Very nice, I'd be very interested in collaborating in one, but the problem I have is my skepticism based on (probably sounds silly) the apathy of school group-projects, where only a few people did the work and the rest of the kids said "fuck it" and sat back. Any way to combat this besides democratic action, when the apathetic are the majority in the group?
Worker Cooperatives are the way. It works, it's proven to work, and it produces a better society for all of us. Corporations in America don't even want you knowing about Worker Ownership business models, capitalists will go so far as to tell you they don't exist then call you a socialist for advocating them.
It doesn't matter, the top down business model fails, it's a system that's rigged to ensure that the rich always hold dominion over the poor, worker cooperatives work well for everyone.
I vote myself a raise & a very long long vacation, but not to be the boss & there are no goals, targets nor incentives for whatever magical company, that produces nothing.
Oh, dude, you are lost in knowing human nature & econ.
Most people can't even manage their own personal finances. If you want to "self-manage", be a freelancer or entrepreneur. I did it 7 years ago. You'll never work as hard as when you work for yourself.
The fundamental flaw in Mutualistic workplaces is, where does the initial investment come from? Who is going to 'risk' their money and capital? Who is going to pay the workers while the factory is being built? How about showing me a *real* business plan?
I describe myself as a "market anarchist" while at the same time largely in agreement with what you're presenting. It's refreshing to see a presentation of REAL socialism rather than the usual authoritarian propaganda that sometimes goes around calling itself "libertarian" or "anarchist". Ditto for the vulgar strains of "anarcho-capitalism" whose visions of the ideal society look way too much like our current one to be taken seriously. Very thought-provoking series, thanks!
Jose Maria Arizmendi, who founded Mondragon said - "To build cooperativism is not to do the opposite of capitalism, as if this system did not have any useful features .. Cooperativism must surpass it, and for this purpose must assimilate its methods and dynamism." Anyone who thinks you will create a workers paradise or utopia just need read Animal Farm. Corruption is part of human nature, however setting up laws within a free market structure is the best PROVEN way for workers to live.
If you want to address the worlds economic systems, I fail to see how you can do so without tackling the international banksters and the debt based economies they have created. Every western nation is now so indebted it's now impossible to ever pay back these loans. Manufacturing is being destroyed across the board creating mass unemployment and widespread poverty. To blame capitalism on this is absurd because the banksters are destroying manufacturing which is by its very nature Capitalism!
The point of my post below is that I've seen Co-Op's work, from a customer perspective. The workers seem happier and the customer service is amazing! I purchase almost all of my equipment from MEC ( Mountain Equipment Co-Op ). It sounds like radical idealism because dominating corporate culture embraces Frederick Winslow Taylor. Similarly, it used to be illegal to provide loans at interest ( usury laws ) yet modern society is built on debt slavery. Modern Psychology shows flaws in Taylor's ideas
Tired of having my school backpack break, due to shoddy workmanship, I walked into a Canadian store called, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, about 10 years ago. It is one of the biggest retailers of recreational sporting gear ( yet it does not advertise, relying only on "word of mouth" ). They explained that a one-time fee of $5 would grant me a lifetime share in the company. I read their pamphlet on "What is a Co-OP?" and received a "radical sounding" explanation ( like the above video ).
This was actually implemented in Russia after the collapse of USSR. The whole economy was denationalized by allowing the workers to owe an equal share of productive units. They quickly sold their shares which gave rise to oligarchs.
The question is about ability, you will always have people with unequal abilities/talents which eventually will result in an unequal wealth distribution and to cure that you will have to use the government force or not cure it or not.
@vahegharibyan Property reform and abolition of usury would fix all those problems. Who cares if the next person is a little more rich because they're more talented? It would be nothing compared to the enforced disparities of today.
Nice work---very rich in the images that go with the thoughts, and well-exampled about an alternative way to work and live that could help to take the power (our labor) back to the people who do the work. Should inspire many others to take its examples and ideas forward! I hope people give this a serious look---Seems that We are all we have now to save ourselves as working people from the world's gargantuan smiling predators.
For anyone who takes interest in this idea, I implore you to look up "La Toma" here on youtube. Its a documentary about workers takeovers in Argentina....
worker self-management? good god no, people are fucking idiots. there is a reason entrepreneurship is considered a resource in economics, an extremely valuable one at that.
So Left Libertarians are against corporations and the routine 9 - 5 work frame.
But how do Left Libertarians feel towards the whole Big Brother/Nanny state/controlling government? Because I feel the left-libertarians and "right"-libertarians are focusing on different issues (left-libs, on corporations, right libs, on the state).
