actually, i'm a huge fan of opeth's music, but i have the feeling that they've become too commercial, which i hate. moreover, i dislike the new sound, and also i'm afraid that the older opeth=the better opeth - to me, personally. if their first 2 albums were re-recorded (i.e. the electric guitar parts, acoustic g were sweet) i guess these2 would be my favourite ever probably...and i DO like the damnation (although it's not my fav)album, so it's not about the "heaviness"
@pandaswhatnow they definitely used to be noncommercial, but look at these radio editions, "listener-friendly", cut in length versions of songs which appeared recently...isn't it sad? i mean, these are elements which allow them to enter the world of commerce, i know it's minor, but still for me it's too much.
@ShatteredWindowpane , It's pronounced like Fire, but not starting with an F, it's "f" sound is like the "f" sound in Thick. So, you read it like "Thire".
People need to understand that Opeth achieves at making different cd's with different tastes. Each album has a unique feel to them and I could mostly tell a few seconds the music plays. With the different music they make it gives a wider variety of music to listen to and not just repeat the same shit like a lot of generic metal/metalcore bands do. I didnt use to appreciate Heritage that much until I listened to it in which I could pick apart the songs. Each song has their own special moments.
honestly. this is really good but i like the heavier stuff a little more, blackwater park and the drapery falls are 2 of my favorite metal songs out there.
this album takes me back to damnation. frickin love it. and i love that opeth takes you on a journey with every album. this kinda makes me wanna go out and buy orchid again. and a new damnation as well. lol.
If you're at an Opeth show and are screaming "play fucking metal" then obviously you're not much of a fan or you would know what Opeth is all about. Metal is fucking awesome but awesome music comes in all forms and sounds. Close our eyes, open your ears, and let your mind follow the sound. Opeth is pure brilliance.
probably 1 of my all time favorite songs. loved opeth since orchid. i remember when i first heard opeth it was like finding the holy/unholy grail of music. Heritage is pure fuckin genius. fuck all those who disagree. & to squattingtiger9, the folk influences reflected in their music are more than just swedish
good stuff. I love death metal and tech metal, but Opeth has always been a favorite of mine. They just a very good overall sound. Ghost Reveries was great for me cuz it has some really heavy stuff mixed in. At least they are still good and haven't given up on trying to be creative.
The new stuff sounds nice, but... I don't really LOVE it, youknowwhatimean?Maybe they are too prog for me, but that is the same reason why they have been one of my favorite bands. I would rather listen to dubstep than this new stuff. Opeth + dubstep would be ORGASMIC. eh. People will always complain, so there are my two cents.
Also Metal =/= being a kid. You kids are beign silly.
Part of growing up is evolving. It's absolutely amazing to have a band that has evolved and grown with me over the course of the last 12 years of knowing their music. We all reach that stage where the bands we loved when we were 16 start to feel too immature, and I'm grateful that that hasn't happened with my favorite band in the world :)
Let me say something. This song is fucking awesome. It reeks of Akerfeldt. Anyone that doesn't respect that or Opeths new material has no business calling themselves an Opeth fan because the Opeth fan understands that good music is a reflection of the musicians soul; naturally, peoples souls change with time, thus if Akerfeldt rewrote BWP over and over he would be doing the true music fans a disservice by not preserving the reflection of the current state of their soul. \w/
My favourite Opeth album so far is Damnation, so I actually don't get why people complain about this album not being "heavy" enough. I listen to Opeth to be an emotional trip, not for "deth metuhl".
If that's what you want, return to Morbid Angel and Hate Eternal (great bands, btw), because soft sound is a great part of Opeth.
Not surprisingly, since my last comment here, the album has grown on me ever more. There's not a single track on here I dislike now. One or two parts of tracks I'm not sure about, but overall a really awesome album.
And, here's the best part, I get to hear some of these songs played live TONIGHT! :D
I recommend checking out the setlist from the US tour they just did, because it's practically the same setlist they played last night. A couple of older tracks, but nothing from Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries, and couple of tracks from Watershed. The rest is from Heritage, apart from Throat of Winter. Wasn't any growls, just clean singing all night.

