@AlexG8462 This was a joke, on how people take ANY movie and over analyze it. And apparently because someone loves a director you don't, when they leave, you're glad you don't have to hear it anymore? Sounds kinda dick-ish, doesn't it?
@Jman92854 Clearly you don't listen to Spill that often, because there was one podcast where Korey brings up "The Lion King" and Carlyle yelled out "FUCK THE LION KING!!!" This analysis of The Lion King is really the craziest thing I've ever heard, and not in a good way. He also thought that "The Ant Bully" was about communism. Think about how crazy that sounds.
@AlexG8462 Here's the thing, it's called a recurring joke. You do know that half the spill crew use fake names, right? In fact, you are the one who hasn't listened to them enough, because they screw up and say their real names in quite a few of their reviews. Basically, these reviewers are characters they play, but the opinions on movies are real. Do you honestly believe Korey was a security guard at a mall?
Carlyle is such a douchebag in this particular rant, but he does have a good point. There's no way in hell that the Lion King was MADE to be propaganda, but you can definitely take that message from it.
@Joeybsmooth and the black one is the evil one. Yeah its really a problem, but its easy to see why this type of thing happens. All through man's history, people of lighter skin have always been seen as "special" even among other white people. I suspect that it has to do with being seen as favored by sun gods or something like that. The fact that it is still relevant today shows how little people have grown. =/
Ok, I'm trying not to comment on what you guys are saying, but you're a fucking idiot who should pick up a dictionary. Anarchist socialist... God damn...
That is such a broken argument.... Carlyle is no better than those absurd uber-right wing politicians he is speaking out against. Just because you draw an insane correlation between this film and political agenda does not mean it exists. Points for imagination but other than that pure drivel...
Don't take it seriously. He was making fun of over analyzing films. You know, the kind of people who say that Jaws is an obvious metaphor for the Vietnam War.
I'm gonna say my peace on this: I wish people wouldn't make such a big deal out of the Lion King. Yes, it's a well-done movie and the musical is fantastic. However, I don't like it when people read so much into a Disney movie. This not only counts this communism idea that Carlyle posed, but also includes the subliminal message BS that keeps circulating around (ie "Good Teenagers...take off your clothes). Also, Carlyle sounds pretentious and condesending. Glad that Korey didn't take that tat.
This rant seems to equally describe Soviet style Communism and free market capitalism. Both of them work great on paper but end up with the privileged few shitting all over everyone else. As cliche as it sounds, the best solution probably lies somewhere in the middle
the medium is the message, and television/film is not communistic or capitalistic, it is democratic and tyrannic, it is a luxury good, a distraction of the distraction, propoganda propoganda.
I'm with carlyle on this one, only because he does show how socialism and capitalism is the same, it's just that in socialism everyone prospers, in capitilism the top prosper.
simba wasent happy living with timone and pumba, he was just running away from his problems, drowning them out, but he wasent happy. He still felt crushing guilt since he thought he caused his father's death.
@hotrod2c He seemed pretty happy, eating bugs, and singing songs, and oh, SMILING quite a few times! He only seemed guilty when people brought it up, other than that, he was perfectly fine until Nala found him.
Okay, first, those who are actually buying this are readding way too much between the lines, second, it was a joke, Carlyle clarified it on the next ACOCO and sort of apologized about it, not too sincerely mind you. He does this weird kind of jokes, he pulled a similar joke with Happy Fett on AICN, and people took it too seriously there too.
I think the fact that there is a privileged king who rules all his subjects clashes with the idea that everyone is an individual responsible for him-herself. I think the film is a capitalist propaganda in that it states that communism:bad, capitalism: greta cause we really need some rich people running the coutry and having 95% of the wealth. We don't need that; We need people to earn the amount of money they deserve and so cut down on footballers' and film stars' salaries.
the music in there was clever though and anyway let's face it? do kids know about capitalism or communism? do they give a fuck? no they just enjoy it and they dont care about some messege. the only ones you got talkin shit is adults, not the movie's intended audience.
Finally, someone who gets it. People, stop reading so much into it. It's NOT a capitalist/socialist/communist/anything-ist rant. It's just a movie. If you believe that the film holds a strong message, that's your deal. For me, personally, though, people make the biggest deal out of the Lion King and don't let it just be. I apologize if this sounds like I'm being defensive, but stop reading so much into a Disney film.
I gotta side with Korey on this one. Capitalism at its worse is individuals doing whatever they want and disregarding everyone else. The Anti-Individualist message comes from Marxism/Socialism where everyone has a roll in the collective (Circle of Life) and your personal goals and desires are set aside. Good rant though, which you can only here from ACOCO
You know what would be awesome - if there were images to go along with this. Slideshow style! Hells yeah! That Carlyle is the mother fucking man, yo! His shit is dope!
