  • I'm not a HUGE fan of Moffat, but i have to admit, Writing something that means sooo much more a few years down the line, is brilliant! These eps. were good when they aired, but go back now and watch them! My God they are amazing....

  • I hate how sad this is, It's awful how the Doctor doesnt even know who she is when she dies, and she has to die knowing that. :( I this episode though, probably one of my all time favorites. <3 River is my hero. I love her and rewatching this made me cry so hard. :(

  • The time lords battle against time. I do think that all the skies of all the worlds would turn dark if he for one moment accepts that. The inspiration of this scene never fails.

  • I love this part, but does anyone know the name of the song used in 1:30 I hear a bit of Vale Decem, but with more instruments, and I looked it up and I think it's The Greatest Story Never Told but if you listen to the full track, that part isn't there.

  • It's so incredible watching this the second time, knowing more about the Doctor and who River is. Moffat is a freakin' genius.

  • One of my favorite episodes. It gets my heart racing no matter how many times I watch it. Good Job Tennant & Kingston <3

  • one of the best scene's from dr who. the future dr speaking to the tenth doctor and him trying to workout the purpose of the sonic screwdriver. why would the doctor give her the sonic screwdriver, to save her. fuckin awesome moment of revelation with the right music. captures the emotion of the moment perfectly.

  • "Nobody knowed it like the Doctor"

Did I hear it wrong, or is that really what she said?

  • @dekusnake i thought that too - i put it down to slightly dodgy quality of the video sound but i'm not too sure (thank god someone else heard it - i thought i was going mad !!!)

  • i dont know if its just me but i think the 3 kids at the end look like young amy, rory and mels because theres only 1 boy and the girls totally look like amy and mels

  • so those children at the end ... Rory and Amy have virtual grandchildren ?

  • @rnj117 maybe....the date that the Doctor and River went on before he knew he was going to meet her for the first time?... but it still doesn't make a lot of sense. Moffat better explain that...

  • @melrastessa Those are the children who Donna was the mother of when she went into the library's storage and was married to some architect with a stutter or something like that. They are virtual copies, code, and every couple in the library who had children had a variation of these two kids. It's only natural that they would survive since they were purely code... and what with the matrix being stabilized. In essence they could be hers... and could just as well as belong to any of the others.

  • @ATyger Good point. Although there were three, most of the people only had the one boy and girl. But I see what you're saying. I suppose we can't think much of it until we actually see River go and what Moffat decides to do with that.

Wonder who River marries in the library? lol

  • @melrastessa It's probably Donna's 'children' and CAL.

  • @melrastessa yeah , i think they are like the children donna had when she was in the computer but if so do they count as amy and rory's grandchildren - i han't thought about the possibility of them being the doctor's but now you mention it ..... hmmmm.....

  • @rnj117 I mean with DW anything is a possibility. I have a feeling that is a subtle way for Moffatt to table River's character for possible future use. The storyline has just been so circular it's hard to see where it ends.

  • Seriously, Do you really think River is going to stay put? Death of River Song my ASS.

  • @henchmen999 exactly what I think!

  • At 1:30 - does anyone else hear a snippet of "Vale Decem" in the background? IT'S THE SONG THEY PLAYED WHEN THE 10TH DOCTOR REGENERATED OMG MY CREYS

  • Comment removed

  • I just watched the "First Night & Last Night" Mini episode. I just had to watch this after.

  • God that always makes me tear up! Here's how it has to go: when the doctor begins his last regeneration, he goes to the Library and does a brilliant thing to get River back and she becomes the Last Companion. Or he goes to the Library and downloads himself when he is ready to die and he and River finally get to be together.

  • @RoseForEverafter no the 11th isnt the last doctor but he is the one who gives her the screwdriver so sometime prior to her death and the

  • But it's not the 11th's screwdriver...on no...must we wait for 12? Or will something else happen?