60 yrs old - seen Zeppelin, purple, sabbath & many more in their heyday, opeth are right up there with the best, live & album wise, Heritage is more melodic but still dark, it's great music from a great band - damnation was melodic, then they followed it with ghost of perdition - awesome, a change in style helps to keep them fresh, so they don't become bored with what they're doing, it's the reason they continually keep making good albums, they are sincere, not posers & will rock again no doubt
This album isn't bad but I can't say I actually like it like I do with other Opeth albums....it just feels like something is missing, and im not talking about death growls or distorted guitars, because Damnation was excellent.
@igotwoodhaha You probably mean the tone of the music, since Damnation was dark and seemed to have massive amounts of retrospective tones where as this isn't as dark, more physcadelic than Damnation.
@csmanuel86 Went to their concert in Atlanta back in September... wanted to punch the people shouting "BLACK ROSE IMMORTAL!!! DEMON OF THE FALL!!! DELIVERANCE!!!" and high-five the guy shouting, "PLAY WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT!!!"

Lots of hate on Opeth on a lot of comments for their latest. Opeth, like Devin Townsend grew up...so should the retard 16 year olds who only listen to metal all the time.
@Failhaid Actually, you are right, I was probably a bit to harsh on my opinion there. I think about it now and when I was in that 15-25 year old stage, I only listened to Metal myself and i think because of it I've branched off and have an appreciation for other types of music. Pink floyd, Porcupine tree, hell even Chris isaac and to a further end of the scale Clannad and Enya.....for my sanity lol.
@Squattingtiger9 P.S. Personally I think Heritage lacks that ambient feeling I received from their previous albums. And I was sorely disappointed when I realised that one of my favourite things about Opeth, that is their 'thickening' of layers (through the use of different modulations, effects, dynamics, harmonies, and countermelodies) and contrast with completely stripped down and bare acoustics was absent in this album. And why is Pyre a bonus track...It's one of my faves on the album :/.

