I just watched this movie in my film class and really enjoyed it. Can anyone explain the thing about the pies to me though? In the beginning of the movie it showed that Ralph had hidden a slice of pie from Officer Wood and there were a few more references like that throughout the movie. I don't understand what that was all about.
@LoonyBird27 I came here wondering the same thing. At the end of this scene there almost seems to be a sexual reference but it doesn't completely fit in.
Spent a couple days in Sparta in May '07. It was pretty cool to drive by the train depot at night.Found out that the diner in this scene WAS near Belleville, about 20 mi.away.Torn down many years ago.
ralph is sexy

Warren Oates (the deputy in this scene) did a great job when he played John Dilinger in the movie version of the infamous bank robber.

Downright gritty. I never get tired of seeing this move. Rather realistic portrayal of life in the South.
