@scottbaioisdead, you cowardly wannabe Japanese "Ninja." What a joke you are. Why don't you face off with a Korean scholar instead of attacking other online weekend warrior wannabe ninjas like you? Really, your generalizations about Koreans amount to racism. YOU ARE NOT JAPANESE. YOU ARE NOT A NINJA, AND YOU NEVER WILL BE. Your own teachers are telling you to be more respectful. You wannabe ninja-turtle! Go hide in your mom's basement.
@Atonfrc It is probably heavily inspired by him but the real story behind his lost arm is a bit different. From what I've heard, he lost his arm as a child when he came across a WW2 mine or something. Ueda sensei is one of the greatest masters of SK.
This is Ueda Sensei, a teacher of Shorinji Kempo. To cover some of the comments below, the shakujo can be a substantial item and whilst a brass head isn't steel, it is heavy so you wouldn't want to be hit with it. The shakujo isn't just just used to intimidate, strikes and thrusts are taught and are meant to land and injure. The Shakujo isn't a weapon per-se but rather an improvised instrument of defence. Ueda Sensei is also pretty awsome unarmed.
I was taught that Shakujo itself wasnt originally designed as a weapon - rather large walking sticks with rattles installed to allow monks who walk through the bush to scare away snakes and other animals. The Shajuko doubles as a self defense device, where the large swinging and twirling techniques are again designed to intimidate attackers, rather than to be used strictly to strike down others. Im not sure if shakujo should really be classed as a 'weapon' in this sense
There may have been a "Weaponized" version of the shakujo, such as the one in Soke's collection, but real, traditional shakujo are just flimsy sticks and the heads are often made of tin, aluminum or brass. (soft metals)
But then, and this is why this video makes me laugh, it is not a military weapon, it is a taijutsu weapon, so it's strength is irrelevant.
I am sorry he has only one arm, but this is not budo.
It ought to be about 4-5 feet tall (it is a JO, not a BO)
hahah please weeabos like you are what ruin japan and make us look like weirdos please stop begging for attention u are ridiculos!u dont represent the thoughts of the japanese people!!, ya go throw shurikens at your wall some more and leave us alone!!
He still has his upper arm, right? That's a lot of skill, although I never really understood the shakujo as a weapon. I mean, I guess monks never tried to have pre-emptive strikes, but those rings are always going to rattle. Do you hit with the very end of the staff, or can you use the circle ring that houses the other rings as a sort of hammer or something?
If you're selling shakujo, are you going to have different colors? I never knew the main shaft could be red, but I know little of them
Oh wow! That's something neat to learn! Hmm . . . I guess the shaft has to be straight then. Do you screw it in or something . . . ? hmm, how -do- you fit on the head?
tapered, really? when I said "straight", I meant untapered . . . I guess I'm lucky for owning a tapered staff . . . although I should probably get another one, because six feet, plus an attachment, would wreck the place where I live, haha.
Somewhere buried in my library, I have an article about Ueda-sensei. It covers his training and how he lost his arm. It's been years since I've seen or read it. I'll see if I can find it.

Improvise, overcome, adapt. Just goes to show you the Martial arts will adapt to you, you dont necessarily have to adapt to them. AWESOME.

This guy is amazing, I didn't even notice that he had only one arm. (Then again, it was 10:00 and I was getting sleepy from the medicine I took.)

im sory, im not really familiar with a shakujo, is it basically a jo/bo with an oddly shaped blade on top?
JadenPrinceton12 2 years ago
It's a Buddhist monk's staff. It doesn't have a blade, it has rings.
