You wanna know what I really, REALLY hate; Somebody has a rare record and they use the speaker-to-mike method of recording! It sounds like the singer is in a tin can! It's childish/amateurish and oughta be outlawed!
Can someone please help MotownMaster clean this song up and repost? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate this upload, but we all know it can be improved...If MowtaownMaster is in the SF Bay Area, I volunteer!
I bought most of Mary's records brand new. Bye Bye Baby was awesome, some unknown gritty r&b girl on some unknown label. This song also was great, but this wasn't mainstream AM radio play. It wasn't until Smokey wrote and produced for her did you hear her constantly on the radio. If I have my people right, Mary wrote Bye Bye Baby for Jackie Wilson (who she knew), who Berry wrote and produced for. Berry kept it for his start-up label...MOTOWN, the next release after Shop Around, in Dec 60.
Mary Wells was Motowns first major R&B superstar with 10 straight top ten soul classics in a row. Amazingly every single released from the beginning of her career until the end of Motown reign was a top ten soul classic. Not even Smokey and Miracles had that track record. 12 top ten R&B singles in a row, but only 4 became major top ten pop hits. Motown had to wait until The Supremes got it together to create the company's first Pop Superstars. Mary's contribution is underrated today, but...
...it does not. The "non map" label must have led someone to think it was a "boot" or re-release, cause I got a mint copy at a record resale shop for $3.50. If "Penny" hadn't of written her name on the back of the jacket in indelible marker, it would have been virginal! Outside of being the first LP, the stuff on it is pretty lackluster, except to hardcore Mary Wells fans. My favorite tune on that LP is "bye bye baby"
This was the first of 12 Top 40 pop singles Mary Wells scored in her long career (1959-1990) reaching #33 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the first sight of things to come for the original queen of pop of the early 1960s.
Early classic "I Don't Want To Take A Chance" show Mary Wells was a true Diva and the original "Queen Of Motown" whose lifetime output is totally awesome with overlooked masterpieces like "In & Out Of Love" along the way...Bravo Mary and you are missed!!!
This was the only LP that had no map on the label. The map was not introduced until late 1961 and then 1964 with a much better map label. The map label hasn't changed until the late 80's or early 90's when Motown stopped producing mass vinyl.
