I don’t know why so many people bash Elton’s “Victim of Love” album. It is actually very good. After a wild decade of being the egghead piano man, Elton probably just wanted to change his image slightly by ditching the tiresome eyeglasses long enough for him to just try a different look and sound.
@sandinyourshoes The reason why he did this is well-documented. It was a time when nothing but disco or punk seemed to sell. So Elton tried to "get back into fashion". Since punk and pianos don't go together well, he tried disco. And while the album may be a decent disco album it ranges very low within the blues, soul, gospel, rock etc. stuff he has done before, and he buried the idea of disco pretty quick.
@strangefruit42, many stars were bashed for "going Disco." Rod Stewart felt the lash of the critic's whip when he did "Blondes Have More Fun." However, making albums that no one would buy only angered executives at record labels.
The Bee Gees had been on fire with "Saturday Night Fever," and so it only made sense to see Elton joining the fun. Since his roots were not in Disco, it is easy to see why he did not stay long at all with it. In the end, giving people what they want is practical.
@sandinyourshoes It's the only album where he didn't write one single song and also wasn't playing an instrument. I think if the album wouldn't wear his name alone, it would've been seen a little different, as the project it was.
I imagine that one reason Elton and disco didn't go properly, is because disco is mostly about dancing. And Elton can't dance if his life would depend on it (which I find very cute I have to confess).
@strangefruit42, I am sure Elton could have danced back then or even now if he wanted to train for it. In most cases, only physical injuries would stop someone from doing so, assuming he had the desire to follow the craft. I recall how the late Michael Jackson used dancing so well in his shows.
You mentioned how Elt did not write any of the songs. It makes me consider that the man just wanted to sit back and catch his breath from such a busy time as the 1970s. More work lay ahead for him.
Why i know, i still think he's is best working his magic behind the piano. I prefer Eltons own music. anytime. I don't think this does him justice at all.
It's a bit strange see him standing just with microphone...it really isn't much his style...I'm used to see him behind piano :)

The song was originally written and performed by rock n roll great Chuck Berry.

Without a doubt, the low point of Elton's career.

Elton John - Victim of Disco...

Poor Elt. Always looks a little helpless without his piano. I had no idea he did promo at all for this album.

Personally I think this was Elton's all time low. Love to listen to it, though!

Personally, I think Victim Of Love is somewhat of an underrated album.

Victim of Love may be Elton's lowest charting album to date, but there's probably a lot worse that this.
SaturnTrack 1 year ago
@SaturnTrack Actually, both Ice on Fire (1985) and Leather Jackets (1986) charted lower than Victim of Love did in the States.

Elton John is awesome, but this is probably the worst moment of his career. What was he thinking?
Steambull1 2 years ago
Not bad, but a low water mark by Elton's high standards. Victim of Love isn't exactly his best album...
masermab 2 years ago 2
But it just might be exactly his worst. I guess we all have baby pictures we'd rather not be seen right? haha

Too slow to be danceable but too disco to rock. If someone were to do a remix with a speed-up of the tempo it could be a club hit!
