They are AIRCRAFT, not aeroplanes!!!, not airplanes!!!!!, not planes!!!
A plane is a flat surface, an airplane is a lazy way of saying aeroplane, which is again, a flat surface except that it my be curved like a WING. A WING is an aeroplane, an aileron is an aeroplane, and airfoil is an airplane/aeroplane!
The whole machine, that flies, with a fuselage, wings, elevators and rudder - that is an AIRCRAFT!!! : )
A wing of 20 B-70 Valkyrie's was funded by Congress and a approved by LBJ for FY1967
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara withheld the funds for the aircraft and diverted them illegally
Since it's politically inappropriate to tell the American people that the SECDEF is prick, a BS cover story was put out
The cover was that up and coming air defense systems (a blatant lie nothing on the planet today is capable of intercepting a Mach 3 aircraft) made the B-70 obsolete
I remember seeing this in the early 70's as a little kid when my dad took me to WPAFB. Simply stunning. We have an SR71 here in Oregon now. Another stunner. Thanks for sharing
the 2 prototypes they made cost more than their weight in GOLD. and they were heavy mofos.
the pilots were hosed in separate shock-proof "eggs" to enhance their chance of survival in case of a crash.
the thing used a type of "claws" on the trailing edge of it wings to hang on to a sonic boom as it traveled at more than 60,000 ft up, mach 3.5+.. utterly crazy space trek on acid and glue man!
My father worked at Cleveland Pneumatic Tool where they made the landing gears for this beauty. Unfortunately, the government ended the project and my dad was laid off.
it couldnt be to fantastic if they only built two prototypes, when jets dont get passed the prototype stange something is a problem,so fantastic airplane-not.
not entirely true in this case. In an era of new ballistic missles to deliver nukes,, the money to continue development of an out-dated "bombers" was cancelled. Especially after the fatal crash of the "good" prototype, there wasnt a justification to continue development.
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. I live nearby and have been several times. This plane is truly amazing for me to see everytime! It aint the smithsonian but still very good and very reasonably priced. Yearly july airshow is decent also.
The XB-70 is the prize exhibit at Wright-Patterson, but the hanger that houses it, unlike the rest of the museum, is in a military restricted area on the base. You have to sign up to get on a bus that takes you there, and you're not allowed to remain there for more than about 40 minutes. The XB-70 and the X-15 A-2 were the main reason I went to the museum, and I hardly got any time to look at them.
One of the two was lost in a midair collision, while the other ended up in the museum.
With a few development problems and very high cost ($20million per flight), and ICBMs, it was seen as unnecessary. It was uses for several years by the Air Force and Nasa for research.
As for the Sukhoi T-4, it only flew 10 hours and 40 minutes--total. It never achieved it's intended performance and highest known speed of mach 1.89-- and was not a bomber but a reconnaisance and interceptor. Continued.
To settle many disputes, the XB-70 only flew mach 3--3.08 at 72000feet. It was designed to cruise at mach 3 because drag was greater at transsonic (high subsonic)speed. It would burn more fuel per hour, but cover more miles in that hour. Originally designed to use a new Boron fuel, later switched to JP-6.
Only 2 were built since the project was cancelled as a cost-cutting measure by Def. Sec. Macnamara. Continued next.
HunterX109 .... I was just at the museum in May 2008. The XB-70 is still there. There is a seperate hanger just for the X-planes. You have to take a shuttle bus to it from the main museum. Only about 10 aircraft are still outside. All the others are now in hangers. I think they are going to build another hanger eventually. Great museum. Took me and my brother about 7 hours just to look at everything! Admittance is free too!
I went to Wright-Pat AFB once in 1982 or 83. At the time this plane was outside the building. I listened to most of the commentary from the museum worker but not all. I'll add that this was #1 of 2 that were built. The second one was lost in a mid-air collision.
Not a great video, but a gem nonetheless! Hadn't heard of the XB-70 in many, many years. This was a precursor to the SR-71 in the late 1950's! Anybody still doubt the existence of Aurora?
How could it be better when the T-4 never reached mach 3? The T-4 was a rip off of the older XB-70 Valkyrie; it's raised fuselage, delta wing, & forward canard similarities aren't coincidental. The Soviets, knowing NASA would spend billions on research for a super sonic bomber used the XB design for their own version; the T-4. Just as they did with the Tu-160 (B-1), Tu-4 (B-29), & space shuttle. The Soviets even designed their modern day MiG/Su fighters after the XB-70 (raised fuselage).
WOW! I see it from camra that the XB-70 in the museum. I am vary mad now knowing that they took it out. I wish it was there still. I want to see it for myself!