@pwnage666 Generally, liberals focus on the oppressive hierarchy of the corporations, private sector, and monopolized market, while Conservatives focus on the dangers of centralized government infringing on the economic or civil (but not bodily) freedoms of its citizens. Left - libertarianism opposes both corporate tyranny and governmental centralization, while Right - libertarianism focuses only on government.
How will it be suggested that we obtain this system and how will the equality be achieved. What I mean is, say 5 people invest in a business, then add more people. Would they all split the profits evenly or would some still make more than others?
If people aren't doing their job well, either because of inability or laziness, would they be placed in a new job or would firing them be voted on and what would they be entitled to, if anything?
Unfortunately it does not address the issues of direction, so if the employees say owned Monsanto would that mean that they would be more committed to pesticides and GMO regardless of environmental issues.
This is alas not the way froward, we have not evolved to the point where we have accepted our relationship to one another as humans let along our Eco system and environment.
@Kinkspace: I actually agree with you. This is just a first step in the right direction. Remember, this is just part 2 of 3. Hopefully my next video will address some of your concerns. I think any time you have a market system, people will be forced to give up some of their own principles/ethics to feed the beast. This is the subject of my next video. Thanks for the comment.
@TheLeftLibertarian - I love this response! I'm tired of people "anti-government" and "pro-capitalism" being ignorant of what I see as basic human nature. One person said "a woman who's had a child goes back to work to pay *the government.*" It was just such a mind-numbingly stupid comment ...
@TheLeftLibertarian Your coming at it from the wrong direction, the same direction that every human has come at it from that has walked before you, so no shame there, the list is long & inclusive of some pretty impressive names.
@Kinkspace Since people in a worker cooperative would not be farming out the work, but doing the work themselves, and most likely using the products that they produce, there is no reason to believe that they would invest in poisoning themselves.
@loewinful You missed my point completely. Until perception has shifted people on the whole "believe". eg: I have no doubt that many working for Monsanto truly believe they are doing what is best for mankind. Just like the Aztec's sacrificing & poisoning their own drinking water with the bodies. As an ideology in theory of course it works, as does communism & democracy, in theory. Theories all you like, the reality is somewhat removed from the theory though.
@Kinkspace You missed my point. We're talking about a worker cooperative, correct? So chances are they will be working around and consuming their own product. They are not ancient Aztecs, but modern humans and know better than to poison themselves.
@loewinful I understood exactly what you meant. You however have not understood me, I obviously did not explain it well enough. You are preaching an ideology, there are many workable ideologies, in an ideal world. You have not dealt with the fact that we do not have an ideal world nor will we have if people like yourself keep missing my point with regards to perception. All that will happen until such time is you will campaign, others will campaign for something else & never the twain shall meet
@loewinful In short great idea but you are not seeing let alone understanding the real problems & issues.
You do not know how to get from point a) to point b) which is what you think you have the map for, still no idea of the territory either at point b) or on rout, as a result perception of the territory you think accompanies point a is illusion.
@loewinful In short you will never get everyone to agree one ideology. That is totalitarianism. To you & I what you have presented might seem idyllic, to others not.
The ideology is of no consequence. Each t their own. What has to be perceived & agreed first are the basic Rights of Man by the entire population of the planet. The right to think, be & express with a commitment of personal & collective responsibility, in short recognizing no one persons rights take precedent over the next.
@loewinful Only then will Panocracy work & people can chose how they want to live, do not be offended if some hate your dream, as at such a point in time the ego that drives one-true-way-ism will be understood & put to far better use.
@TheElMoIsEviL Saab, swedish car makers, actualy made an effort towards this in the 80's under the last big economic crisis and they managed, without empolying ANY extra workers and without overworking the ones they already had, to increase productivity by almost 20%.
Thereby cutting the prices on their cars and staying in bussines so no one got fired. Not one!
Excellent, 5 stars. More people need to watch these videos though. I don't see these videos as mere opinions but rather see the facts and statistics that can be shown by what you are presenting. The world needs to think more like this in order to fix our economy and also the average citizens life altogether.
I received a PM from one of my watchers asking me if I deleted one of his comments. I do not delete comments and never have. For transparency, this was his message, ""Instant one star at 40 seconds in. I'm disappointed."
@TheLeftLibertarian Mark courteously fielded my question concerning comment deletion, and has gone above and beyond in accommodating my dissent! It turns out the curtness of the remark I made was due to a misunderstanding I was having with Mark's position. Apologies and cheers! : )