  • @ChelseCreek84 Personally I think just at the end of one episode the 11th Doctor should just go to the library right after 10 has left and pick it up... Huge paradox :D

  • @ChelseCreek84 no the 11th gives her the screwdriver watch the minisode first day and last day

  • @joshuareynolds23 Oh that would explain it. I haven't seen the mini-episodes. Do you think you could link me to them?

  • Moffat is traitor to old Doctor Who. But he is realy good author.

  • @DesmondEzio

    how is moffat a traitor?

  • This scene brings tears to my eyes.

So powerful so...inspirational. Especially what River says. And that MUSIC alongside of it. This scene is just so...perfect...

  • Now that I watch what happens to River again, I'm convinced the Doctor was selfish to save her in this way. Yes, a part of her would live on, but she's River freakin' SONG. She'd hate being stuck in the Library forever!

I really hope the Doctor will find a way to make her live more adventures. I'll be heartbroken if he doesn't.

  • @CommanderEivlys He checked Donna and the others out successfully. I'm sure he'll go back for River eventually. And for the first time in their relationship they'll actually be on the same page. Of course, it may also be the last time in their relationship that that'll happen. XD

  • @CommanderEivlys I wouldn't be surprised if 11 visits her here every so often :)

  • @CommanderEivlys SHE WAS HAPPY. are you blind? look at her! with her archaeology team! taking care of those children! SHE WAS HAPPY!

  • @CommanderEivlys She would probably hate being stuck with a simple domestic life like that, but the Library is pretty cool. Archeologists, right? they could have some fun. And yeah, the doctor has to come back for her!

  • Everybody lives Rose. Just this once, everybody lives!

  • @JustGuess500 I read that in 9's voice, right form the start :D

  • first time i watched this i thought it was sweet she got to stay with her friends. now i just think river didnt even know those people that well. i bet she didnt even like them and avoids them in cyber heaven or whatever that place is

  • are the kids Rory and Amys then? or Rivers?

  • @ManicAwesome96 I would assume its her and the Doctors seeing as it's a world that you can manipulate to turn into whatever you want :)

  • One of the best DW episodes, EVER.

  • 3:51 Virtual grandchildren!

  • @SaIvatioNx3 I'm pretty sure it's just Tenth Doctor's theme. All the doctors have a theme, and I'm pretty sure this is his. Mind, I could be totally wrong, but I don't think so.

  • @MissRumphuis Thank you very much. :-)

  • Can anyone tell me what's the name of the song played in the backround?

    It's sounds so beautiful.

  • @SaIvatioNx3 The Doctor's Theme (Series 4)

  • am i the only one that loves the doctors face when he realizes he can open the tardis with a click of his finger his expression is like NO EFING WAY!

  • It's so sad to see River in such a calm, domestic life in the end, but I'm convinced that 11's going to be able to actually save her so they can go off and have more adventures. Because he has to, right? Moffat can't really be that evil to just leave her there, can he????

  • @989mid Umm...Moffat is evil enough to scare us half to DEATH in the episodes he writes. XD

  • Watching this actually helped me accept 11... Idk but his comment just helped xD

  • You need to change it to "The death of melody pond"

  • @FrozenMeerkat spoilers!

  • Some people think Moffat is a crap author.

    I think he's a genius.

  • @aidansparkes We have a name for those people—we call them "idiots."

  • @aidansparkes You would be mistaken. All the monsters putting the Dr in a box as a cliffhanger in the finale & then him getting back out again using his wand is not just severely unimpressive, but it's the epitome of LAME. Simple stories for simple minds I suppose.

  • @LegoDaleks I was really on about the River/Doctor timeline. I find it really fascinating.

I just realized how much the Doctor uses his Sonic Screwdriver, and bloody hell! Without it, he would be dead by now.

  • @aidansparkes He is one of the greatest writers i think Doctor Who has ever had

  • @aidansparkes youre talking about Stephen Moffat right? He's wonderful! I love his eps of Doctor Who and I love Sherlock. I dont know how anyone could think he's crap... :)

  • Wait...what's the Doctor going to tell Amy and Rory?

