and now we have a deer population that is growing unchecked. Something has to be down to thin the herd, and there simply aren't enough people hunting them. So to animal rights activists I ask you, what would you do? How would you fix this problem? If you lay out the contraceptive in food you then run the risk of sterilizing other animals who may eat said food as contraceptives are not species specific. I'll be the only one of a few hundred to say that I'm not going to judge what's going on until I know all the facts. I do know they used rocket nets and bolt guns to take samples from the populations of cervids during the time that CWD (deer equivelant of mad cow disease) was running rampant in the Nothern US. HUGE numbers of cervids were suffering the disease and they started worrying about it spreading to cow and then humans so they did a huge cull and testing. Rocket nets are EXPENSIVE!!!

Whats also cruel is when a mountain lion attacks innocent hikers, or when a grizzly bear kills a kid while he is camping. Its those animals nature hunt, just like it is in our nature as people. false. during deer seasons the animals go through a natural rise in movement. this period is called the rut where deer, mainly bucks, will go far outside of their normal stomping grounds in search of a doe in heat. the rut causes the deer to be seen more on roads not hunting.

How do you know if the deer meat is not diseased with pesticide or mad deer disease? That is why deer birth control is the only way to reduce deer population not lethal, lethal culling does nothing because of the ecological principle called "compensatory rebound effect" and that is why they have to kill the deer year after year after year with no end in site and deer vehicle accidents continues to rise.

The narrow skull means that it is very difficult to hit the critical spot required to attain immediate death or even render the animal unconscious, and the video shows that.

Actually, hitting the critical spot is easier, since there is less room for error. the bolt destroys a larger portion of the deers' brain, which allows the bolt to hit the area even if it isn't completely on target.

I hunt with a gun and it is much less stressful to the animals then capturing it in a net and then killing it. This are one of the methods that should not be used on a deer.
i wouldnt say peacefully, but they may be shocked for a second or two, but it is quick and humane. i think the only peaceful death is through a coma or in your sleep.

When you kill a deer then more than one takes it place, there are less and less hunters in the world these days. Most people have never actually seen a farm in person, its not that hunters are incompassionate, its quiet the opposite. Contraception is out of the question with the cost alone, plus animals will always have a way of reproducing, so that will in fact cause mutation. Is that what you want? If your a vegetarian then you could never understand the enjoyment of fresh, NONCHEMICAL meat.
We can pay people to kill deer to control the herd or we can have hunters do it. You animal activists crack me up. You know more money is created by hunters to help save wild life habit then anyother method. Also in programs hunters donate the deer meat to poor family's to eat. So lets see the postive side of hunters: Poor family's get food, deer population is controlled and money is created for programs to ensure wildlife. please show me how this is a bad idea.
hunters only care about protecting these animals habitat so they can guarantee that they will be able to continues to hunt. they don't actually care about the animals (just as long as the deer stick around so they can continue their sport). also, hunters only donate meat to look good in the eyes of the public, and its also a away to get rid of the meat so they can justify killing another deer.

The county should have long ago allowed hunters to reduce deer numbers, instead of making tax payers pay for a program, which reduces the deer populations to a bare minimum amount in many of the areas these tactics were used. I've heard comments from local residents of some of these sites, who are glad to see the deer removed, in order for their sacred shrubbery to be protected. Why live in areas of wilderness/forest preserves locations, if you don't want the actual wildlife creatures there?

Hunting is a sport, not a decimation of all land animals. A sport involves many hours of trekking, a well placed shot (clean kill), a trophy and food.
There needs to be more done about poaching.

I don't understand why they have to net them first.....that has to scare the hell of the deer. Why not just shoot them if there is an over population. IF you get a clean shot they die almost instantly, if not you put them down with a revolver. Netting them with some jerry rigged rocket, letting them thrash around, the walking up them and putting something to their heads just doesnt make any sense.

