  • I'll never forget watching this for the first time in theaters. It was physically challenging not to stand up and raise my arms like he did. Just such an incredibly captivating scene that makes you want to rejoice.

With that being said, I think this is why we all love this part of the movie so much. It gives all of us a sense of victory that justice finally prevailed.

  • it'd be so gutting if there were bars at the end of that pipe

  • dufresene: AHHH IT SMELLS LIKE A MICHEAL BAY MOVIE!!

  • alternate ending: "Andy had spent decades planning this moment, planning his dash to freedom. Unfortunately for all his planning, Andy never did anticipate that the methane gas from all that sewage would make a man pass out. And so, Andy fainted in that sewer and drowned in a river of shit."

  • 1. The largest drain pipes are 12 inches in diameter. Nowhere near large enough for a grown man to crawl through.

    2. Drain pipes don't drain into open ditches.

    3. Who fucking cares? This is still one of the best movies ever!

  • 20 year's in Shawshank wow.. and for 10 year's he was getting raped

  • All of these alternate endings being posted are killing me. Absolutely hilarious.

  • 500 yard, the same size as 3 ping pong tables. Again not so good with the math.

  • What if he got to the end and there was a grate blocking his escape. What a horrible way to die lol

  • Just finished my course work for the semester and had to watch this video.

  • my fav movie

  • alternate ending:

Morgan freeman: andy crawled through the sewers to try to escape, unfortunately he got stuck and all the sewer water filled up and he drowned in all that shit smelling fowellness

    -end movie-

  • Alternate ending:

Morgan Freeman: ''Fiiiiive houndred yards, just shy of half a mile and poor Andy found metal bars blocking the exit of the sewer''

  • greatest scene ever

  • Triumph Of The Will

  • Alternate ending...

Morgan Freeman: "Unfortunately, poor Andy died from a bacterial infection the next morning because of all the shit that he swam through."

    -End movie-

  • @Sappyspartan ahahahahahahaahahha!lmao!

  • Jag undrar hur han inte var klaustrofobisk nog att inte stanna i röret hur mår du

  • I wonder how it would feel to be locked up for years and then to FINALLY escape

  • @nerad1994 Watch the film 'Midnight Express' a true story about a man who smuggles cannabis and gets shut away in a Turkish goal for years, then escapes. Excellent film too, but don,t watch it with your granny!

  • @gillwilkinsongw alright sounds interesting thanks

  • duffrain was here

  • @duffrain it's actually spelt "dufresne."

  • I love the shot of Andy walking into the bank!

  • one of the greatest movies ever. tim robbins rocks.

  • when im about to go home after another shit day at work...THIS IS HOW i FUCKING FEEL

  • I wonder how he put the poster back on the wall to hide his escape.

  • @accursedseraphim He never takes the poster down. It's pinned at the top, but not at the bottom. Remember the scene where he's hiding under the poster while scratching the wall with the rock hammer?

  • @napmaster383 I remember now. thanks!

  • @kubrickstan1996 dude, pulp fiction sucked ass. the story was john travolta being a douche.

  • THE BEST MODERN DAY MOVIE!!

  • Andy Dufresne, the man who crawled through 500 yards of crap and came out pretty clean on the other side

  • 500 yards in a sewer pipe? No way! Toxic gasses would be higher than any oxygen in there...only mistake of the movie.

  • @stripes5150: You do know that the universe that this movie occurs within is connected with Stephen King's multiverse, so anything can happen.

  • In reality there would be a grate blocking the sewer, that would suck.

  • i rly hope that was dirt in that pipe smh,,,

  • *BOOM* lightning strikes him dead on spot. The End.

    - M. Night Shyamalan

  • I would been laughing so hard if Andy got shot at the moment raised his arms and laughed.

  • He still won't be able to get a job.

  • @musicman271896 Did you watch the fucking movie? He had what would be nearly $3,000,000 today, he doesn't need or want a job.

  • @musicman271896

Actually, he cud get a job; remember, he has a new identity; he has a new birth cert., driv lic, and had a bank acct under the new ID; he's no longer Andy Dufresne on record. But w/ all that $370k he took from the warden, he doesn't need a job. $370k n the 1960's, 70's is equal to millions today.

  • it shows determination of human being. I kind of like the end when he came out clean

  • This is a fucking great film. Sorry for the french but theres no other way of saying it.