  • Watching this again after seeing the new series makes me ridiculously depressed....

  • "I am very good" lol

  • what was the song that was playing?

  • 2.19 "that man, that "impossible" man"......

  • The sonic screwdriver river has is the modified version of the 10th's

  • Brb sobbing.

  • 0:37 - - The Sonic Screwdriver lit up like a light bulb the same time David got the genius idea Matt made for him!

  • Not gonna lie...this fucking made me cry. Like. rewatching this after all of seasons five and six....this makes me so very sad.

  • This would be a great monologue. I used to think River was annoying before I understood who she was, but now that I know I actually really love her character.

  • 2:21 That impossible man

"You and me, time and space"

The adventures of an impossible man (time) and an impossible astronaut (space)

  • the sonic river has is different then the 11th doctors

  • You know, it seems like they would be able to save river. I mean they saved Donna

  • @grandchildofchaos the thing is river was dying when she was put in the system. donna and the rest were still alive when they were put in the system. maybe in the future they can have the technology to do so but untill the future we can never be sure

  • Why does this scene always make me cry? Even more so now that we know River's full story.

  • "One last run!" Gets me every time :')

  • That was just brilliant. What a great episode

  • i wonder if when the doctor is done with his last life and truely goes to die. will he go back to the libary and place himself into the data core to be with river fover.

  • @roseshi yes!!! that would be genius writing on moffat's part. Although a few people will want to kill Moffat for that. You know what will be awesome, if the episode featuring the Doctor's final battle is written by both Davies and Moffat.

  • *River dies*

WOO HOO NEVER HAVE TO SEE HER AGAIN!

    *Series 5 & 6*

    Seriously... Kill me.

I really hated River from the word go.

  • @FunnyLittleNightmare THANK YOU!!!! I also hate River.

  • @FunnyLittleNightmare I guess some people are annoyed that they'll never be the Doctor's wife? lol

  • @alexjluthor Maybe when Tennant was the Doctor lol but not with Smith... ugh River can keep him lol

  • @FunnyLittleNightmare lol, I still can't decide who's my favorite among those two. I think I'm leaning toward 11...

  • @alexjluthor I love both as actors but Tennant wins simply because his doctor has a more attractive and warm personality (and exterior lol) whereas Smith's Doctor acts more alien and while that is brilliant, I'd rather the former.

  • @FunnyLittleNightmare I hated River at first but I heard her speak THESE lines in this scene and...wow....it blew me away at how true she was...

  • i really wish i could have that moment ' oh, I'm very good!'

  • The first part of this 2 part episode was the first Dr Who episode I'd ever watched. I was kinda upset that it was a 2 parter since it looked really interesting with the shadow mosters and stuff and I never got to see the 2nd part on tv. Now going through and watching all of the episodes online, I'm glad to have made it back and seen the conclusion of this episode. It was really heartbreaking to see River Song just pop in and die, and I really hope I can see the rest of her life.

  • Not sure if anybody else notice this, but in Torchwood Miracle Day, Miracle Day was the day that no one died, and the Miracle is referred to throughout the series as 'The Blessing". Now think about this video. "Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Some days are special. Some days are so, so BLESSED." Do you see it?

  • one of the best movie scene from all the time....as someone said...it's sending chills down on spine when you watch it...

  • Jeez, this makes me tear up so much. Especially when the Doctor is standing there so sad...

  • "Oh, Ohh, Ohhhhhh" sends chills down my spine everytime :') David<3

  • Wait, if the Doctor brought Donna back, could he not bring River back?

  • @grandchildofchaos Donna never actually died but River did. I think that's the difference. There's probably some timey wimey reason why River remains inside the library while Donna can go free.