I'm against animal cruelty but I don't take offense to this video. As people we decimated the deer's natural predators (wolves, bear, cougars) for the sake of saving domestic animals and now we have a deer population that is growing unchecked. Something has to be down to thin the herd, and there simply aren't enough people hunting them. So to animal rights activists I ask you, what would you do? How would you fix this problem? If you lay out the contraceptive in food you then run the risk of sterilizing other animals who may eat said food as contraceptives are not species specific. I'll be the only one of a few hundred to say that I'm not going to judge what's going on until I know all the facts. I do know they used rocket nets and bolt guns to take samples from the populations of cervids during the time that CWD (deer equivelant of mad cow disease) was running rampant in the Nothern US. HUGE numbers of cervids were suffering the disease and they started worrying about it spreading to cow and then humans so they did a huge cull and testing. Rocket nets are EXPENSIVE!!!

false. during deer seasons the animals go through a natural rise in movement. this period is called the rut where deer, mainly bucks, will go far outside of their normal stomping grounds in search of a doe in heat. the rut causes the deer to be seen more on roads not hunting.

these "killings" were done with the authoriy of the federal government in a strict management effort to keep a healthy deer herd to its carrying capacity of what land there is on the preserve, this isnt hunting which some people think it is which really confuses me????
aside from that, the meat that comes from these "killings" goes towards food banks so whats wrong with feeding the homeless?

First I am a hunter.
Clearing up a few things: this is not hunting. This is deer "population control" gone wrong. It is inhumane and a cruel. Issue more tags to the locality to solve this, if a problem does exist.
To those saying the donation of meat is a farce I'd like you to say that to the homeless of our area who are donated meat yearly. They are greatly appreciative of the hunters. I know I have volunteered at the shelter. Please do not speak of which you have not experienced.

Man that is the most inhumane thing i have seen for hunting in a long time, no wonder so many people wont eat wild meat...to have the animal stress this much before being killed makes the meat taste in credibly gamey. Not only that, it is incredibly crule and not very fair...if your going to hunt for your dinner at least try and do it humanely and not let these poor animals expect it. For a flight animal being trapped in a net would be living hell.

How do you know if the deer meat is not diseased with pesticide or mad deer disease? That is why deer birth control is the only way to reduce deer population not lethal, lethal culling does nothing because of the ecological principle called "compensatory rebound effect" and that is why they have to kill the deer year after year after year with no end in site and deer vehicle accidents continues to rise.

BFD! Sure the workers could have responded a little more quickly to the deer, but there's nothing inhumane about this. Some of you are clueless. Theres a big difference between actual hunting and what you just saw. Contraceptives have issues of their own (which is why they're not widely used). They don't always work 100%. And, if these deer had CWD or blue tongue then they needed to be culled anyways. Get real.

thugBreinstein: The captive bolt was not made for use on deer, which have very narrow skulls. It was made for use on domesticated animals such as cows and hogs in a well lighted, controlled environment, not for use at night on wild animals. Clearly the animals did suffer.
When deer and netted and bolted at night, no one can see a healthy animal from an unhealthy one.

Actually, hitting the critical spot is easier, since there is less room for error. the bolt destroys a larger portion of the deers' brain, which allows the bolt to hit the area even if it isn't completely on target.

No not at all, but we must find a way to control numbers, if you think birth control is the key then you believe in culling animals as well, as this will remove vertually everything in only a few short years, suppose we get every animal on birth control. Who pays for this? What happens when these animals not allowed to reproduce die? The whole population dies. I don't see deer wearing rubbers anytime soon, no really, it is more ethical to hunt and eliminate a few rather than starve a LOT.

When you kill a deer then more than one takes it place, there are less and less hunters in the world these days. Most people have never actually seen a farm in person, its not that hunters are incompassionate, its quiet the opposite. As for the Ohio mention, we did in fact film one of those programs, and it was not a good scene. The video is up on YouTube. For what it is worth, hunters are not a staggering majority. Their numbers have been steadily declining for years. I believe it is now below six percent.
