Probably the cheapest way is to take an old sheet and use green clothes dye. You'll then get a feel for chroma-keying without having to invest much money. MuggleSam and a few others have used green sheets of paper pinned to a wall, and that seems to work quite well. You can actually key with any color, chroma-green is just the fancy name for a color that some manufacturer chose.
