Much of the higher overtones in the voice are lost in remastering. I had no idea how much until I heard the original, untouched recording of 1913; it blew me away.
@FractalBob Yes, absolutely. A lot of the original overtones have been lost in the remastering. The original recording with all its needle noise is much much better, but even here much of his voice was lost due to the poor recording technique.
You 'dubbers' need to mike-up Caruso's voice louder. He had an enormous throw to his voice. He sounds like he's in the bathroom. I am an acoustic 78 collector and I'm taking into account the 'limitations' of horn recording. Turn him up!
Don't remaster digitally these old recordings. Listen critically and conclusion must be that the voice lost its soul and charm. Leave the old records intact please.
I've uploaded an original as well as this remastered version of this, jheuvel3. I did not remaster it myself and I agree that it is not good for people like you and me. The reason I uploaded the remastered version was an effort to reach (younger) people that cannot handle the scratchings of the old recordings. ... In the hope that it would make them curious enough to listen to the old 78's.
And this has WORKED - I can see it from the statistics.
I think this man could have sung in a dustbin and it would have come out as Brilliant singing and so much passion.
