I love Weimar German Kabarett music, love the fun aspect, freedom of the lyrics, music, well freedom while it lasted. This era is very important culturally as it produced some of the most original interesting tunes German Kabarett 1920s to 1930s
I don't think that Max Hansen was calling himself an jewish artist. It reflects the way we look today. He was an great artist, thats the point. Would be nice If we could stop to brand everything for our needs.
It's sad when biggots use nice sites like this to vent their ignorance.
The Israeli's didn't get their land back through terrorism.
Somebody found the Dead Sea scrolls which showed the land as originally being theirs.
A vote was taken in the U.N. after tons of hearings and so on,...
But, the biggots don't want to hear this.
They probably don't even know the vote in the Israeli's favor sparked a war of independance, started by the Arab nations and won by the Israeli's in 1948.
But in any case that has nothing to do with music of the 1930s, guess the upper Silesian musicians didn't care much about religion than being not Polish. In particular when they sung music for homosexuals their religion was no point. Furthermore being a jew and a supporter of zionist nation building is not the same. After all Askhenazi means German.
If you like the Golden entertainment of the 1920s, you might like Brendan McNally's dark comic novel "Germania" (Simon & Schuster, 2009), about the Flying Magical Loerber Brothers, four somewhat magical, Jewish vaudeville entertainers and onetime child stars who were the toast of Berlin before WWII and who reunite during the surreal, three-week "Flensburg Reich" of Admiral Doenitz, Hitler's very unlucky successor.
why the Jews? it seems it was a blind and careless policy the fascist party enacted. such intense discrimination makes no sense. if certain Germans were complaining of Jews in high office,=universtiy, business, then why didnt that element of Germans just study more? then Herr Schoeder could have achieved what Herr Bernstein achieved! all with education and perseverance!
@acerb45666555 Excellent commentary: and if the Palestinians in the Gaza concentration camp studied a bit harder they could be as successful as the Israelis and get their country back, all with education and perseverance! No matter that the Israelis got their country not through education, but through terrorism against the previous occupants, the British!
I don't have umlauts or 'ess-tsetts' either...I guess I wasn't clear. Everybody's got the chorus..so did I--and the tenor of the rest of it (dass ich so schoen bin)..However, there are 2 stanzas that have some details I'm not quite getting : the one "aus der Wiegele..." and the contretemps between the Lehmans... I felt embarrassed about my declining German, until I ran it by a lady who grew up in Basel foxtrotting to this, and she wasn't sure either. Anybody, on those two stanzas? Thanks to all.
In 1923, Max Hansen and Betty Fischer appeared with Richard Tauber in the premiere of Oscar Straus's 'Last Waltz'.
It was one of 4 new operettas Tauber created at the Theatre an der Wien that year: the others were Bacchus-Nacht, Die Perlen von Cleopatra and Eine Nacht in Venedig.
Pascual Godes take in Barcelona the responsability of Jazz recordings by POLYDOR in 1928..J.Duran Alemany in the same year begin recording for PARLOPHONE..they Know both Berlin musicians like Ben Berlin,Spoliansky ,Godwin,Nelson,Weintraub etc so the influence of jazz records in Barcelona were german-jewish strongly till 34..Planas,Matas,Demon etc came with strong American experiences..more eclectic in Spain
I am not History buff, but after all the Hell the Nazis put the world through for about l5 years or more..I don't think this is apt. All the people connected to this era are dead.
Paul GODWIN may have died in oblivion and Max Josef HANSEN may not have regained his popularity before he died but you certainly have brought them back to life tonight with this cheery lively cabaret presentation.
max hansen was danish - and possybly jewish.

Was kann der Sigismund dafur (by Robert Gilbert)
Apologies for the lack of umlauts.

Love the song, and this is another brilliant version. The singer is practically disintegrating over Sigi's overwhelming beauty.

I really love Max Hansen, and I really love Benatzky. Hansen and Benatzky in one tune, what could be better.
But my favorite at the moment is the Tango "Mein schönes Fräulein gute Nacht" from
"Axel vor der Himmeltür".
