He is teaching the dog to be interested in somthing else when he says the key word, a bonus of this is him dropping what ever he has in his mouth, or from being distracted from somthing he is going to take in his mouth. Dogs dont understand english, you could use haddock as the keyword if you wanted! Drop is for us, not the dog. The dog associates the inflection of "drop" to a treat being on the floor. Basic Pavlovian training! Ill be using this with our new puppy :-)
@CanisHR You can use whatever words you want! That's the joy of training your own dog. You can use the word "pizza" if you'd like - it just depends what that word means to your dog once you've trained the behaviour. :)
Chirag is just getting a conditioned response here. Have you tried this? I use this method exclusively now and am in love with it. Works like a charm.
Hmm... doesn't this teach the dog to pick up the thing you reward them for dropping? If I was being given a reward every time I dropped something, I'd pick it up more to drop it and get a treat :P
@NotToImply Hi good question! The dog is not been rewarded for the action of picking up the object for chewing yes. Also I believe that this is best done one trial per session (max 3 per session) which i believe would counter the dog learning to pick up the object so he can be asked to drop it.
@TheWildPaw Hey, I great question! I would use a similar method just change the cue to a visual / tactile one. Was there specific part of it that you were thinking about in relation to the question?
This is an AWESOME approach. I was looking at some of the videos on youtube and a lot of them had to much hyperactive energy involved in the training. This was a much more calm approach to training.
Great method! I had previously used the "swapping for a treat" method but I like this more. Wonderful examples of helping generalize the behavior, too. Thanks for sharing this!
I like this method in theory...but what do you do with those dogs who have something really high value, and look at you intently when you say the cue, however, continue to hold the object in their mouth. they can then see what youre working with and choose to continue with what they have if it's more motivating. how do you work with these situations? great video. good for you for using a science based, positive method :)
Tried this for a day and it's already working so well! Most of the time, he smells the treat and already drops the item/looks at me. Thank you so much!
Great video. Just sent it to a new client that has a 12wk old lab. They are using confrontational methods and the pup is now aggressing when they take things from him. Biting.
This is an excellent video. My dog is possessive of his toys and absolutely will not relent. I always manage to distract him by using a squeaker toy in my pocket but I never know if I'm doing everything in the right sequence. Thankfully I know exactly what I need to do now in order for him to get the hang of drop. Can't wait to try this out tomorrow :)
Chirag, great video! Someone just brought it to my attention and I love it! I especially like how you demonstrate making the 'drop' highly reinforcing rather than just putting a tiny piece of kibble in the dog's mouth and then wondering why it doesn't work! I will be sure to guide clients to this as many have a tendency to be stingy with reinforcement.
I live in Cyprus where thousands of dogs are willfully poisoned each year. I take my dogs out with muzzles on but most dog owners don't, despite knowing the dangers. It's heart breaking
This tutorial makes it look so easy - I'm going to share this with as many other dog owners in Cyprus as I can - and maybe we can help save a few lives.
Brilliant! I especially love the way you recover from the mistake of letting Cody get too excited over the tug toy -- the explanation of how to deal with this situation provides such a good example of how to work with training mistakes without using "corrections."
Thanks! I waited until Cody was looking for treats I had not yet dropped after saying "drop". I then did a few sessions of drop as he was walking towards an object I had put on the floor & finally when he had lower value items in his mouth then higher value ones. When I did the first few reps of higher value items I threw cubes of cheese over the floor the first couple of times after I said the word regardless of his behaviour, but found that he had spat out the item in anticipation...
incredible!!! May I ask about how long it took before you incorporated Drop with something in Cody's mouth? How long were your training sessions? This is so exciting and I can't wait to try it out. thank you!!
Very interesting method. We have a good "aus" (German for "drop") and I think we started with working a trade, fomr mouth to hand, but the idea of throwing is interesting.
Drop What?

Shouldn't that be "leave it" rather than "drop it"? A dog has nothing in its mouth. Confusing.

@whattapup Yes I know you can use any word :) It just makes more sense to people who don't know that. Nice video though. ;)
