Her boss was a bit of a lunatic. He thought the desk was a member of his family (as illustrated by the scene with the drums) and so he fired her when she sold it. The reason why she hallucinates shirtless guy is bc she wants someone to care about her and the fact that she's talking into a GameBoy so bad.

So far, I've read through around 40 pages of comments and this is what I have gathered:

The part where Mary Sue gets fired is a flashback. After getting fired, she(he?) went crazy and began repeating the phone conversation into a gameboy. There are also metaphors about technology and iPhones there.  The shirtless guy is a hallucination. I'm confused about when (s)he's holding the paper with her voicemail written on it because her hands look like they've been flipped or something.