We have been working towards not working for thousands of years when will we realize this and embrace it?
Technology will continue to eliminate the worker what will we do with all these people?
i find it funny how capitalists are always saying that the reason capitalism is the best because it rewards people according to their labor, but that concept doesnt apply to the wage-workers (the majority of the population)
if only 1/3 of your caloric intake is composed of fats, I dont think its possible to eat much fast food if any. props, im on a similar diet. one thing I noticed is how good everything started to taste after I got off pre-processed foods, and how bad processed foods taste. did you experience this too?
In the absense of goverment how can you avoid that "tipical" enterprise appears. If someone offers some people a wage to work for him and they voluntarely accept, who is going to stop them?
Also, how can you avoid the politization, demagogy and favour buying that allways appears under democracy. I mean, isnt democracy political darwinism? Where the more politically skillfull allways prevail?
For this type of economic arrangements society would need to go through serious cultural changes. It would be pretty similar
to abolition of chattel slavery(i.e. wage work would become immoral). The same question can be asked: What if someone want to sell them selves into slavery? TLL already answered the question of self-ownership in his: ''Work Sucks'' if you are interested.
Search:''The employment contract: Achilles heel of the capitalism?''
Another excellent video - I'm always excited to see you put out another, and I eagerly anticipate the next videos; this is a subject in which I'm very interested.
I like the way you point out that worker's self-management is actually maximizing self-interested, because the worker's have a more direct stake in the outcome of their labors.
I agree with this video with the one exception of rivalries being eliminated. I don't think that would happen since there would be pressure from productive workers towards lesser productive workers. I could see many scenarios where type A personality workers would form a click and bully other workers. That's not a reason for it not to happen. It's still a million times better then what we have, but I think there would be many unforeseen problems like that one.
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson probably speaks for many mayors when he says: In these tough economic times, our cities need not only good jobs, but ways for working people to build up their family assets and wealth. Why shouldnt all of our citizens have access to meaningful jobs in workplaces where they can own a piece of the company and participate in the companys direction?
That's tautology, since utopia literaly means "no place". Human nature is a term that's used by people who say humans are inherently:
selfish, altruistic, violent, peacefull, dumb, smart, abusive, cooperative, full of lust, full of love, etc.
What he is describing is not an impossible Utopia, it's simply a vision on how to improve that which is wrong in our society. If anything, human nature means we're flexible and capable of adapting and change.
@mparker18311 I'm always very skeptical when people start attributing things to "human nature." Simply because we have often acted in a inequitable and immoral fashion does not necessarily mean we are endowed to do so. I don't believe there is anything in us that necessitates human beings acting toward each other in the cruel, inequitable, and inhumane ways we see today - except that at every turn we model our behavior off an inequitable and dehumanizing interaction with the state.
@mparker18311: Thanks for the comment. I do not understand why you call something that exist today all around the world and clearly works a utopia. I do agree that it is in our human nature to abuse people below us. After all, we see it everyday. However, it is also human nature to not want to be abused.
This is correct, in fact here in Britain the Co-Operative group is one of the most successful firms we have and it's been going since 1844. Workers Co-ops work. Period.
@mparker18311 ''Human Nature''there is no such thing as human nature.we're all cultivated by our environment. We're not Born with Bigotry and Prejudice it is instill in us by our parents, the media our culture etc.
@binslick The lie you were told by your culture isn't what you state. The lies we're told by our culture is that science is politically correct. It is not. Reality is much more scarier than people sheltered by culture can imagine.
@mparker18311 I totally agree with Jacque that Aberrant Behavior is shaped by Environment. There is no other way to explain human behavior.i dont believe in that human nature bullshit.
@binslick I agree, our cultures are influenced by our environment, specifically our geographic environment. At least that's the case for now. My cosmopolitan view was influenced by the virtual environment in which I spend most of my time. I would like to suggest studying sociobiology & history of mental illnesses in families. Environment shapes much of who we are, but we were born with a genetic template of limitations. You cannot choose your body type, penis size, brain size, eye color, etc.