And to think that an phenomenal aircraft like the XB-70 Valkyrie was designed and built before the advent of computer-aided design, powerful mathematics and simulation software.
It stands with the SR-71 as one of the greatest accomplishments in aerospace engineering ever.
The Foxbat with its welded stainless steel air frame was produced in quantity just in case this plane was ever built.
Final Foxbats were reported to be able to sprint to Mach 3.3 if they were to sacrifice their engines in order to chase and intercept a black bird. No one has ever proved a Foxbat could run down and kill black brid or Valkyrie but its does hold all the offical records
we were at the museum a few days ago so not possible to make a vid like this because the ceiling is now painted flat black so glad this vid is here for ppl to see. Even so, go to Dayton and see it yourself even if you cannot get a nice vid like this one.
i thought the XB70 was different from the aurora... the aurora was supposedly groom lake's dark eagle that was spotted in the black sea and stuff... anyone care to correct?
You morons! this is the XB-70 Valkerie! the aurora bomber is still Unknown. there's no way they would release it in a museum when they don't know what they're talking about
Funny, I was thinking the same thing about you. This plane was designed to replace the B52 as a Mach 3 intercontinental bomber. It was deemed too complicated and expensive, and it was replaced by the B1B Lancer supersonic bomber and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. It was not ever used by NASA for testing.
He guy Amerika steel all his modern warfare from the Nazis, Germans got the first Nuklear-reaktor, the first Rockets, the first Stealthfighter and so on and so on
I love all of these planes! Too bad that they are mostly intended for warfare. Will war ever become obsolete? War will probably only end when we exterminate ourselves. The rest of the universe will probably say, 'another one bites the dust'...
no... the Tu-144 was a sxaled up copy of the xb-70... but it really didn't matter in the long run... the ICBM killed any need for a fleet of super sonic bombers... and then came the b-1 ... and here we go again... *sigh*
The T-4 Sotka actually is what you are refferring to..It was the bomber and not the Tu-144. The T-4 was smaller than the XB-70 and only had 4 engines. It never achieved speeds as high as the XB-70..It also didn't fly until the 1970's, well after the XB-70.
Who cares who the hell built it,it's frickin' fantastic...It flies partially using the power of its own sonic booms right? So in theory, the faster it goes the more fuel efficient it would become correct? So minus the fact that certain speeds would no doubt bring the structural integrity into question, the faster it moves the smoother it operates. Then there's of course the question of g-forces on the pilots.Imagine that,a machine built in the 1950's,so powerful, its only weakness is a human pilot.
Oh, I get it. The plane is the "Valkyrie" and the music is "Ride of the Valkyrie." Clever. If you were a lawyer, would your vanity plate say "LAWYER"?
Somebody tell me what can make a bomber or a jet go up to mach 1? is it better engines or what?? if so y doesn't our airforce just make a super engine that allow our aircraft to go up to mach 10???thx
you can get an aircraft of any size to exceed the speed of sound by designing it to be slipperier (streamlining) and by developing big honking engines that can push it through the air faster than the air can get out of the way. Problem is ( as previously mentioned) that around Mach 2.5-3.0, all that air being pushed aside heads up the aircraft and things get too hot for stuff like engines and fuselages, even with modern materials. They're working on it (eg: Hyper-X)
yea but thatsnot the AURORA the AURORA is ment to be that fast you cant see it from the ground and its alot faster then the but there also a new aircraft (film stealth) the talon was a prototype and in one landing scene its real footage cus it was a test aircraft but not for militery uses it was for the new fighter aircraft ovewr taking the role of the old stealth the aircraft is called shadowhawk but is not coming into production because of safty reasons eg very unstable in flight
The XB-70 is not the Aurora, and was a huge waste of money! The YF-12 was already a more capable platform and one that wouldn't get shot down; unlike the 70 which was a big beautiful defenseless target for the Soviets new high altitude SA missiles. Thanks to Gen. LeMay (who LOVED the XB-70) the Oxecart project and field tested YF-12 platform developed for the CIA got stonewalled as a tactical bomber/ long range intercepter. ps Mach=speed of object/speed of sound in that substance. no exact speed
mach 1 = its speed is equal to the speed of sound in air (which is 332 m/s or 1195 km/hr or 717 miles/hour.) When you get to that speed you fo faster that the speed of sound, and thats create a sonic boom, when you go at that speed, you can't hear anything, because you break the wall of sound.
America is an amazing country. You can't get a good medical care if you are not rich, but they build a supersonic jet, which costs billion of dollars. I don't understand, maybe because I am an ignorant southamerican.
The only ignorant thing you said is: "America is a country"!!!mostly if u r southAmerican! And what is amazing about US is how good they are to steal from Germany. That's a inheritance from UK!
papuette actually health care quality depends on where one lives, there are plenty of myths, But private charity exists, from hospitals and doctors as well as from individuals who support charitable organizations. Some two-thirds of the health care received by the uninsured costs them nothing.
Sonic boom happens when a object breaks the speed of sound (about 330 meters per second), It's what makes a whip crack (the tip of the whip travels faster than the speed of sound)
Alvinabejuro, a sonic boom is a visual effect produced by an aircraft exceeding the speed of sound. It kind of looks like a explosion wrapped around the airplane, not to mention how loud it is.
all teh sound waves are usually on front of around and behind teh plane but as u approch the speed of sound then the start to gather at the front and when u pass the speed of sound u break through them all so everyone u fly past will hear a loud noise known as a sonic boom as u pass
simply put the air can't get out the way fast enough so u push it much like lighting pushes air as it makes its descent and u get thunder.the same sound a plane makes when this happens.

