Sonny hired Zander to watch out for Carly and make sure she didn't do anything crazy after they divorced. Z and Carly became friends. Eventually, Z came clean and told Carly about Sonny's orders. Carly got mad but quickly forgave him and agreed to let him continue being her bodyguard of sorts. Z started to fall for Carly and they kissed a few times, but she was still hung up on Sonny. Then Carly saw Alexis in bed with Sonny and ran to Z for comfort, but he rejected her when he realized ...

... she was just using him. Carly drove off a bluff after their fight & was presumed dead. Z blamed himself. Carly turned up alive & Z wanted to persue a relationship, but she wasn't interested & got w/ Sonny. Jason, who had returned while Carly was missing, entered the picture & Z accused him & Carly of having an affair under Sonny's nose. Sonny decided he'd had enough of Z & fired him. A pissed Z went to a rival mobster w/ info. Sonny had Z beaten & Carly and Z's friendship was over.
