  • Jay kind of looks like a mix between the oldest Hudson brother and John Holmes.

  • God, I love overwelming evidence that this video was recreated and taken right to Spinal Tap. Jay Ferguson was in a band called Spirit, which sound is recreated for listen to the flower people, theres a guy in this video that looks like Nigel, AND hes chewing gum.

  • Can you give me an example of a classic rap tune , I want to hear vocal ability and musicianship ?

  • Did anyone besides me notice that the bass player looks like the dude from Spinal Tap?

  • jayferguusonoffice

  • I love that breakdown in the middle of the song.

  • Staple of radio station KWK in St. Louis.

  • only song in popular music with lyrics about getting shanghai'd and put to work as a deckhand on the high seas?

  • Wow! What a kick ass band and recording for the time!

  • pull the black tape off the Hiwatt amp please.....

    always loved this song

  • I just found out that Jay also wrote the theme to The Office (NBC). Ha!

  • The good stuff...Oh Yeahh!! WZZQ 102.9 Jackson, MS cranked this out back in the day...Haven't heard this one in 30+yrs...WoWwww!!

  • This is a GREAT live version of this song. Thanks for posting!

  • Great tune from a better musical time...Nigel on bass.

  • Any one who thinks todays music is better than this can go squeeze the sails and lick the decks. Great stuff here and great memories.

  • shakedown cruise my fav radio station in alabama whhy y-102 played this song all the time

  • Great memories of singing this song on softball fields in summer 79...between catches of course

  • This was such an underrated album! You could listen to it from start to finish and never be tempted to get up and change the needle! Thanks for the post! KILLER!

  • The studio version is much better. I mean their live version is great ; But I guess they yanked the studio cut...*

  • Ooo! This is good stuff. Awww memories =)

  • I'm looking for the original version.

  • lookin for Babylon,,,,

  • It is a wonder that no one seems to have a copy of Jay's BABYLON which I do on vinyl I think ...

  • Question: What Key does Jay Ferguson sing "Shakedown Cruise" in???

Answer: The KEY of D: 5A-1D-4G-6mBm.

Chords are more often than not a direct mathematical function of KEY

  • YOU CAN HEAR JAY EVERY WEEK, or at least his hot 0:43 open ---> he wrote the theme to NBC-TV's version of "THE OFFICE." How about THAT???!!!!

  • Now it appears the fact that Spinal Tap looks like this band (Viv and ?Nigel, ) is no accident. Listen to the Flower Children was heavily influences, from the band Spirit. Spirit featured Jay Ferguson, Ferguson put this out 13 years later.

  • lost in the garage sale vinyl...sitting in someone's garage under a ton of baby clothes

  • Not mine!

  • Have this and Thunder Island on near perfect 45's.

  • Great backup harmonies too!!

  • Thunder Island just makes me uh, imagine what it was like when I was in 20;s.. I remember!!!.. Been there, done that.Still love the feeling of the song.

  • I forgot what a bad-mofo this tune was. Who is that guitar player? Drummer?

    What's Jay doing lately??

  • One of Jay`s best songs.

The guitar player is Bob Webb and the drummer is Curly Smith.

  • Drummer is Harry Stinson, not Curly Smith.

  • There was a JoJoGunne reunion last year, not sure if its still on, with Jay, Mark Andes, Mark's brother, and Curly.

  • you gotta love the 70`s, the music, the looks,ah man you gotta love it all, far out!

  • another lost classic

  • one of the great lost 45s of all time!!!

  • Don Kirchner's along with the Midnight Special were the shit at that time....Good tunes.

  • I love Jay! Especially in his days with Spirit. But, Jay, what's up with the right leg kicks?

  • Great tune and talent , not like rap shit and other assorted pre fab junk of the last 20 years

  • @terry9966 Ugh. . . Well you can hide away honey, in your rock and roll dreams,

You can stand by your blue suede shoes-

    But the party is over,

And I'm getting tired of waiting for you. Remember, the good old days weren't always good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems. Most of the first 20 years of rap was a lot better than this cheese.

  • I can't believe this video is 28 yrs old no! MAN! Time flys,YIKES!! I remember when this was on the charts, I have an old cassette recording off of the radio of this song, finally found the album 20 years later at a Goodwill!

  • The great Jay Ferguson. What a awesome writer/pianist and lead singer. Saw him twice with Spirit. A very very underrated performer. I think currently writing music for TV and movies.

  • He did the soundtrack for "Gleaming the Cube" lol...but seriously, he did.

  • You can DL from itunes

  • i cant find this song anywhere =(

  • Always loved this song!

  • The drummer is Harry Stinson, bass is Dave White

Robert Webb on guitar and Robert Alpert on keyboards. Thanks so much for putting this video

    on!!

  • Cool info-I love Stinsons drumming and Vocal work with Steve Earle..

  • Holy crap, is that Nigel Tufnel (Chris Guest)on bass? He's even chewing gum.

  • LMAO!!! He does look like Nigel!

  • AH, someone beat me to it...but the keyboard player looks a bit like Viv Savage, too......

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Would love to hear "Modern Girl" too if you have it.

  • "Modern Girl"video was lost to (jaws) tape machine. Did save audio before that happened. Do have "Thunder Island" video.

  • Too bad! If "Modern Girl" is lost to the ages,I'd sure love if someone could put up it's cousin, Jo Jo Gunne's "Couldn't Love You Better." ;-)

  • Holy shit - I remember actually seeing this on tv. He performed 3 other songs, 2 of them were from the Terms And Conditions album (I forget the 4th song - I don't think it was Thunder Island). Anyway, can you please post the other songs? I used to be a VERY big fan of his. And - is that Joe Walsh on drums? It sure looks like him. Or maybe it's Curly Smith....

  • He did perform Thunder Island, the other 2 from Terms & Conditions were This Is Your Life and Modern Girl.

  • I didn't know - well, it's been 28 years! I saw you posted This Is Your Life - thanks!

  • @jacwar55 did jay really say--you can squeeze the sails, you can lick the d***ks,geez

  • @lilj2345 He said lick the decks, not the other one lol