And to think that an phenomenal aircraft like the XB-70 Valkyrie was designed and built before the advent of computer-aided design, powerful mathematics and simulation software.
It stands with the SR-71 as one of the greatest accomplishments in aerospace engineering ever.
TerryBogardHimself 3 years ago
Depends on your POV.
The Foxbat with its welded stainless steel air frame was produced in quantity just in case this plane was ever built.
Final Foxbats were reported to be able to sprint to Mach 3.3 if they were to sacrifice their engines in order to chase and intercept a black bird. No one has ever proved a Foxbat could run down and kill black brid or Valkyrie but its does hold all the offical records

or is it still going today?

No, I don't think it even ever cleared the prototype phase it may have though, it was made for the Coldwar I think.

@6:37 that was the X-3 Stiletto(which was kind of a technical whoopsie as for what it was supposed to be capable of).
Chuck Yeager flew the X-1 past mach 1.

we were at the museum a few days ago so not possible to make a vid like this because the ceiling is now painted flat black so glad this vid is here for ppl to see. Even so, go to Dayton and see it yourself even if you cannot get a nice vid like this one.

Can anyone show me a map on mapquest where the museum is?

Tell me the address or mapquest map of where the museum is. This AURORA is freakin me out!

i thought the XB70 was different from the aurora... the aurora was supposedly groom lake's dark eagle that was spotted in the black sea and stuff... anyone care to correct?

You morons! this is the XB-70 Valkerie! the aurora bomber is still Unknown. there's no way they would release it in a museum when they don't know what they're talking about

This was a NASA test aircraft designed to test certain speeds at high altitudes and vice versa.
Some of you people are ignorant.
virtualmatrix258 3 years ago
Funny, I was thinking the same thing about you. This plane was designed to replace the B52 as a Mach 3 intercontinental bomber. It was deemed too complicated and expensive, and it was replaced by the B1B Lancer supersonic bomber and Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. It was not ever used by NASA for testing.