  • @clarinetpride It's because Donna was taken in, body and all, and all that remained of River were bones and a memory bite. If River tried to leave, she probably would die because she doesn't have a body to leave in, though I don't see why the doctor can't find, or find someone to make, a new body for her.

and OMG was that a ginger in the third bed? PLEASE TELL ME THEY WERE MADE TO LOOK LIKE RORY, AMY AND THE DOCTOR!!! D: *tries to look closer*

  • @alexjluthor The 2 children in the beds were the ones Donna had when she was trapped in computer core, which is why the little girl had red hair.

  • @grandchildofchaos The same reason why Abigail (the lil girl) cannot escape. She downloaded THAT ENTIRE WORLD into her brain so she'll always be there now.

  • one day when its all done ill have to watch the river episodes in descending order to see things from her point of view

  • @fieldninjai Who say's it's ever gonna be done? =D

  • @gleehmee /watch?v=LcuDf25OuQo boom. done

  • @fieldninjai I meant the story itselt. the anachronistic nature of river's appearences may mean it never has to end. (obviously, the actress will probably die or look too old for the part eventually, but this is doctor who we're talkign about.)

  • wait a min it she was saved into the data cored like everyone else in the library can't she be brought back to life??

  • Just sayin'....If other BIG events (like the battle of canary what-cha-ma-call-it and cyber-king over old england, as well as ALL of the world's public knowledge of aliens were ALL erased by the cracks in time, isn't it a logical guess that this may have been erased aswell?

  • r u sure river is acculy dead!

  • And so River Song, the daughter of Amy Pond and Rory Williams, died saving the man she loved the most, rewarded with a place in the virtual Heaven the Doctor helped to restore. RIP, Melody Pond

  • after the 6th series I watched this episode and cried so much

    River is just amazing ♥

  • Aren't I a clever girl?

  • Watch this episode the first time around, its a cool episode about shadow monsters with this confusing bit about some river lady... come back to watch it later and its a freaking sobfest.

  • @LikeSoTotallyRandom Doctor "killed" River, but didn't actually kill her! River "killed" the Doctor, but didn't actually kill him. And the circle is complete. Only in Doctor Who these things can happen. One has to love this show...

  • @Phaedrusgr Even more, the Doctor held River as a newborn. However, I don't suppose that particular bit will become mutual, with the time lock and all.

  • @Arancaytar Don't be so sure. You never know with moffat at the helm.

  • @LikeSoTotallyRandom I know :(

  • "You and me...one last run!" Oh jeez...so much more meaning after series 6!

  • I agree

  • Best lines ever written : )

  • Comment removed

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS EPISODE WHEN IT WAS ON!! I saw part 1 I have NO IDEA why I havent seen part 2

  • After seeing River's life, I absolutely love her character. I think I'd be heartbroken if she had actually died here.

  • LONG LIVE RIVER SONG!!!!!!! The greatest charecter ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dear gods, this episode is depressing now. I was quite honestly very mildly affected the first time I watched this episode but now after watching the entire series I can honestly say that this is one of the saddest episodes in there. And in the first half when she figures out that it's before he knows her it's completely heartbreaking.

    Now I'm crying. Damn it.

  • @Gryffinclan its amazing once you know the full story how truly depressing and heart-breaking rivers end is. it always gets me when she realizes shes finally come to the moment when the man she loves doesn't know or recognize her at all. The way shes talking to him as shes about to sacrifice herself to save the library is so sad and even though the doctor doesn't know her...its so sad how he just look so lonely staring at the chair!

  • The only water in the Forest of the Dead is the River. Silence will fall in the Library.

MOFFAT YOU BRILLIANT MAN I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW

  • If you watch this episode when it is first released, it is not that sad. But now, if you watch all the episodes IN THE ORDER OF RIVER'S TIMELINE, then you realize how sad this is.

