Mark, I sometimes think you and I are the only ones who liked this version of Defender. I loved this as a kid and still do. It always made more sense to me that the aliens were plucking people from city buildings and not just from some see-through mountains.
@aIteredbeast It's awesome, it's a cult classic, and i have no clue why anyone CANT love this game, its such a classic.... and you can go home and play your xbox young man.
@DiabloArcade you ever played stargate/defender II? if you have then you will know there was no excuse for such a poor pile of crap, just the same as when you compare pacman to miss pacman. i respect your opinion, like everyone deserves an opinion, just as much as i respect all the little kids who think justin beiber is some king, but thats where it ends. we were ripped off and there is no fcking excuse !!!!
at 5:10 was that a smart bomb i have the same game on the same console and never figuered out how to use a one of them but ant way the game is one of the best old games i have ever played even know it is not the best version of it
There is a glitch with this games if you want to clear the screen like the smart bombs do but you don't want to use them up fly to the top keep pressing up til you vanish then hit your fire button it acts like a bomb but doesn't use them up
Yeah, everyone asks that question, even in Grimlins 2. I'd imagine it would be somewhere around 6:00, when the sun rises, or just their opinion of the begging of the day.
I am glad you mentioned the cartridge art. I always loved ATARI's early artwork. Especially on games like Missle Command and Berzerk. I felt like I was drawn into a scifi world of wonder.
Having watched both reviews, it really is amazing how much more advanced the ColecoVision Defender is than this. Powerful hulking behemoth, that Coleco.
Plus vector graphics are just awesome. Still, people didn't warm to them much at the time, for reasons beyond me. I hope 8th generation systems bring back the classic lines and black backgrounds of old.
I think that the N64, Saturn & PS1 compliment eachother nicely, in that they all have enough exclusives to warrant having all three. Still, Sega were the real victims of Playstation. Without Sony, Sega may have had a rather balanced competition with Nintendo like with the Mega Drive versus SNES. Alas, 'twas not to be...
Know something I always loved about the 2600? The art on the game boxes!
Games like Defender, Asteroids, Missile Command, Berzerk, and of course Yar's Revenge are good examples.
You pick up one of those and look at the box cover (or the cartridge label) and it just makes you want to play it, without even turning the box over to read the game description.
The games may have been blocks and bleeps, but the packaging (and often the instruction manuals) were high quality.
@Skyrift how about night driver? when I was 6 years old, I MADE my mom buy me that game just because the box looked SO cool. But of course, the game totally blows LOL
I believe the Atari 2600 was only capable of displaying 6 sprites at a time which is why when your ship is firing your ship goes invisible.
This is why the release of Atari Video Chess was so delayed. I think they got around the limitation by using vetian blinds where a sprite is made up of horizontal lines.
I found though that Stargate aka Defender 2 was a much harder game.
Defender was a great game for the 2600. What I liked about playing defender is when you rescue a human they won't pick up another human unless you landed it safely. I'll tell you a game that really stunk for the 2600 and that was ET.
This version was so much easier than the arcade version because the shots went through all the aliens when they were lined up, where the arcade version would take out only one at a time
i've made a whole playlist of your atari reviews, and i'm gonna wacth them all, i'm already starting to fall asleep though, hehehe, i'm gonna fall asleep watchin g all these!
ROCK ON!!!!!
P.S. THE AUDIO PREVIEW SAID I'M GONNA FALL ASSHOLE...INSTERAD OF "{I'M GONNA FALL ASLEEP!
One time my uncle and I played this in two player mode all night long until finally the game froze, and we found the cartridge was very hot to the touch! The good ol days...heh.
my brother played this game back in 1980 at putt putt game things a 5 cent token game for 4 games and played for 5 hours straight and bet the computer over and over blisters on hes fingers a classic
Defender and Missile Command were our favorite "later" 2600 games amonst my friends and I. I swear we'd stay up til morning just to see Shawn turn over the score for Missile Command.
The arcade version was the best game on the planet and i played it for hours on end. When i was at college i played Defender for 5hrs and it cost me the grand sum of 10p..ohh my miss-spent childhood.Your videos are great by the way and thanks for posting..
I had Defender for the 2600 as a kid, in fact I had two copies. But for some reason, I don't think either of mine looked like yours. I think the sky was blue in mine, and not black. Maybe both of mine where a different version of Defender, or maybe my memory is completely wrong and I'm lying to myself. Either way, I liked Defender 2 a lot better for the 2600, and spent a lot of time playing that game.
I would use my smart bombs by going to the top of the screen and holding up and pressing the button. At the end there you were sounding like Irate Gamer lol. BREAKFAST IS RUINED!
Yea I have two copies of this actually. I played it back in the day, it wasn't one of my top favorites on the system, but it definitely was a iconic game for the system anyway.
The only other thing about this game that I don't care for is the fact that your ship disapears after each time you fire, making it somewhat difficult to track your ship on the screen when you are continuously firing. But considering it's a 4k game, it made a decent translation over to the 2600. Defender II-Stargate was much better, as it was a 16K game, I believe.
Now, Defender, the breakfast cereal... I would say it's never too late for them to market that!

Tryzon 2 years ago
It was a Next Gen console of the time.
The Atari 2600, Fairchild F, Magnavox 2, all these were in the prior generation.
The 5200 and ColecoVision duked it out and in part ran the show until the NES took over.
dougd1015 2 years ago
I'm aware of its technically being a step above earlier systems, but it remains a 2nd generation console technically.
Tryzon 2 years ago
Really?
Well that's interesting, I coulda' swore otherwise but I guess you learn something new everyday huh?
And of you really wanna explore those terms, the Vectrex was by FAR technically superior.
dougd1015 2 years ago
Plus vector graphics are just awesome. Still, people didn't warm to them much at the time, for reasons beyond me. I hope 8th generation systems bring back the classic lines and black backgrounds of old.
Tryzon 2 years ago
Yeah, its unfortunate.
For some reason all the consoles that had really superior quality to that of the NES, SNES, and N64 were all stepped on and spat out by the market.
Actually the PSX did to a small degree hand Nintendo its own rear side.
