Here's why the American Godzilla sucked: He didn't breathe fire (Or atomic energy or whatever you want) and he wasn't invincible. Without those two things, he's not Godzilla; just another giant reptile that's tearing the city up. The movie should've been called something like "Jurassic Park on Steroids" because that's what it was supposed to be: Capitalizing on the success of Jurassic Park, and using the Godzilla name to capitalize even further.

It wasn't a bust but it also wasn't the blockbuster Sony was looking for. And you're wrong, the highest grossing movie that year was Armegeddon raking in $550 million world wide. In terms on how much was spent vs the amount they made, they're not even in the top 10.

@Darthzair There is nothing wrong with GINO, they should've just changed his name and roar if they wanted something "different". They didn't have to toy with a classic monster's appearance. I think the Japanese did a good job. He was an unknown dinosaur before he became Godzilla, and survived extinction. When nuclear bombs were tested, he changed physically and grew larger. GINO looks cool, but I just think that he shouldn't be called Godzilla, because he isn't.

After seeing this commercial when it first came out, I remember telling my sis that Toho/Columbia was probably using this as a way to test the waters to see how people/webbies would react to seeing this American version of Godzilla again, especially since it's been years since the last one. Too bad there wasn't much of a positive result, otherwise for sure the moviemakers would've opted for a sequel right away.
it was actually a decent series, in my own opinion. atcually received good reviews, but its air-time was hurt by that fucking pokemon/digemon war that Fox and some other company were having, so it kinda died off.

it was actually a decent series, in my own opinion. atcually received good reviews, but its air-time was hurt by that fucking pokemon/digemon war that Fox and some other company were having, so it kinda died off.
worth checking out, if you have the time. there are a bunch of episodes on youtube.

Dude, no. Japanese godzilla kicks way more ass. In fact, thers even a movie where Jap Godzilla kills American Godzilla in less than a minute. Japanese godzilla rules. I'm not dis-respecting the fact that you like American Godzilla better, just don't diss the japanese one, who most giant monster fans prefer.

no. godzilla 1988 was a good movie in itself. yes sure it wasn't like the original godzilla but them movies are crap anyway. apart from the first. 1988 was NO WHERE near as bad as what toho did to kong.

I have to agree with that. I own King Kong vs. Godzilla, its eef'n terrible. I expected more. I was so disappointed as a kid.
As dumb as Godzilla was in some parts, at least I got exactly what I wanted as a kid. Plus its well shot.