  • @kaizoisevil it also brings out the genius of her character since we meet her and don't really know who she is and then now years later we finally are starting to figure River Song out...its pure brilliance P:

  • MOFFAAAAT! *shakes fist* ... I mean BARROW-

  • Only Moffat could write episode which are simultaniously pilots for his era of Doctor Who and also the finale as well. and i love how he bigs MAtt Smith up BEFORE hes even cast him, brilliant. The Doctor is the most magnificent man of all time, he gave her immortality, hell he gave them all immortality

  • Love her smile at the end - she's so beautiful.

  • This bit makes me cry

  • i think this is one of my favorite moments in the seies it just is so amazing

  • I absolutely adored these sort of moments in Doctor Who but we never seem to get the with Matt Smith anymore. Although I still like Matt Smith Doctor who's just not the same without David :(

  • @balloooonatic to be fiar tho was the show the same without Hartnell, or Baker, or Eccelston. the show does have to change and evolve. I imagine ppl felt the exact same way about Davison when baker left, or even Baker when Perttwee left. in fact newspapers show ppl asking him to change back. each doctor is gloriously different. i want a few more moents like that too, but if any 2 doctor are too alike, why bother changing them at all?

  • @227060 i agree and i love how every Doctor is individual and the actors re-create the character's personality but we still never seem to get the same type of heart-wrenching, emotional scenes like when Rose and the tenth Doctor were separated and in their farewell it was really emotional. there seems to be not as much depth to the characters personalities as there was back then.

  • @balloooonatic I see it like this. its a different style. Smith brought a lot of pathos to the role in Closing time and Amy and Rory's relationshiip is touching. there does seem to be less emotion, mind you Smith is a less emotional and human Doctor, which isn't a bad thing necesarrily. i loved Tennant but instead of doing something too similar they did a bit fo a 180, not unlike when Eccelston left. having said that none of the charcters feel as real as say Rose or Donna, i still like em tho

  • I love Alex Kngston in this bit she reads it so well :')

  • Maybe later in the series the doctor will revisit the library and make a flesh river :P

  • Epic scene, but I never really liked River much.

  • This ending for River actually really makes me sad. A peacefull soccermom life would kill the River Song we've gotten to know in season 5 and 6. I'm sure she would hate a life like that. She's part time-lord for gods-sake, she's meant to run.

  • @Eleonoor I wonder if running is truly innate to Time Lords. We've seen glimpses that the Doctor would love to have a family and a home (Family of Blood). I think Time Lords like to run, but also want a place to run to.

  • @allaplomb i think that running isn't innate to timelords, just innate to the doctor. he tried the quiet life on galifrey and then, for reasons yet to be explained, he ran away taking only the TARDIS and his granddaughter with him.

  • @Denseus1 im not even sure Suan was with him to begin with. I like to think initially he ran off on his own and then took Susan and maybe his own children along. on top of that recall Amy's question in S06e07 about his cot "who else slept in here?". I think part of why he ran away might have been the fear of corruption that the Time Lords have a problem with. but i doubt that was the main reason (scared of being a husband dad maybe?)

  • @227060 the first episode of doctor who was called unearthly child and featured susan but i understand what you are saying. you are saying that the first episode doesn't have to be when the doctor first ran away. btw i cannot remember which episode or which doctor it featured but there was an episode in the early series in which the doctor faced his death and the previous doctors were there and there were other figures you couldn't see which was meant to imply that W.Hartnell wasn't the first.

  • @Denseus1 You might be thinking of the Brain of Morbius. it was implied they might be past regenerations,w hich is a neat idea, but it wasn't so explicit that it was for definite that Hartnell wasn't the original. some ppl say it could've been Morbius' old regenrations. theres been quite a bit of material wiithin the show itself to suggest that Hartnell was in fact the original, the 1 that comes to mind immediatly is the Lodger when MAtt Smith's doctor says he is the 'eleventh'

  • @227060 have you read the books that have been released over the years? i don't consider them canon but they are still interesting

  • @Denseus1 iv all on e-books. i suspect i'll read them during a lull in the series. they are indeed interesating but yeah canonicity is debatable. i mean from waht i've read about Lungbarrow its a great story but i personally don't really like what it did witht he doctor and time lords. its fromt hat school of thought that says the Doctor must be a-sexual thus susan wasn't his granddaughter. + it makes the doctor out to be the Other, a special time lord. he was already plenty special

  • @227060 yeah i agree. as far as i am concerned its a crime on level with making the doctor half human in the most recent film during the ninties. which was a pity as the 8th doctor was pretty good on the radio plays.