considering about how to create a system worker cooperatives in our current society, it would be pretty tough...
the biggest problem is capital.
because the owners are the workers, then there can be no stock holders, making it hard to expand the system beyond what the workers can do...
lots of cooperatives (like in The Take) they take over the business, meaning they didnt actually start it...

How much work would a person end up working in a Anarchist society. If anyone can give a guess on what type of work hours would be a good goal.

if only 1/3 of your caloric intake is composed of fats, I dont think its possible to eat much fast food if any. props, im on a similar diet. one thing I noticed is how good everything started to taste after I got off pre-processed foods, and how bad processed foods taste. did you experience this too?

6:13 Oh, and you should have mentioned that during the three years of anarchist spain, literacy rate boomed from 3% to nearly 100%. Outstanding.

In my infancy, I never understood nor liked the movie 'Fight Club', up until I moved to america, and entered the labor force.
It was then when I realized how much meaning this movie had in reality. Excellent video 5 stars *****

I have some questions:
In the absense of goverment how can you avoid that "tipical" enterprise appears. If someone offers some people a wage to work for him and they voluntarely accept, who is going to stop them?
Also, how can you avoid the politization, demagogy and favour buying that allways appears under democracy. I mean, isnt democracy political darwinism? Where the more politically skillfull allways prevail?
Thanks in advance

Can I answer? Yes? Ok :)
Hope that helps :)

"Utopias never exist"
That's tautology, since utopia literaly means "no place". Human nature is a term that's used by people who say humans are inherently:
selfish, altruistic, violent, peacefull, dumb, smart, abusive, cooperative, full of lust, full of love, etc.
What he is describing is not an impossible Utopia, it's simply a vision on how to improve that which is wrong in our society. If anything, human nature means we're flexible and capable of adapting and change.

during this revolution, the work place is definitely one of the things that is going to change.

Utopias will never exist, it's in our human nature to crave abusing those below us.
mparker18311 2 years ago
Utopias never exist, except when they do :)
organdva 2 years ago
I hope you're right, I'd love for this to become reality. I'm just highly skeptical.
mparker18311 2 years ago
@mparker18311 I'm always very skeptical when people start attributing things to "human nature." Simply because we have often acted in a inequitable and immoral fashion does not necessarily mean we are endowed to do so. I don't believe there is anything in us that necessitates human beings acting toward each other in the cruel, inequitable, and inhumane ways we see today - except that at every turn we model our behavior off an inequitable and dehumanizing interaction with the state.
landfillpoet 2 years ago
The drive to dominate is not necessarily human nature, but it's the logic of civilisation.
yeahwotevaman 2 years ago
@mparker18311: Thanks for the comment. I do not understand why you call something that exist today all around the world and clearly works a utopia. I do agree that it is in our human nature to abuse people below us. After all, we see it everyday. However, it is also human nature to not want to be abused.

@TheLeftLibertarian
This is correct, in fact here in Britain the Co-Operative group is one of the most successful firms we have and it's been going since 1844. Workers Co-ops work. Period.

@mparker18311 ''Human Nature''there is no such thing as human nature.we're all cultivated by our environment. We're not Born with Bigotry and Prejudice it is instill in us by our parents, the media our culture etc.
binslick 1 year ago
@binslick The lie you were told by your culture isn't what you state. The lies we're told by our culture is that science is politically correct. It is not. Reality is much more scarier than people sheltered by culture can imagine.
mparker18311 1 year ago
@mparker18311 I totally agree with Jacque that Aberrant Behavior is shaped by Environment. There is no other way to explain human behavior.i dont believe in that human nature bullshit.
binslick 1 year ago
@binslick I agree, our cultures are influenced by our environment, specifically our geographic environment. At least that's the case for now. My cosmopolitan view was influenced by the virtual environment in which I spend most of my time. I would like to suggest studying sociobiology & history of mental illnesses in families. Environment shapes much of who we are, but we were born with a genetic template of limitations. You cannot choose your body type, penis size, brain size, eye color, etc.
