Of course no alcohol added. You look very pretty! Greetings from Canada.

  • Maangchi, I just had this this past weekend in a Korean BBQ place. We love It!! Gosh! My friends and I we started to hunt for it at a Korean Super Market in LA. My friend bought the Can one. • Maangchi is there any thing you can do with the leftover malt powder? or is it useless

  • is this the same as achim haetsal?

  • @sangpenari16 noo achim haetsal is probably made with different kinds of 'grain' powder(its 미숫가루..by the way) and this is only made with rice.. nothing else..

  • what rice should we use?

  • @mariaShana113 short grain rice (sushi rice)

  • it look hard to do and i never seen it before oO but it look delicious

  • I just made this yesterday!!!

  • @bobbaT281 Thank you so much!

  • Wow so unique... love it.

  • This sounds so delicious. Does it tastes like Horlicks, anyone?

  • Thank you for your recipe. I made it just now. It's so delicious even it is not fermented yet. LOL

I made sikhye last time (using another recipe) but it didn't turn out well -- the drink tasted like it's spoiled...sour w/no taste.

Maangchi, can we cook the rice in the rice cooker instead ?

  • yes, you can use the rice cooker to make rice, but use less water than usual rice.

  • ne halmonee ga eega many manduthuse

  • i love shikhye!!

  • tx,

  • maangchi. ive been wondering. would it b ok to cook the rice in the rice cooker. and after its done. put the soup thing in the rice cooker?? wouldnt that be faster?? or would that make the soup thing go bad?

  • of course you can do that.

  • somebody tell me what this taste like! i wanna know T_T

  • Mellow and sweet. Delicious.

  • I had some this morning, but I finished it all, so now I have none ㅠ.ㅠ

  • i just made this.. it's sure time consuming!

i wonder if i've got the taste right.. but it's certainly refreshing, and it smells like watermelon rind to me!

  • cool!!!!

  • You should make Gamju/Dansul. The alcoholic version of this :)

  • Wow I had some once :) I call it rice punch

  • thank you for posting this video! i first had sikhye at my Korean friend's house and I loved it x] i've been looking for the recipe since but couldn't find it ^^

  • wow~

It's a bit different from what my mom used to make me.

    she doesn't seperate the rice

but I can see that the rice will be more fresh with your recipe.

    Thanks

I learn from you a lot these days.

    Thank you again : )

  • same my mum just leaves the rice in

  • I love Korean foods best because I'm KOrean.. I used to grow up with Korean foods. But, Korean foods are to difficult and take too much time to make....

  • I agree with you. Some dishes take long time! I hope my recipe is easy for you to follow. I love other dishes from different cultures, too.

  • HELLO. i couldnt find the malt powder anywhere! Singapore doesnt sell it i think! But when i tried asking the sales person, she asked me to buy the germinating barley. Is it the same! PLEASE HELP ):

  • check the ingredient section and "where to find the topic Korean ingredients"on the forum on my website. You willl get information what you are looking for including the photo of the barley malt powder.

  • how long can this drink be kept? a few weeks?

  • I think it should be eaten in a week. It will still be fermenting in the fridge, so its taste may turn sour if you keep it in the fridge too long.

  • Maangchi sunsaengnim, you sound like my aunt! XD The accent is incredible!!!

  • lol, My accent reminded of your aunt? nice!

  • haha, i love her accent!

  • I read so much about it Maangchi! Voila, you got it in video...thank you so much. I will try to make it. I tasted once a store bought version which is in pep bottle. I bet homemade is far much better. Now , I need to find a korean shop to get the barley malt.

  • yeah, ask for "yeot girum garu" at a korean store. Good luck with making shikhye!

  • 감사합니다!~ 우리 어머니하고 식혜 만들었어요. 너무 맛있어요!~

  • oh my! I'm so happy to hear that!

  • yes finally it's here love the drink store bought's ok but homemade is the best thanks alot you r the best

  • Wow, this is a lot of science. You are a pro, Chef Maangchi!

  • I love your recipe for this traditional drink.

The ladies at my old church group made the same thing only they dont use the long process as you do. They just use the Pohri Cha and add honey and rice. lol

  • I tried to make shikhye today. The colour turned up a bit brownish (like tea colour. just wondering why? but i still like the taste though..very refreshing!

  • That's very good color which has strong flavor.. You can add more water and sugar, and boil to dilute it.

  • Looks like it takes a lot of patience to make this..... all the soaking, draining, rinsing, fermenting, boiling, and refrigerating.

  • my mom just made this xD

  • wow. u rock!

  • My ex-mother-in-law made me make this using barley sprouts, God I hated her.

  • She must have been harsh to you! : )

  • I think so too! I found Korean cuisine takes such a long time to prepare, it's difficult to deal with if you're working full time... she ruined my marriage.

  • Every time I watch Maangchi I get very very hungry.

    It's a good thing! :)

  • aw, how sweet of u to get up in the middle of the night to continue filming this video. great job! love icy cold dessert! =]

  • omg thank youuu. i've been waiting for this video.

  • nice!

  • is this the same drink they sell on bath houses? i think i remember my friend telling me it's called rice punch or something... if this is the same thing, it's really really helpful when you're sweating... it kinda brings back the freshness to the body while you're burning inside the sauna! lol...

thanks for the recipe maangchi! i'll try making this next summer! any plans on sharing the 불딱 recipe? ^_^

  • I think the rice punch you had is sikye. Sure buldak (spicy chicken dish) is already included in the list of my upcoming video recipes. Thanks!

    i really love this drink

    you rock!!

  • This is great to drink during summer. It's sweet yet refreshing.

  • Been looking for this, love this dessert...always wonder how to make it. Thanks for the recipe and all the others. ^_^

  • I wanted to know if you can put cinamon on the sikhye to make it taste like horchata?

  • no cinamon in sikhye please. : )

  • Awesome, awesome song, lol. And the recipe looks really great, like always!

  • I had this drink at a friends wedding. It was so refreshing since it was so hot that day. Also my boyfriend loves nooroonji, especially with butter and a touch of salt.

  • you should make yakshik maangchi!!

  • This is way too advanced cooking. Have any easier way to do it? Thanks

  • Yeah, it takes too long time. But the recipe is actually very easy.

  • What's advanced about it?

  • SHIKYE!!! :P I <3 this drink! SOO much better than soda and american drinks! minus boba drinks. but i did not know what 'nooroonji' was and had to ask my mom lol

  • Thanks again for sharing your talent ! I love this rice drink !

  • Wow Maangchi - you are awesome. I am now dating a Korean guy and try to learn Korean and their culture. Your receipes are awesome! At least I know what I am eating in the Korean restaurant and can impress him with my modified American Chinese and Lorean cooking!

  • :D Handy and delicious for hot summers!