  • @Denseus1 he was wasn't he. were it not for the Master's 1 line confirming him to be half human we could just put it down topost regeneration trauma. I mean personally i think it reveals a wee bit oo much about his past. i mean if the Doctor loses the mystery thats like a large chunk of the show gone. Wolverine and the Joker can survive the lack of mystery they've lost but, i mean its literally the name of the show, Dr Who? hints, thats the key, hint at the past never go the full monty

  • @227060 luckily they just ignore what that film set up in the new series. remember when the bizzaro 10th doctor found out he was part human, he was nearly traumatised. I know it adds to the mystery of the show but i really wish we knew for certain exactly how the 8th doctor died. we are pretty sure he died during the time-war and in the opening episode of the new series the 9th doctor showed some surprise and interest in his appearance as if he had never seen it before.

  • @Denseus1 the meta crisis 10th doctor being part human was fine, he wasn't the real doctor. i imagine he died blowing up gallifray and the daleks.

  • @227060 same, mostly because of the 10th doctors comment about how the 9th was "born in battle"

  • @Denseus1 theres actually a website which has someone witness the 9th doctor in the junkyard from an unearhtly child crying that he is the only 1 left in mcgann's costume

  • @227060 is the witness credible? this is the internet we are talking about. there is one website in which a guy swears he travelled to an alternate world in which the Beatles never broke up and brought back a mix tape to prove it.

  • @Denseus1 no no no. Its 1 of those websites which exists in the real show which the BBC actually made a real website to so they've written the whole thing as if ppl from the Dr Who universe have gone on the internet and written in to Mickey Smith

  • @227060 oh one of those. yeah thats kinda cool. will have to check it out

  • @Denseus1 me too theres so much material

  • @227060 never a truer word spoken

  • @Denseus1 indeed

  • @227060 indeed indeed

  • @Denseus1 indeed x3

  • @227060 indeed∞

  • If only that was a teslecta River dying :'(

Full River/Doctor shipper here...Im crying soooo badly

  • Everybody knows everybody dies even the Doctor and he knows when he dies he will be with River. I always imagine as he dies he goes to the Library and does exactly what he did to River so he can be with her forever

  • # everybody knows that everybody dies / but nobody knows it like him / i think all the lights would drain out of the sky / if he ever gave up trying #

  • I cried a river at the end of Forest of the Dead.

  • Interesting that the three children are comprised of two girls and one boy - a la Amy/Rory/Mels. If I remember correctly Donna's daughter had red hair and her son brown? Cal or whatever looks nothing like Mels (from when she grew up with them) but the idea is still there. Even if it wasn't intentional I think its still quite cool.

  • It's strange to see this episode, where River knows the Doctor but the Doctor doesn't know river, and then to see Let's Kill Hitler where the Doctor knows River but River is meeting the Doctor for the first time. It's a bit hard for me to wrap my mind around it. :)

  • When I watched this episode for the first time, I thought she didn't really die because she rejoined the doctor in future episodes. I thought she had escaped somehow.

Now that I watched season 6, I cried. Long live river song.

  • i have a fealing she will make a return from that world

the doctor got every one out of there body and everything

how come he cant do it again

    i mean really

    thats the doctors wife.

  • @darter23 He got everyone out that didn't actually die in reality. All those people he pulled out were just downloaded into the core to save them, body and all (however that works). River and her crew died; they don't have the option of returning. That's how I interpreted it, anyhow. :)

  • @bagbunny eh they'll think of something :l

  • The docter a dad
