I think you play Gershwin's work with a lot of vigor and life with very nice technique, and that is just wonderful! My own personal suggestion, if you wish to better your performance, would be quite simple; where there is a rhythmic decay at the end of phrases (many times they are transitions), take your time and slow down (manytimes just a tich)--as the music does rhythmically. ie: Mvt. #1: :31 (would be subtle here), 1:07 quite a bit as you sit on a nicely prepared V7. Great Post!!!
@xSmileForrMe So you're a girl? ;) ;) haha jokes :D Wow cello? I wish I could learn Cello.. I've taught myself basics of Violin.. but I'd love to play Cello :D Haha sorry I just got interested in the comment
@TheRocketRedUSA dude . nobody cares that you're 14 . stop trying to brag . honestly , that's not even that amazing . i played this at age 12 (2 years ago) and i have smaller hands because i'm a girl . herpaderp .
WOW! I love this! AWESOME work! I haven't played the first Prelude in years...I should really get back into it so I can sound like that! :) (I do agree that it could've gone a little bit slower at some parts so that each note is heard.)
OMG THIRD MOVEMENT WHAT WAS THAT?!?! Omg that's amazing. Yeah you basically changed the piece LOL but I LIKE IT :D:D:D I wish that was the real song D;
@Ragtime44Films he added various repeats and such in the third prelude but other than that i think its pretty much the same(aside from the ridiculously slow rate he played the 2nd prelude but thats fairly common these days)
I learned the first two a while ago and I'm just getting around to starting the third. It's very similar to the first prelude in structure. About the tempo in the second, I personally like it slower. It's a completely different song when it's played slowly. I usually keep in mind that no composer was perfect, and then switch up what I want to. The tempo was one of the changes I chose to make. I guess it just depends on how you interpret the song. You played everything very well!
True, the three were somewhat sloppily played, probably due to nerves. However, the guy has some really great alternative chords and runs, especially in the third prelude. I think even George would approve of this player's changes.
@mees04101993 Many twits eventually grow out of their immaturity. Maybe it will happen to you! In the meantime, if you have nothing to say, just--don't!
I actually just finished learning the first prelude. The first prelude in this performance is really sloppy, probably because there's not much dynamics and too much pedal (and this also goes for the whole performance all together. The 2nd prelude, should have at least a tiny bit of a swing feel but it doesn't at all, and the 3rd prelude has an interesting interpretation in this performance, but it sounds sloppy and waaayyyyy too fast.
Wow! I'm playing the first prelude for a recital in about five days and watching that really inspired me but at the same time made me worry. This is such an easy piece to screw up, but let's hope not!
decrease the time just a little before the second riff and the start of the piece 0:10 - 0:12, perhaps make it 1.5 seconds or even less, minor detail, but you want it to have a jazz feel but not to moderate and layed back- i like this performance. you want to put a sense of tension into every phrase (in my opinion), as for the second mov. i would decrease overall volume just a little, but your phrases are great.
not to be racist or anything but i take lessons at the colburn school here in california and im like the only american kid. lol only four others are american. nearly everyone there is asian...and they're great players and all, alot better than me by far, and that you know the figure of classical music right now is asian pianists, which is fine and all, but when it comes down to composers, us americans own it.
Might have some fast fingers and the requisite histrionics, but this guy left the dynamic changes completely out. The repeated 16th notes should are marked ppp. They are played the same as every other note. Kid is talented, will mature in time...for now, I'll pick someone else to listen to.
cheapmoms, if you think the second prelude was too fast, then listen to Gershwin's own recording. He zooms through it. It was a later editorial decision to make this 'rubato,' not the composer's.
im not a trained pianist like a lot of you fine people are, but hearing this played by this guy is awsome. I wish i could hear this live (i.e someone played it in front of me) Except for the second tune (is good if your in the mood, otherwise a bit boring) it is amazing in every way.
1st was fine speed wise, 2nd was too fast, 3rd had no musicality, and none of them were very clear or close to being jazzy. There is no rythmic pulse in any of the pieces because he uses rubato too liberally. Granted, it works fine with romantic music, but with Gershwin it too much of it undermines the quality of music. Interesting spin on the pieces though...
Best 3 preludes I've ever heard, outside of the Heifetz-Horiwitz CD (violin version). If there's any mistakes they're not even noticable. Very professional.
Ok, now I'm playing this preludes. Your tecnique it's great, but you've too many mistakes and I can't hear all the notes. The dinamic it's not there. You must feel more the music...
Kudos for #3... woof! The following is just my personal opinion on 1 and 2. ... #1 is not in desperate need of tempo - it needs sonorities, dynamics, nuance... #2 was the same kind of thing.. i don't know at what level of study you are, but you sound pretty good.. Simply put.. #3 was VERY VERY GOOD.. #1 and #2 are not nearly as good as what you are capable of... lose some tempo and give us some sound, eh?
well I'd say (like others cuz its true) There's some good technique in your playing but it is lacking dynamics and would cause some blandness in the preludes. Other than that, the hair...please...just...do something else better next time.
unfortunately I agree with this person. I love the Gershwin preludes which I first learned ~7 years ago and still constantly play, esp. #1 (my personal fav). The 1st piece was rushed thru so fast it was almost thoughtless; I really didn't hear the feelings which should have been there. You should have slowed everything down at least 3 times & let some of the right hand chords echo instead of rushing on to the next note as if someone was chasing you.
This is very strong, the best piano version I've heard so far. You must be professional. Who are you? I'm trying to learn the 3rd prelude first, I know I'll be able to play all the notes, but it's hard to make it convincing. Hopefully I'll be able to post a video response to this!
wow your really good!!! i've been playing for 8 years and my teacher just gave me the first prelude and i can play some of it but lots of practice!!! and i have to get it up to speed but u did wonderful!!
i thought the ad-ins were a nice touch, i agree about the second prelude speed too, this was a fabulous recording and really a pleasure to listen to, i am struggling with the third prelude right now, if you get a chance could you listen to it? it's posted on my profile, it was kinda an off the cuff recording with no warm up, but i would still appreciate it if you could give me any suggestions in the playing...
wow, i loved it all, but especially the 3rd prelude...Did you add in all of that extra stuff? or maybe i just have a different version of the piece...either way, it was amazing! And i'm sure you get this often, but how long have you been playing the piano?
and also, i thought that added gliss was absolutely awesome
Nice playing...You played the first movement how it should be, with strict tempo. I don't like it when people slow down parts except right before the climax. You did speed up the triplets but I kind of liked that. People forget the jazz element in this peice.
Yes I am... I also agree with your comment on the tempo of the second prelude. On my copy it says 88 bpm. I hear people playing it around 60 bpm and also playing it straight!!! ughhhh... it is a blues!
Yes, It's Blues! And '88 bpm' is Gershwin's suggestion. The 2nd prelude, I like Oscar Levant's performance. He was Gershwin's friend! Is Levant famous in U.S.A.?
@Y2P1973 Levant is so forgotten that its really painful. He's remembered more for his on screen entertaining than his piano playing. He was such a gifted pianist.
wow that last one is pretty cool. Question is can i be bothered to learn it.

Not the best, but not the worst. What he lacks in musicality he makes up for in technique and speed. Which is not a fair trade.

Thank you for your comment.
I think Gershwin played the piano with a little of pedal. So, his music is very rhythmical. I also performed while noting it.
And, the 2nd prelude is not slow. This song is ''Andante'', not ''Adagio''.
After that... Let's practice long time !! :)