@iHateBeingViet Yeah, as I mentioned before, I was probably a bit too solid on my own personal opinion in the above statement. I think what I was trying to get at, was that so many great artists and bands have evolved into something else, then I see a lot of so called fans getting annoyed that their favorite bands have stopped playing " angry music "...I should rephrase the 16 year old mentality to caveman logic. You sound pretty educated, I hope you know what I mean, accept my appology.
@Squattingtiger9 I agree, but that stereotype of 16 year olds is pretty unfair. Many teenagers I saw at Opeth in London a few weeks ago didn't complain (neither did the majority of adults to be fair) but there was a few grown adults that wouldn't shut up!
@Squattingtiger9 So fucking true. What Opeth does, and did, was not only metal. It was progressive metal with folkloric swedish influences. More than just any trash metal song.
i wouldn't say that it's past it's time, it's got a lot of amazing jazz influences that you didn't hear in your metal too much back then. Heritage is one of my favorite Opeth albums now
I just saw them with Katatonia recently. What a difference from the backwater park tour.
The album is O.K. Too much 70s prog. The cover art very much resembles "In search of the lost chord". While the moody blues were before their time, I fear this album is way past it's time.
@zzzzzzzzzz202 I saw them on Tuesday. I thought the setlist and concert was great. But then again, as a die-hard fan, I've been into opeth since 2001. I'm a little more receptive of change than a lot of the new fans that came around 2007 with the release of ghost reveries.
Anyways, It was a great concert. Even got to meet the band. Only thing that sucked was all the assholes that kept yelling "Play some fucking metal!!!". Mike got pissed and was telling them to shut up, he doesn't take requests
@csmanuel86 The same thing happened at the Royal Albert Hall show last year. During the initial quiet section of "Dirge for November" some moron shouted "WHERE IS FUCKING METAL?". This was exceptionally moronic given that the band were playing the whole Blackwater Park album and as such it should have been obvious what was coming and when. Good times!
Same thing happened when I went to go see them. Assholes from the audience would tell him to "scream." He would reply "I'm not going to scream. You can scream, if you want. But I don't want to." During Famine or Nepenthe, can't remember which, some guy came pushing past us in the audience and was bickering because "he came to see some metal, not fucking Carlos Santana." I mean, if you're there only because it's supposed to be d.metal, then honestly you shouldn't be there, right?
People that rag on music, especially like this are lagging behind on their journey. You should be far beyond this by now. Why are you not a more discerning human?
RIP? why RIP? because YOU think it's not good anymore? because YOU think it's not metal anymore?
just sit back, make yourself comfortable and feel the energy of this music. i'm also into Brutal Death Metal, but i somehow enjoy this very much....
of course, the first thing everybody thinks is, What's up with those dudes now? but hey, it's progressive Metal (or Rock in that case) so it maybe just needs a few more listens to get into it for you :-)
@Failhaid hey brother, you got me wrong! if you like this album is ok dude! just is my opinion , i like opeth cause they play progressive , but in this album is more jazz drum , old riff, just rock, i love the changes but this was so utmost than the progressive, so dont be mad enjoy , i hope in 5 years you still listen music!!
@leviathandacri i have no problem when people say, "I don't like it, it's ok if others like it, but it's just not my music" that's fine to me, and that's the way i always think...
i just have a problem when people say: "They Died with this album" or "another group that's completely sell out now" or "RIP" .you know, one very good example, people bitch about in flames nowadays - in my eyes these guys could listen to so many other bands that play kinda the old style of them....
I like this album. It may not be "heavy", but it is well played, arranged and musical. This is one of the few bands that have the ability to experiment and still make quality music.
The funny thing is that, while people may hate on Opeth's new album, apparently way more people like it. Their shows are all sold out, their new album came in higher in the charts than any other did before. People dig it, and righteously so! It's a powerful work of art, and even though it may take time to get into it, it's been made with passion and talent.
@MrSmammered Okay, well you are entitled your opinion. I just don't understand why people such as yourself have to deliberately go onto the pages of artists they don't like and be such a troll about disliking the music. (Logical explanation anyone?)
i dont understand y ppl are shitting all over opeths new album, at least hav the respect for a band that never wants to stay the same, they took a risk with this album and straid away from there comfort zone and i give them props for that, plus this album is good, why hate?
@Polak88Pobo I love it, its nice seeing a person writing style progress!! For fuck's sake they are a prog band! haha I'm just glad there are other people who are smart enough to realize this!!! And why are all the stupid fuck hating like this? It's not Opeths for Non Death Metal album... Damnation came out in 2001 all clean, all chill.
@Polak88Pobo What I don't get is how this could be considered a sell out. Progressive rock is one of the least commercially viable styles of music. It's not like they started playing like foo fighters, or qotsa. This is album will never get radio airplay or anything. Just cause they chose to leave death metal doesn't mean they did for financial reasons.
this and face in the snow should have been there on the album.. instead of slither.. just skate over that track .. this track is however a true masterclass .. absolutely ethereal
I just want to say that I got back from the Opeth concert in Houston, and they played this there, It was AWESOME. The concert was one of the best Ive been to.
A bit of a lighter tack than the last few albums, but i don't care.....their music is so wonderful and diverse that i can pick any of their other 9 albums that i have to suit my particular mood. You don't get that from many other bands out there. All hail OPETH and i'm looking forward to the next Jazz Funk / Puppet Show album (Spinal Tap) from them....hmm !! - maybe NOT. :-)
If you don't like the hot topic logo . Shut the fuck up and go pay for the album problem solved cheap fucks bitching about a song your listening to for free .

Mikael doesnt give a fuck about what you want He plays what he wants.

i wouldn't say that it's past it's time, it's got a lot of amazing jazz influences that you didn't hear in your metal too much back then. Heritage is one of my favorite Opeth albums now
guitarherophenom24 4 months ago
I just saw them with Katatonia recently. What a difference from the backwater park tour.
The album is O.K. Too much 70s prog. The cover art very much resembles "In search of the lost chord". While the moody blues were before their time, I fear this album is way past it's time.
rutherk1g 4 months ago
@rutherk1g how was the concert- I'm seeing them on Friday- was there any more headbanging
zzzzzzzzzz202 4 months ago
@zzzzzzzzzz202 I saw them on Tuesday. I thought the setlist and concert was great. But then again, as a die-hard fan, I've been into opeth since 2001. I'm a little more receptive of change than a lot of the new fans that came around 2007 with the release of ghost reveries.
Anyways, It was a great concert. Even got to meet the band. Only thing that sucked was all the assholes that kept yelling "Play some fucking metal!!!". Mike got pissed and was telling them to shut up, he doesn't take requests
csmanuel86 4 months ago 17
@csmanuel86 Wow, those assholes should just have stayed home.
DamienThornes 3 months ago
@csmanuel86 Dude, that happened at our concert too. Mike literally got the guy thrown out.
Haha.
ShdowSora 3 months ago
@csmanuel86 I totally agree with u man
zzzzzzzzzz202 3 months ago
@csmanuel86 The same thing happened at the Royal Albert Hall show last year. During the initial quiet section of "Dirge for November" some moron shouted "WHERE IS FUCKING METAL?". This was exceptionally moronic given that the band were playing the whole Blackwater Park album and as such it should have been obvious what was coming and when. Good times!
mrlomton 2 months ago
@csmanuel86