I love all of these planes! Too bad that they are mostly intended for warfare. Will war ever become obsolete? War will probably only end when we exterminate ourselves. The rest of the universe will probably say, 'another one bites the dust'...
redletterchurch 3 years ago
war (on this scale) will be obsolete, when mankind is gone... but war is everywhere in the natural world, from ants, on up the foodchain.

hehe, It's look like smaller version of Tupolev-144 (Tu-144) :-)
I like it
netpop 3 years ago
no... the Tu-144 was a sxaled up copy of the xb-70... but it really didn't matter in the long run... the ICBM killed any need for a fleet of super sonic bombers... and then came the b-1 ... and here we go again... *sigh*
louswire 3 years ago

Then there's of course the question of g-forces on the pilots.Imagine that,a machine built in the 1950's,so powerful, its only weakness is a human pilot.
youngdragon32 3 years ago
Oh, I get it. The plane is the "Valkyrie" and the music is "Ride of the Valkyrie." Clever. If you were a lawyer, would your vanity plate say "LAWYER"?

Somebody tell me what can make a bomber or a jet go up to mach 1? is it better engines or what?? if so y doesn't our airforce just make a super engine that allow our aircraft to go up to mach 10???thx
MasterChief22530 3 years ago
you can get an aircraft of any size to exceed the speed of sound by designing it to be slipperier (streamlining) and by developing big honking engines that can push it through the air faster than the air can get out of the way. Problem is ( as previously mentioned) that around Mach 2.5-3.0, all that air being pushed aside heads up the aircraft and things get too hot for stuff like engines and fuselages, even with modern materials. They're working on it (eg: Hyper-X)
wanker64 3 years ago
yea but thatsnot the AURORA the AURORA is ment to be that fast you cant see it from the ground and its alot faster then the but there also a new aircraft (film stealth) the talon was a prototype and in one landing scene its real footage cus it was a test aircraft but not for militery uses it was for the new fighter aircraft ovewr taking the role of the old stealth the aircraft is called shadowhawk but is not coming into production because of safty reasons eg very unstable in flight

The XB-70 is not the Aurora, and was a huge waste of money! The YF-12 was already a more capable platform and one that wouldn't get shot down; unlike the 70 which was a big beautiful defenseless target for the Soviets new high altitude SA missiles. Thanks to Gen. LeMay (who LOVED the XB-70) the Oxecart project and field tested YF-12 platform developed for the CIA got stonewalled as a tactical bomber/ long range intercepter. ps Mach=speed of object/speed of sound in that substance. no exact speed

what is a SONIC BOOM ? does anybody here can give me idea what it is and how it works?THANKS.
alvinabejuro 3 years ago
mach 1 = its speed is equal to the speed of sound in air (which is 332 m/s or 1195 km/hr or 717 miles/hour.) When you get to that speed you fo faster that the speed of sound, and thats create a sonic boom, when you go at that speed, you can't hear anything, because you break the wall of sound.
222Panther222 3 years ago
In other words you physically leave the sound that you are creating behind you.
nutster9000 3 years ago
spead of sound depends on level over the ground
hussarcompl 3 years ago
In an ideal gas, the speed of sound is directly proportional to temperature, not pressure.
oisiaa 3 years ago
mach is exactly equal to 1225 km/h at sea level.

JamesBondMatrix007 3 years ago
a sonic boom is what you here mhen a plane flys by faster then sound well its the sound the plane makes
3ofp3nt1cl35 3 years ago
all teh sound waves are usually on front of around and behind teh plane but as u approch the speed of sound then the start to gather at the front and when u pass the speed of sound u break through them all so everyone u fly past will hear a loud noise known as a sonic boom as u pass
sgtslaughter97 3 years ago
simply put the air can't get out the way fast enough so u push it much like lighting pushes air as it makes its descent and u get thunder.the same sound a plane makes when this happens.