  • Hurra för svensk text! :D

  • could you imagine getting ot the end of the pipe and it being locked with a grill over it and no way to turn around either :(

awesome movie, one of trhe best ever made

  • Actually Morgan Freeman, 500 yards is just shy of a third of a mile.

  • @Erikthegreat54321 - and it would be better to say that? Cinema dude, that's why they're there, you're here. Shy of half a mile rolls off the tongue better than of a third of a mile.

  • 500 yards is 450 metres, not 500 metres. @ 0:14

  • I still would like to know how he managed to stick the poster back up after he netered the tunnel??

  • @BarrieLFCisAMAZING

Yea man, I always wonder how he did it.. Anyway, it's just a movie.

  • this movie will always be one of the greatsest if not the greatest movie ever made. it shows compation, love and pure determination to get what you want, and that time heals all wounds.

  • Samuel L. Jackson did such a good job in this.

  • @SSJRockyRambo

    you mean morgan freeman lol

  • Why Andy chose enchilada night... we will never know.

  • @longshotluigi Good job at copying comments

  • @longshotluigi

    fail comment is fail. obviously.

  • 20 years is a Very long time.

  • about all ppl's racist comments. tear off all the skin and we're all the same fuckin thing underneath.

  • @SIMPLEman612 i knew somthing was wrong did you actually think that samuel jackson was in the shawshank redemption?

  • @SIMPLEman612 infact even look in the info box it will tell you that your a retard and that morgan freemna is in the shawshank redmeption. and you dont even understand what racism is just bacause i said that samuel jackson is in some crappy movies doesnt mean m racist or event that i think hes a bad actor. if i was being racist i would have comented on his skin colour which i wasnt doing so stop false acussing me! and can anyone reply to him and that morgan freeman is in this film!!

  • @SIMPLEman612 well its your fault for being stupid im not saying that samuel jackson was bad in those movies i was saying that thoses movies were bad and didnt you read my compliment to him he is a good actor and imbd stands for international movie database it is a site were u can look movies. type it in on google and look up shawshank redemption and i shall tell you that morgan freeman is in the film. and when ever did i say that he is a bad actor because he is black so stop false acussing me

  • @SIMPLEman612 look it up on imdb and it will show you that samuel jackson is not in the shawshank redemption. and if you think that samuel jackson doesnt deserve credit then think agian. samuel jackson can be a very good actor he has been in good films eg. pulp fiction, jackie brown, goodfellas, and bad films eg. snakes on a plane, phantom menace so you can stop calling me racist

  • @SIMPLEman612 samuel jackson isnt in this films you dick look it up anywhere or ask anyone its not samuel jackson you retarded peice of shit

  • That music is stunning! It makes that scene! Thomas Newman is a master!

  • I think Stephen Edwin King, the author of the book used for the script, has writted this story about HIS OWN wish to escape from nightmares he is writing about and has in his poor soul.

I sincerely wish his hope for release from nightmares torturing him might be fulfilled and he will finally be free of all his fears & nightmares, just like Andy Dufresne, his TRUE hero did.

  • A racist doesnt deserve a response ....you guys are feeding his appetite for attention. Just chill and enjoy your conversations he will soon loose interest and be on his lonesome way..

  • @bigfoot3270 the reason why your commnet is bullshit is that im not being racist dont you understand that im just corectin this man thinking that samuel jackson is in the shawshank redemption im 100 0/0 not racist

  • @woodywoodpecker896 OK woody that is cool(glad to hear that) and for the record Samuel Jackson wasnt in SHAwshank. So I agree with you on that but somebody was pushin some hate and racism so I"LL let you tell me who that was.

  • @bigfoot3270 oh oky some guy was saying im racist as a joke and i thought you ment me :)

  • epicness x100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

  • 500 yards of sewage isn't much when you're escaping nightly anal assaults and being caged in for the rest of your life.

  • Why he chose enchilada night nobody knows

  • @NapalmBubbbleGum lol. didn't really matter what night he chose, as long as it was stormy (to cover the sound of breaking pipe). besides, with all of that hydrogen sulfide he would have to breathe, it woulda paralyzed his lungs and killed him within the first 50 yds...so, horse apples to this overly dramatized scene

  • Not often i agree with IMDB ratings, but i have to agree that this is the best movie ever created.

  • @everyone you're just saying that because IMDB says so!

