Nice reference to Lubitsch there. Smart man that Preston Sturges. Nifty dialogue too. Now what's left me shocked: they said Veronica Lake couldn't act. Not at all what I am getting from this clip.
And I like her a lot: she looks like a doll but talks like a proper woman. Very nice.
Veronica's beauty is showcased magnificently in Flesh Feast (1970), during which she asks a gurney-strapped Adolf Hitler if he like her little maggots. Sublime.
I think she was proud and gratified to have an opportunity to display her patriotism and love of country in play-acting the application voracious maggots to Adolf Hitler's flesh. Too bad this wasn't a porn flick, she could have been masturbating too.

The most adorable scene in Hollywood history! Lake is astonishing! Disarmingly beautiful, and the dialogue! Impeccable, whip-smart one-liners from both Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake - and to think Lake was pregnant here! She's gorgeous!!!
Terrific comment. You really hit on the head about Lake. She had "it" as they say in the business. I believe this scene shows that off more than any other.
Dialogue is pitch-perfect, Lake is jaw-droppingly majestic....this was the scene where, at age 16, growing up in the late 80's, I dropped whatever it was I was holding, and said aloud: "Who is that ?!" I was referring, of course, to Lake, not Joel McCrea (though his applaudable performance is duly noted). Thereafter, I lived on a diet of This Gun For Hire, The Blue Dahlia, you name it. My friends were perplexed: "isn't she dead?" They didn't get it. Most celebs today act dead.

@MrJazzHOP The camera loved her. This is my favorite Veronica Lake scene, even over her singing in This Gun For Hire.

I'll research it out and post what I find.

Do you know if this movie is public domain? We want to use a section of it in a documentary series we are creating.

Yes, quite a sad commentary on where we are today 70 years later. Excellent point!

...when Joel McCrea says...."things are tough everywhere...strikes over here..there's no work there's no food..." is he talking about 1941 or 2011...

Agreed. We just have to be thankful for the vast library of older movies with snappy dialogue now available on DVD!

What delightfully snappy dialogue! Wish we had more movies like this.
