So the point is, theyre not exactly known for being the smartest pair. love blinds, I guess?

Well if you noticed when that wave splashed on Mercutio, he could have died by hitting on those rocks, but instead the wave splashed on him. Later he returns in the end alive and well, so that means that possibly the powers of the ocean didn't kill him but instead saved him and he possibly fainted.