  • for me one of the best movies of all time

  • Who pressed it? Who fucking pressed the dislike button?! The fairy fucking godmother pressed it. OK, if no one fesses up then I will PT every single one of you until your assholes are sucking buttermilk!

  • @Zero2267

Sir I press it Sir! :(

  • @achmedlolol Well don't worry about it too much, people disliking videos isn't the end of the world, I was only joking. :)

  • Better get out of that water, Andy, with all that lightening...

  • I've always wondered about 2 things: 1. How did Andy know of the lightning storm? Would he bet his life on a weather report? 2. How the hell did he bang through a thick metal pipe with a piece of rock?

  • @THISNAMEOWNS

Couldn't tell ya about the weather report, but the pipe actually isn't metal. Sewage pipes of that era (and most today) are made of vitrified (hardened) clay. It's lighter and less expensive than metal, and is much better at resisting corrosion from long-term exposure to the compounds in sewage. But it is also a heck of a lot easier to break with a big ass rock. :-)

  • @THISNAMEOWNS

    1. I think a question like this is pointless, it's an amazing film, so we'll just go off yes, he saw the weather report.

    2. I think you'll find the pipe would be made of cast iron, which is very brittle as far as metal goes, it's what they used in all drainage pipes back then, if struck hard enough, it will break.

  • @THISNAMEOWNS maybe he looked out of thw window?? and its a movie so theres no points in pointing out plot holes because every movie has them even one as great as the shawshank redemption

  • @woodywoodpecker896 He couldn't have looked out the window when he took the norton's blackbook because the sky was clear then. That was a point of no return because if he couldn't escape that night, he would've been dead.

Anyways, yes, it is a powerful scene, but the director could've easily covered it by saying Andy has a knack of telling the weather or something. And they could've said that he almost carved the pipe open previously, so he only needed to hit it hard to completely open it.

  • I think that all movie is the best in history! Nowadays we get only piece of shit in compare to that.

  • I watched this film out of complete boredom... and this scene shaped my mind. This is why I always watch this half way through any test of will power because it simply says "YES"

  • One of my all time favorite movies... One of the greatest films ever made!

The scene where Andy makes it out of the prison, throws his arms in the air, rain falling down on him, the gorgeous music playing as Andy cries in happiness, is one of the greatest images in cinema, and in my top 5 favorite film scenes!

    Wow. Just wow.

  • One of the most famous scenes in movie history... amazing.

  • Wouldn't Andy have suffocated from the methane gas? I can't imagine a sewage pipe would be well ventilated.

  • A "crawl to freedom" is the true purpose of life. If you hate your job, or a certain relationship, or some other such hardship; what are YOU prepared to do in order to address the issue? If you let it beat you down, and you fail to properly confront it, you're not being true to yourself. You're a prisoner.

  • Holy Fuck. One of the most powerful scenes in all of cinema history

  • can you say pneumonia?

  • What would Andy have done if that sewer pipe was sealed off? would he crawl five hundred yards through shit smelling foulness back to prison.. will we ever know?

  • @Nintendoman15

I thought that too, but if you read the book, it tells about Andy getting hold of a map or blueprint or something of the prison, so he was pretty sure he'd get out ok.

  • @Nintendoman15

No, he would rather die trying to break the pipe, rather that return to the prison.

You're definitely playing too much of your virtual computer games, if you do not understand what true liracler STRONG WILL and BELIEFS can do.

  • @Nintendoman15 ..what kind of idiot would seal a sewer pipe ?? shawshank would have become shawwhit prison ....

  • @Nintendoman15 ..what kind of idiot would seal a sewer pipe ?? shawshank would have become shawwhit prison ....

  • @prabustreta Not seal it completely but sealed with a steal drain.

  • @Nintendoman15 Nah... he would have taken the rock that he busted the pipe with in the first place.

  • @Nintendoman15 you're are right but it's impossible or else the prison would have problem with all the shit...:D

  • @Nintendoman15 he would have used his rock hammer to scrap the sealed off sewer pipe until its clear, or he would find another wall to get out.

  • @Ghaiyst Used a blunt rock hammer to dig through a steel drainage pipe?

  • @Ghaiyst using the power of justice to teleport!

  • @Nintendoman15

it wouldn't be sealed off if it ran downstream would it

  • @Nintendoman15 Some birds aren't meant to be caged....their feathers are just too bright. Andy Dufresne is one of those...he would've found a way out of it...lol. Good point though

  • @Nintendoman15 no, he knew the specs of the prison, He was not going to fuck himself over...

