In WW2, the Allies freed France. France was completly under german control. The Resistance and the french Colonies were not able to win against Germany. But Germany would have lost WW2 anyway. Russia and Britain would have won without the troops of the USA. They only needed the USA for trading.

You must wait for the second half of the 19th century to see some "local" troops, for ex. the "Tirailleurs Sénégalais".

An other important thing to say is that the song you put here isn't at all the French Colonial Anthem, but a traditionnal song written by the french writer Pierre Mac-Orlan, and we use to sing this at the end of regiment feasts, with another one called "Opium" (always these 2 ones). Our anthem is "l'Hymne de L'Infanterie de Marine". Anyway, it's alaways pleasant to see people getting interested in what we do^^ ! See u, enjoy !

Well... A little bit of history... The "Coloniale", today known as the "Colo", the "Troupes de Marine", the "TDM", the "Marsouins" (infantery) or the "Bigorres" (artillery), were, at the beginning, not recruited in the colonies, but in order to serve in the colonies. You must wait for the second half of the 19th century to see some "local" troops, for ex. the "Tirailleurs Sénégalais".

The French won militarily in the Franco-Thai war, but the Vichy French were cheated of their victory because of Japanese negotiations that forced French to cede territory.
Every nation at it's time lost to third world countries.

And the only thing you are capable of is telling lies and fibs about an army. the French has always been powerful. they nearly single handedly took down the German army during WW 2, since they covered 3/4 of the western front. Get your history straight for once. If you are still under the influence of WW 2, then you are a sad fool. History doesnt begin from WW II, it goes back all the way back in the time of the Franks.

@expertstrategy the Franks were Germans, not French. Does "Frankfurt-am-Main" mean anything to you? Frankish is also the mother of many western German dialects, my own included. Charlemagne, by the way, had his throne in Aachen, Germany -- not in France. However, I do agree with you that there are so many utterly asinine comments being posted here that do not show even a rudimentary knowledge of French history aside from that which is presented in redneck comedy programmes.

France is the cradle of Celtic people, we have have also latin, German and even Norsk (scandinavia) roots. France is situate in the center of the Western Europe so it's normal, we have many influences.

@burtoncaly La France n'est absolument pas le berceau des Celtes. Les Celtes sont issus de Germanie, chassés par d'autres Germains (ne me demande pas lesquels, il y a longtemps que j'ai oublié^^). Si tu veux te renseigner là-dessus, Jean Markale a écrit des choses très intéressantes sur l'épopée Celte. Je me souviens du dernier volume, "Les Conquérants De L'Ile Verte", qui parle de leur arrivée, finalement, en Irlande.Une autre fois, on reparlera du traité de Verdun ;). @+.

But there were many, many foriegn regiments that fought for the Germans in WW II against the allies, the list is huge. There were collaberators everywhere in Europe, it's stupid to argue to say that France collaberated, so what, many conquered nations fought for Hitler. Even Hitler's invasion force in Russia was composed of many foreigners. Fact.

@MrSanjavierino, The French soldiers who deserted their posts in WW I, did not run away because they are afraid, they did it because they had enough with the war. In fact, in WW II, Stalin ordered that if any of the Russian soldiers abandon from the army, or even take a step back (retreat), they will be shot for charges like, cowardice, being a traitor, etc.

If you had a little bit of culture you'd know that French military had a huge influence over the world (tactics, uniforms, vocabulary...). Besides, France saved the Western allies from an early defeat in the first World War at the first battle of the Marne. It is mostly a French victory, just as WW II is more of a Russian victory, since the Nazis lost much of their army in Russia.
