La música fue compuesta por el compositor peruano Daniel Alomía Robles en 1913 (registrada legalmente en 1933) y la letra, posteriormente, por Julio de La Paz (seudónimo de Julio Baudouin). En el Perú fue declarada Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación en el año 2004. Érróneamente se pensaba que era de Paul Simon por haber hecho un cover con dicha melodía :)
