This man really possesses something unique to himself, the intangible notion of talent that keeps the listener spellbound and curious. A truly great performer, one of his own kind. And to think that I had never heard of him before... Thank you for sharing!
this man is great i know that.... breathtaking playing, it is just not boring. if everybody sticks on the notes they see in the music, then after a while, everybody play exactly the same, then we don´t need newcomers anymore... "you gotta improvise the work you see in the music...", you gotta be the Jazzer in classic. I like this a lot. If Beethoven wasnt in that Opinion, he couldnt be Beethoven.
May I say that ivry gitlis as a dirty sound? maybe dirty isnt the word but if you compare it with hillary hahn of instance... He has a wonderfoul unique vibrato and is sound is unlike every other great violinists sound... His interpretations are simply the best...
Maybe "earthy" is better. But I see what you mean, combines the image of the soul of mother earth fertility, life and true beauty with gritty, dusty and even maybe nasty.
People either love him or hate him and sometimes both.
He really lays it all out there and puts his heart on his sleeve. At his best there is none better. At his worst, well, I'll leave that to others. This particular recording of course is a tour de force! Marvelous!
No one can play this one awkward harmonic note in the double harmonic variation that is a combination of a 4th and 5th harmonics imposing an extremely awkward stretch. Everyone else plays it as double 5ths instead. Paganini's technique remains unmatched

that guy looks like he died 1000 years ago, and just got pulled up from out of he grave, been shot a few times and left to bake in the sun on a stone floor and been dipped in vingar a few times and got reincarnated as a zombie that played this song in 1903, it's that scary
I like it..and I in my mind I think this may have possibly been somewhat the way Paganini may have played, since it is said he really didn't play things the same way twice, it sound like Paganini may have not adhered to strict formalities..much like this. I had to listen to it a couple of times to really appreciate it but it is beautifully played.
wow...really weird playing...unstable and uncertain melodies but rocksolid fast passages! There are violinists that play better and more beautifully BUT...there is something magical and unique in his playing!Paganini would definately approve!
Hmmm...I'd have to say that not many can play better or more beautifully than he, you ought listen to more of him and you'd see what I mean. But I certainly respect what you're saying, thanks for the comment :-D
i am also fan of gitlis listening, but i dont like people comparing violinsts. so many differents styles and ways are great, and for me there is no better or worse ... as long as it is special in a certain way .. like Gitlis :D
I personally am not a fan of Gitlis' wild tempo changes, sudden changes in dynamic, or abbrupt changes in tone color, but for Paganini it seems appropriate. Probably more so than Szeryng...and Szeryng is one of my musical heros.
Holy cow! An awesome display of virtuosity. I used to have the old Francescatti version of this piece and have to admit it's still my favorite, but Gitlis is wonderful here. Truly a God of the violin!
What number of Paganini concerts? If you talk about No. 1 ( D dur) I propose first to listen here the version of Vasco Abadjiev from1952 and after that comment the comparison despite the bad quality ov VA-record on 78 rmv.
Ivry Gitlis tiene algo mágico en su sonido, que me cautiva, que cualquier dificultad técnica la hace sublime y sobrepasa los límites de la dificultad convencional creando su arte personal en cada obra y su interpretación magistral.
Tremendous !

fantastic.
he definitely plays to his own tune. an absolutely refreshing take on a piece that has been played too metronomely.
i would have trouble...no, i wouldnt be able to produce his unique sound. ever.

This is actually the original way. Paganini used the Scordata (tuning all strings a half-step higher) thus making it B flat major.