  • that year, there were some great movies. winning an oscar doesnt make or break a movie, look at all the amazing independent movies that didn't win squat at the oscars. Had forrest gump came out the year before this one, morgan freeman would have the oscar he deserves for this movie.

  • The reason why this part is so moving is because its the ultimate display of achievement and success, Every little minute you put in all adds up to this. Beautifully displayed. Screw oscars.

  • 1:02 Gives me chills...

  • Half a mile? That's just wildly inaccurate by a whole 380 yards? Just shy? No wonder you people got us into economic chaos!

  • the warden disliked this video.

  • he's smart to choose a rainy day because the shit came off him because of the water ... smart guy xD

  • This was an incredible year for movies

  • mr norton the warden disliked this clip

  • lol subs say 500 meters, thas an extra 46 yards

  • This is what I did after my graduation. Took of my shirt and looked up to the rain thanking god that I was done with high school. Never going back there. I'm free.

  • @freakwave003 im about to graduate college and will be doing the same thing...

  • jippie, svensk text!

  • Tim Robbins is my old man crush :) :L

  • i replay this moment on ipod everyday....just to get a taste of what real freedom is like....

  • Svensk text :D

  • how can your heart not swell when he finally gets out of that pipe? all the humanity inside my body just wants to burst out and rejoice in tears every time i see this part

  • @kearndawgreviews1 See you're wrong there. Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump are extremely amazing movies. Shawshank, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump are by far some of the best movies ever made. I think that the Oscars were just extremely packed with amazing movies that year. I don't really know where I stand with my favorite of the three, because they're all very different movies.

But seriously, don't call any of these films crap.

  • My favorite part by far when he raises his arms and laughs. 1:04

This scene was beautifully done. Tim Robbins did fantastic, the music adds a tremendous effect, and it was just a great scene. I love this movie and I honestly think that I might like it better than Forrest Gump.

  • @oladengrymme Thank you so very much for putting this on youtube

  • 888 . u will know. This is a warning not a vision. Someone must contact me.. Otherwise I can only Open the door

  • 8 more hours

  • sidi is back

  • One of the greatest scenes in the history of motion picture

  • Sometimes I play this scene while I'm taking a crap. It adds so much effect.

  • @TheLighterDark

"That turd was 500 yards. That's the length of five football fields. Just shy of half a mile."

  • This movie is great but I just can't say Its better than forrest gump, forrest gump will always be just one tiny bit ahead of shawshank.

  • @Buddie9500 Which is why I have both movies.

  • Still number 1 on IMDB :D

  • I lost faith in the Oscars after 1994

  • @aboyousef9 funny, that's when I lost faith that kurt cobain would turn his life around :)

  • WHAT A FILM! :D

  • I just love how after 20 years of cell searches, they never once thought to look behind a poster

  • @Theriot6592 they explain that in the book.

  • @omxpablo19 no it doesn't, it basically just says that Andy got extremely lucky

  • @Theriot6592 no, it states they went extremely easy on his cell searches since he was the warden's mascot. And then, yes, luck.

  • THIS LOST TO FORREST GUMP?! I saw that like 5 times as a kid and dont remember what the hell it was about...some retarded guy running in a cornfield or something...?

  • @RobloxLegomania Now that you're older may be you should see it again and will probably understand it.

  • @kearndawgreviews1 I like Shawshank Redemption more than Pulp Fiction but that movie isn't crap at all. Forrest Gump, I really don't care for.

  • One of the flaws of the Oscars. If two brilliant movies are published the same year, only 1 gets the recognition.

  • Andy escapes to Mexico only to die from every living disease known to man from crawling through a half a mile of diarrhea...................

  • BEST MOVIE EVER!!! GET IT RIGHT

  • @HogwartsCastle,

No, but John Travolta took the nomination from him. What a joke.

  • @lupoistheman1 Ya, but they compensated and gave him best supporting actor in 2004 for Mystic River

  • One of my all time favorite movie moments. Tim Robbins is awesome!

  • It is so beautiful when Andy escapes and is standing there in the rain and laughing. It is like the rain is cleansing him of all the filth he had been exposed to and been a part of all those years in that prison, and he can't help but thank God for being free and finally being able to have hope and live as a normal human being again, things that people who are on the outside take for granted. It gives new meaning to the saying, "I'm free at last! Thank God Almighty I'm Free At Last!"