RIP OPETH :( no metal anymore!!
leviathandacri 4 months ago
@leviathandacri
RIP? why RIP? because YOU think it's not good anymore? because YOU think it's not metal anymore?
just sit back, make yourself comfortable and feel the energy of this music. i'm also into Brutal Death Metal, but i somehow enjoy this very much....
of course, the first thing everybody thinks is, What's up with those dudes now? but hey, it's progressive Metal (or Rock in that case) so it maybe just needs a few more listens to get into it for you :-)
Failhaid 4 months ago
@Failhaid hey brother, you got me wrong! if you like this album is ok dude! just is my opinion , i like opeth cause they play progressive , but in this album is more jazz drum , old riff, just rock, i love the changes but this was so utmost than the progressive, so dont be mad enjoy , i hope in 5 years you still listen music!!
leviathandacri 4 months ago
@leviathandacri i have no problem when people say, "I don't like it, it's ok if others like it, but it's just not my music" that's fine to me, and that's the way i always think...
i just have a problem when people say: "They Died with this album" or "another group that's completely sell out now" or "RIP" .you know, one very good example, people bitch about in flames nowadays - in my eyes these guys could listen to so many other bands that play kinda the old style of them....
Failhaid 4 months ago

I like this album. It may not be "heavy", but it is well played, arranged and musical. This is one of the few bands that have the ability to experiment and still make quality music.
sb1127 4 months ago 3
This entire album, all the way through is fantastic. :) Then the album is over... and that's when it sucks :c worst part of the album.
Then I play it again :) and its great again <3
I Love you opeth <3 You have never dissapointed me.

I'm gonna get on my MP3 player and replaced "Slither" with this song on my Heritage entry. Why this was left off and that track kept on is beyond me.

bajko1000 4 months ago
The funny thing is that, while people may hate on Opeth's new album, apparently way more people like it. Their shows are all sold out, their new album came in higher in the charts than any other did before. People dig it, and righteously so! It's a powerful work of art, and even though it may take time to get into it, it's been made with passion and talent.

@MrSmammered Yeah because Abscess and Infernal Stronghold bear the torch on wonderful music. Opeth is Swedish: your argument is invalid.

@thatissogross Who cares if it holds a torch I just refuse to listen to hipster metal garbage.
MrSmammered 4 months ago
@MrSmammered Okay, well you are entitled your opinion. I just don't understand why people such as yourself have to deliberately go onto the pages of artists they don't like and be such a troll about disliking the music. (Logical explanation anyone?)

i dont understand y ppl are shitting all over opeths new album, at least hav the respect for a band that never wants to stay the same, they took a risk with this album and straid away from there comfort zone and i give them props for that, plus this album is good, why hate?
Polak88Pobo 4 months ago in playlist Liked 46
@Polak88Pobo I love it, its nice seeing a person writing style progress!! For fuck's sake they are a prog band! haha I'm just glad there are other people who are smart enough to realize this!!! And why are all the stupid fuck hating like this? It's not Opeths for Non Death Metal album... Damnation came out in 2001 all clean, all chill.
DannyNephilim91 4 months ago
@Polak88Pobo What I don't get is how this could be considered a sell out. Progressive rock is one of the least commercially viable styles of music. It's not like they started playing like foo fighters, or qotsa. This is album will never get radio airplay or anything. Just cause they chose to leave death metal doesn't mean they did for financial reasons.

@Polak88Pobo Agreed, this is my 2nd favourite after Watershed.

They played this live last week. Was easily the best in a very different sort of setlist!

Even though I bought the deluxe version, I'm still annoyed this wasn't included on the original album (shoulda replaced the shitty Nepenthe)
But it would be worse if it stayed unreleased, at least!

I liked Nepenthe, I can't get into Slither personally. The rest of the album is good for me.
