Corexit 9500 is highly toxic and has been banned for use in the UK. The use of this poison in the Gulf will kill off the animals and eventually the people in that area.

I have read that bioremediation with oil consuming organisms would be the most effective and safest means of dealing with the oil. Corexit is a poisonous chemical that should not be used AT ALL. Another video I watched demonstrated the effectiveness of using simple hay to absorb the oil.

i suspect dispersants are a bad idea...why break the oil up in a way that cannot be as easily gathered; its not like its just going to disappear. Certainly having the oil on top of the water is not good, but suspended up and down in the water? That makes the band of affliction and assault worse....covering an even wider area, reducing berth.

Yesterday several fisherman who had been working with these dispersants were rushed to the emergency room and treated for toxic chemical inhalation. BP had a tent set up outside the hospital where the ill fishermen were intercepted, stripped of all clothing, hosed off and asked to sign confidentiality agreements. Tony Hayward commented on the incident that it was likely food poisoning.

they should use HAY, just watched a great video with Farmers who have tested this technique and it seems quite effective. The oil looks like it attaches well to the hay and will be easier to collect than all those boats using methods that are only scratching the surface of cleaning up the mess. I'd rather see a natural method rather than chemicals which will be giving the sea life a double wammy.....NOT GOOD!! :(

I agree with jfmart65, chemical dispersants break up and dilute the oil making it harder to control and collect. I'm very skeptical of its benefits and think it is probably a solution designed to be used in much smaller spills. I worry that it adds to the difficulty in the cleanup.

Chemicals added to disperse oil will kill all sea life. The oil has killed all sea life it has come in contact with. The bodies of the dead are on the sea floor (negatively buoyant due to lack of oxygen)

I think non-chemical methods should be used .... I'm inclined to favor the boom and barrier method but combine it with technologies to pick up the oil. I recently saw a video demonstration of how straw can be used to provide a surface for the oil to stick to and then the floating straw can be collected when it washes to shore or it could be picked up with special nets.

if i knew whether or not the dispersant worked, how well it worked, if I knew it would save more sea life than it killed i could make a decision, the people in position to make decisions seem more interested in taking away decision power from mayors, governors, etc... than trying to stop the leak, and/or suck up oil in booms, hay, tankers, anything; give it away, refine it, incinerate it for energy, etc, people will come get it, there is so much more we can do, somethings really wrong

BP (bad petroleum) uses dispersant (Corexit 9500 (antifreeze)) not to save the environment, but to hide the oil from the public. The oil is not being cleaned up it's toxins are being dissolved into our waters. If the oil would be left whole and floating it could be cleaned without effecting so many sea creatures. As a commercial fisherman I would rather the oil to have been cleaned up than dispersed and possibly lose a way of life that no amount of money could replace.

from my understanding the "dispersant" breaks down the oil not just makes it sink. basically dissolving the oil into the oceans waters instead of allowing it to pool on top of the water where it moves as a slick and can end up on land and marine animals. allowing the oil to dissolve would be allot like mixing a packet of kool-aid in a swimming pool afters its stirred in you wont know the difference before though it might stain something ...

i think that having the oil sink to the bottom of the sea is not a good idea i mean if having it on the surface is bad imagine it on the bottom many species will be affected by the oil reaching the bottom of the sea. i think BP took a desperate decision by adopting the chemecal solution without knowing the impact it will have.
