Actually, thanks to Punch Out, I took up boxing in my youth (none competition though, just shadow boxing and the occasionally sparring). Little Mac taught me that although being small and short, with timing and skill, you can take down bigger guys than you. :D

However, Next Level games went with Aran Ryan rather than Dragon Chan because they wanted Aran to be the game's hooligan. He filled a niche that needed to be filled, while Dragon Chan would be the niche Piston Hondo already fills.

Punch-Out!! was cool before it had Mike Tyson, and it was still cool after. Super Punch-Out!! and Punch-Out!! Wii were great.

@KaeruthePaladin Think of it from a financial perspective. Back in the day, professional boxing was a much bigger deal and back when Tyson was champ his was a household name. But nowadays it wouldn't be nearly as big a selling point, and whatever Tyson's price for licensing his name again is, it really wouldn't be worth it. Anyway, during the rematch with Mr. Sandman, his appearance is similar to that of Tyson's, so it's not like they don't pay tribute to the original game.
