@roockage actually if you think about the story, this scene in particular is all about fighting and super powers. The Shamisen player Nitaboh is in fact battling against a rival player who is threathening to discredit his Shamisen style. Only one performer will emerge triumphant. So there-you see this is in fact a FIGHT to a death(artistic death of course). and the Shamisen itself is a mysterious instrument which requires super powers to produce even one clear note. so there you have it!

This film was one of the best I've ever seen when it comes to the "anime"-styled films. I was really surprised that this wasn't the usual depiction of Japan's 19th century which usually includes Samurais, the Meiji restoration, the end of the shogunate and the influx of western influence - at first one might think that this is a simple tale about a boy and his wish yet one might soon realise the importance of this boy's dream - playing the shamisen. A truly touching film I can only recommend. :)

this is a independent film in japan. it is akio nishizawa that directed this movie and wrote its script. he did a movie work for the first time. look at 'nitaboh official site'
